Indian School of Business (ISB) is one of the most prestigious global management institutes and is naturally one of the top choices for most of the MBA applicants.
However, students applying to ISB sometimes do not have a clear picture of life at ISB and after ISB. This can usually lead to 2 problems among applicants:
1) You do not write your essays properly leading to possible rejection.
2) You get selected due to your stellar profile but find out that your expectations are not matched once you join ISB
Through this thread, my friends from ISB and I will attempt to paint an unbiased picture of ISB to set the expectations right.
A word of caution: This is an open thread. Use your own judgement while interpreting some of the comments made by alums. Also try to validate is a person is actually an alum by checking school's website. It has a year-wise list of students who received dean's list award or the torch-bearer award.
Wishing you all the very best.

Misconception: "I have made it into ISB. This is IT. My life is only going to get better from here as I will get top notch placements."
Truth: ISB is an education institute and not a placement portal. You will get education of highest quality at ISB (trust me on this. it's fabulous). If you attend the classes well and make the most of it (doing your assignments etc. on your own), when the time for placements come you will sail through. But if you haven't done your homework, don't blame the institute for your miserable life.Your pre-ISB profile will help you get your resume shortlisted for the job interview. But the competition at ISB is mind boggling (at least in the top quartile) and it is only your hard work at ISB which will help you get that final offer.
So my advice: When you apply to ISB, think of it as if you are going to be in WAR for the next one year. This will help you march forward.
Cheers!!!

Misconception: "ISB is a level-playing field when it comes to academics."
Truth: ISB ain't a level playing field (at least in the core terms which is what matters when it comes to placements). The core terms are quant intensive and engineers and finance professionals have a clear edge over other students + they know how to slog as well 😃
So my advice: Post admit confirmation, take some time to go though basic statistics, operations, and accounting courses. This will help you make sense of ISB lectures in a much better manner.
Cheers!!!

Tip on your Goals essay: One thing that puts off almost all ISBians is faff (probably coz we have had enough of arbit class participations). Be realistic about your goals especially the short-term ones. For e.g. if you are coming from a technology background and you want to move into tech consulting or B2B sales, that's a fair deal. All you gotta show is your passion for that job and how your past exp + isb will help you.
Show your essay to your friend for a candid review and if he/she fills that the essay is going overboard, then that's a no no.
Remember, we ask for a 300 word essay for a reason. It's like an elevator pitch. If it's short, interesting, and too the point, then you are in, else...
Cheers!!!
How are the job prospects of some one who already has an MBA from a Tier 2 institute? Do placement companies look at them from a different angle?
I have scored 660 on GMAT (Essay 5 and IR 7) . Though I have excellent academics to back up this score plus work experience in Cognizant (will complete 2 years in Octobet), i doubt whether this score is enough. Do i need to take the GMAT again? Please suggest!!!
being a faculty and computer operator, can i apply for isb..plz guide
Does frequent job switch ( 3 changes in 3 years) affect application at ISB?
I have 6yr IT experience in 3 reputed MNCs...after that 3 years gap due to personal reason...does it make any sense if i try for ISB through gmat? or my fate has already been sealed, will appreciate honest advice.
I work as a Manager at Tata Steel. Joined in July 2011 and have earned a fair amount of experience in operations and project management. Score a 720 on my GMAT with a aw/ir score of 5/7. How do i go about my applications for ISB for the class of 2017? I know its already time for second round, but what elements in the LoR or Essay help me gain an edge over fellow applicants.
Kindly advise...

Hi everyone! I am a marine engineer.. will be spending the next year at Mohali.
Seeing my seniors who have been to ISB and other people from the merchant navy, as well as from some research I did, I realise that Operations is the best and perhaps most logical concentration to follow.
However, I wanted to know, do consulting groups like McKinsey ( sorry am not aware of a lot of big consulting groups) come to ISB looking for people in Operations? And keeping in mind that I have 4 years of work ex and bad acads in college, should I even think on those lines? or do I plan to stick to operations based companies purely (fmcg and retail)?
I have a 4+ years IT experience and I have a gap in my resume for 3 years after that due to personal reasons. Does it make sense to apply in ISB? Or the gap already makes me an unsuitable candidate? Please advice.
