SSC - CGL 2015 : How to prepare for SSC - CGL Interview
Dear Readers,
First of all, we congratulate all the candidates who have successfully cleared the SSC - CGL 2015 Mains exam. The Staff Selection Commission will soon start issuing call letters to the shortlisted candidates for the third and final tier of the exam, which includes a Personal Interview (Personality Test). We are posting a series of articles on 'Preparation Strategy for SSC - CGL 2015 Interviews', discussing all the core areas that need to be focussed on while preparation and the actual interview. This is Part 1 of this series.
While the common written examination only tests your aptitude skills, the third phase has different set of questions for every candidate, targeting his/her core personality. It tests your knowledge, conceptual depth, analytical prowess and attitude. Among all the stages of the exam, Tier-3 is the toughest.
Are you worried of not being successful in your interview? Don't be. Though it seems a tall order, in reality it is quite easy if you are well-prepared. You need to first understand the mindset of interviewers. i.e. What exactly are they looking for? Have a balanced approach on issues while answering questions, communicate coherently and maintain your true persona. So, before formulating an interview strategy, let us thoroughly understand the pattern of Tier-3.
Pattern of Tier-3:
The Personality Test is worth 100 marks. The Commission, at its discretion, may fix different minimum qualifying marks in PI for General and Reserved category candidates.
After clearing the PI with high merit, you will be shortlisted for various posts as prescribed in the notification. Candidates receive the posts based on their post preference & the final score out of total 700 marks. (Tier I + II + III = 200 + 400 + 100 = 700)
Panel of Interviewers:
i) Your interview will be conducted by a panel comprising 3-4 SSC officials.
ii) The panel will consist of a main interviewer seated in the middle, who will ask questions based on your personality and aspirations.
iii) Another member will analyse your profile and ask questions based on facts mentioned in the same.
iv) The board members also judge your general knowledge and the manner in which you respond to questions.
Nature & scope of the PI:
To understand the nature and scope of the interview, we first need to know why an interview is a prerequisite in the selection process for positions in the SSC. The major attributes necessary for candidates competing for various administrative posts are aptitude, management and social skills.
As the written examination tests your core aptitude, the interview is conducted to test your interpersonal skills and attitude.
i) Interviewers test your capability to grasp ideas/thoughts as well as articulately communicate your own viewpoints.
ii) They also assess how you respond to pressure and your ability to tackle challenges.
iii) Interviews also test whether a candidate has an optimistic attitude and a solution-centric approach when confronted with tough situations.
Interview does not have a set model or preparation strategy because its scope changes based on each candidate's profile. The set of questions may be different for a fresher and an experienced person. Questions can be based on his/her academic background, work experience, recent developments in their professional fields, a candidate's decision of changing the previous field of job, etc.
Now that we have discussed the nature of interviews, let us sum up the tools we have to build a good preparation strategy.
Interview Tools:
1) Personality: An honest personality and healthy confidence while presenting it in front of the panel is your first weapon. Your manner of presenting your strengths and knowledge will surely pay off.
2) Academic Background: Your academic background gives an insight into your career choice. A graduate usually spends around 3-4 years to study and excel in a particular subject. It is thus natural to expect him/her to know about the field. Therefore, be prepared for questions on current developments in your field. If you have any interesting projects and summer internships in your profile, it will have a healthy impact on the interviewer.
3) Job Experience: A candidate with job experience should be ready to answer questions based on his job profile and work experience. Notable work/assignments that you took up in your previous job will be an added plus.
4) Aptitude: Though you are tested for aptitude in the previous phases of this exam, you can expect more questions based on current affairs. Your knowledge of relevant topics and opinions about current and controversial issues will be also tested.
5) Eloquence : Your ability to use proper language and convey his/her opinions in an articulate manner is very important.
6) Leadership qualities : The posts offered by SSC require administrative skills and leadership qualities to discharge one's duties efficiently. The panel will look for such qualities in the candidate and judge him/her accordingly.
In this article, we discussed the pattern, nature and scope of an interview and the requisite traits. In our next article in the series, we will discuss possible questions across categories that may be asked and the strategy to tackle such questions.
SSC - CGL 2015 : How to prepare for SSC - CGL Interview - Part 2
In the previous article, we discussed the pattern, nature and scope of an interview and the requisite traits. In this article, we will discuss possible questions across categories that may be asked and the strategy to tackle such questions.
Being well-prepared is key to smoothly sail through this phase. So, let us go through the major areas in detail.
Introduction:
Your profile gives a basic outline but your introduction is your first impression.
- Posts in the SSC offers include both desk jobs as well as field jobs. These posts, especially those with field work, require candidates to be swift in administration and to have good leadership skills.
- A few posts require public relation skills i.e. these test a candidate's interpersonal skill.
. So, before preparing your introduction try to answer the following questions.
a) How do you see yourself as a person?
b) What are your hobbies and interests?
c) What are your strengths and weaknesses?
d) What is your perspective about the life you have lived and your future aspirations?
e) How do you usually tackle challenging situations? Any example?
. After listing out answers for these questions, make a proper flow chart and analyse it once thoroughly. After this, ask yourself if this person seems interesting to you?
. If not, then take time and dig out some more information about yourself. Put this information in such a way that the interviewer wishes to know more about you.
. The introduction should only include salient details about yourself. Keep it simple and brief, else you risk making it boring. After all it is a two-way conversation and you are not there to give a speech. Use your time wisely as interviewers are not interested in irrelevant details.
. Be confident while introducing yourself in front of the panel. For this, you need to be thoroughly prepared and trust your abilities.
. Many times creating a strong first impression alone compels the interviewer to select you for the job. So a good introduction is half the work done.
Personal Questions:
This could be the set of obvious questions after your introduction is complete. Interviewer might take a cue from the facts you presented and ask more questions related to yourself and your personal life. S/he may also wish to cross-check facts you stated earlier.
So, let's now see what to expect in such type of questions.
. Be prepared for questions pertaining to your hobbies, interests, activities etc. For example: if you state reading as your favourite hobby, then some of the immediate questions may be:
Who is your favourite author?
What do you like about his writing?
What is your favorite genre?
Why do you read books of this particular genre?
. The interviewer might ask questions related to something you are passionate about and your endeavours in the same. This is when you can share some of your interesting experiences.
. You may also be asked about your family background and hometown.
. Note that it is very beneficial to make a flowchart of questions based on your personal life before going for the interview. This enables you to review your answers and further identify possible questions.
. Carry certificates you have been awarded for excelling in hobbies or your field of choice so as to substantiate your claims. For example: if you state painting as your hobby, carry a few sketches/paintings along with certificates you have received.
. Do not worry if you do not have such certificates or proofs. Your knowledge of the field will be sufficient enough.
. Make a flow chart of your strengths and weaknesses. Your strengths are what differentiate you from other competitors. However, be realistic while stating them and keep them relevant to the job. For example: your athletic stamina is not relevant to succeed in the desk jobs but it is surely required in field jobs. Whereas in desk jobs, your endurance matters a lot.
. State your weaknesses only if you are asked to do so. Mention minor weaknesses that can be easily overcome.
. Have a few examples to support your claims regarding such questions as they are usually asked to test your rational thinking and self-awareness.
Academics:
Academic qualifications are highly focussed on in the interview as they are crucial to the position you are being hired for. Questions on academics test your knowledge about the course you have pursued and your career choice.
. In this category, questions might differ for beginners and candidates with prior work experience.
.Create a strategy by reexamining important aspects of your educational and vocational decisions to convey only relevant points.
. Go through textbooks and revise definitions, formulae & concepts. In addition, keep track of recent developments related to the subject of your graduation as it proves that you have a genuine interest in the field.
. You can also present your major academic projects and assignments, internship certificates, etc. to the panel.
Job Experience:
. Be prepared for questions related to your job profile, skill set, and responsibilities in your previous company. Be sure to bring out a clear picture of the importance of your work in your previous job.
. Interviewers judge your ability to tackle challenges and complete the tasks given based on your performance in the previous job.
. Refrain from giving clichéd answers because it may reflect badly on your sincerity and dedication regarding your future position.
. Avoid presenting your previous role, the company and co-workers in a negative light. Maintain a positive attitude about your overall past journey as a professional.
. You can carry project work/assignments, awards & certificates that you have received in your previous job in order to corroborate your claims regarding your job profile and achievements.
. Keep track of recent developments with respect to your previous field of job. You should be ready to discuss the positive/negative impact of these developments.
In this article, we discussed different questions that may be asked across categories and strategies to tackle such questions. In the next article of this series, we will discuss more such areas & general tips for interviewees.
i am not able to insert pie charts or bar graph in excel sheet how to insert it anybody pplz help
In the previous article, we discussed different questions that may be asked across categories and the strategy to tackle such questions. In this article, we will discuss more such areas you might face questions from.
General Knowledge Questions:
. A candidate is expected to be aware of important national/international developments. This includes knowledge about current events and static subjects like history, political science, geography, economics & science, etc.
. It is essential to read newspapers daily, with a focus on editorials as they help you to give articulate answers.
.Interviewer may also be interested in your opinions on major national/international policies. Balanced and logical viewpoints will reflect a mature understanding and may work in your favour.
SSC gives a lot of impetus to this section during the interviews. Candidate should expect at least 4-5 questions from this area.
Situation and Behaviour-based Questions:
. As discussed in Capsule 1 of this series, the positions offered by SSC would include handling people and their grievances. This requires a candidate to possess managerial and decision making skills.
. Situation-based questions test your presence of mind and assess how quickly you handle challenging situations. Some questions also put your administrative skills on trial.
. Candidates are expected to have a positive outlook and solution-centric mindset. While dealing with virtual situations, you should think rationally and inclusively.
. Firstly, you should be balanced while assessing the given situation.
. Secondly, while answering, identify your strong attributes (which you might have mentioned before in your introduction). Then you can describe the actions you will take to tackle the situation. You should also describe the consequences of your actions as it will help to paint a clear picture.
Candidates should be ready for such question during the interviews as SSC usually asks 2-3 questions based on such virtual situations to test the administrative skills of candidates.
General tips for interviewers :
Appearance & Attire:
a) Your appearance and dressing sense are crucial to create a good first impression. So, do not make the mistake of dressing casually. Appropriate attire also conveys your sincerity towards the job.
b) Wear a formal and well-fitting attire. Steer clear of itchy or irritating fabrics as that will divert your attention.
Entering the interview room:
a) If the door is closed, knock twice and wait for a panel member to call you inside. Several knocks will be too noisy and rude.
b) Have a smiling and confident face while facing the interviewers and greeting them. You should seem calm and composed, not nervous and shaky.
c) Seek permission to sit; you should wait for the interviewers to sit down before you do.
Intelligent enthusiasm:
a) Interviews are always stressful affairs for many people. Due to stress, a candidate is likely to get nervous, which will negatively impact his profile.
b) Thus, your enthusiasm should convey that you are ready and excited to take up the job and discharge your duties. Do not be over-enthusiastic as you may come off as being immature.
Positive body language:
a) Not just your word, your body language also holds great value during an interview.
b) While standing and sitting, keep your posture straight and hold your head high.
c) Make good use of your hands while speaking in coordination with proper facial expressions.
d) Do not cross your arms, look at the floor or tap your foot. Positive body language is important as reflects your focus and attention.
Brevity:
a) Your answers should be brief and to the point, else you may end up confusing the interview/s.
b) Being to the point also reflects good understanding of the question. A talkative candidate is usually considered boring.
Honesty:
a) Being honest during the interview is always the best policy. Do not exaggerate your accomplishments or claim to have done tasks that, in reality, you have not. You honesty will always be respected.
b) If you do not know the answer to a question, admit it. Do not lie.
c) If the interviewers suspect any lies from the candidate, they start to cross-examine. And they succeed. So, that will only leave you embarrassed.
Sense of humour:
a) Exhibiting your sense of humour during the interview helps to show that you are more than just a dedicated worker.
b) However, use your humour only if it is a natural flair. Do not try to overdo it by cracking jokes.
Decorum:
a) Maintaining decency during the interview, be it as regards your body language or your conversation, is important. Your etiquette displays your upbringing. Be polite while answering. Cutting off the interviewer with hasty replies is a strict no-no. Let them complete their question/statements before you start answering.
b) Being confident is good, but over-confidence will only convey arrogance.
Avoid slangs:
a) Interviewees should remember to steer clear of slangs, profanities and any expletives as it is a testimony to immaturity and lack of professionalism.
b) Also, stick to one language while answering, whether it is Hindi or English.
Be attentive and ask questions:
a) Be very attentive during the interview as it is a mark of your sincerity.
b) If you are not able to grasp the question/statement in the first time, you can ask the interviewer to repeat his/her question/statement.
c) Clarifying your doubts immediately is best rather than misinterpreting the question and giving a wrong answer.
Eye contact:
a) Making the right amount of eye contact exhibits your self-confidence. It also shows that you are focused and attentive.
b) Avoid looking at your own shoes or at the table as it conveys fear, anxiety and lack of confidence.
c) Balance it in a way that you do not end up staring at one interviewer.
d) Remember, you will be interviewed by a panel of 5-6 different people. Make sure you interact with every person by making eye contact with each of them.
Be Yourself:
a) Try to be yourself. Never pretend to be someone you are not. To impress interviewers, candidates take up a fake accent, which they cannot sustain throughout the interview. Also, it is likely to wane your focus.
b) Inconsistent mannerisms and accent can annoy interviewers and your honesty might be in question.
We have discussed every different aspect of your interview, right from preparation to interview etiquettes. Despite all these suggestions and ideal strategy, the most important element in the interview is 'YOU'!
'YOU' can bring magic and charisma with your mystique which will make you a mighty contender. So, just be yourself and face the challenge!!!
All the Best!!!
