Why Finance?

What is the difference between "Investment Banking" and 'Investement Analysis" profiles that are offered to mba grads?

P.S : Saw these profiles on IIM Rohtak Placement Report 2012

Dear forum,

Opting finance should be purely out of passion and interest. Career shift to finance - specifically financial markets is not all that smooth.

All those who wants to come to finance, just because we'll think that finance jobs will give them better pay packet. This will help us to settle in life very fast. All of us are of the same view that jobs in finance are abundant. Yes, there are many financial services.. which includes sales, marketing, intermediaries including brokerage firms and exchanges etc. Many of these jobs are low paid. Yes consulting firms will pay well however, they will look for big B-Schools.

It is more so from aspirants working in IT sector choose a career shift to finance jobs with a view to have better career progression.

One should ask a question to himself, that how much finance he/she can handle if the public money is given to him. This course will tell how much you do not know.

It is not true that every student chooses a career in finance will succeed. It is lot more depend on your own passion and drive to choose a career for finance to excel. A candidate choosing a career shift to finance need to have good understanding basic mathematics, statistics and economics. In addition, students need to undertake courses like CFA (USA) and FRM like certifications.

Can anyone add to my views to make the discussion more meaningful.

Buddy understand MBA is a step-by-step process...
For now worry only about cracking CAT..
If you do so great, then just concentrate on filling up forms and GD,PI
Once you reach this stage look for placement reports for kinds of profiles in Finance offered by various companies coming to various colleges from where you have admits...

Then decide to join college depending on satisfaction of job profiles offered by X institute..
Once this is done study for a semester @ B-School learn various concepts of Finance and decide about Profiles you wish to go in for before Summers and more so before Final placements...

ATB for CAT prep.. hope you Bell it!

P.S- Your diversity of grad stream will surely help you.. so gear up and give your best shot to CAT...

You have already stated that you have an "inclination towards MBA in Finance". Why is that? If you had to explain your rationale in the context of a regular conversation with a friend or family member, what would you say?

Once you have this basis on the table, you may get much richer advice from the folks on this forum on how to polish the answer for an interview.

Sounds like at least 1 person didn't get the intent of my previous post - my apologies.

To be clear, my intention is merely to push the poster to genuinely ask himself as to why is he interested in Finance in the first place. That interest has to have come from somewhere, I imagine? Generally speaking the best answers you can give in an interview are genuine ones. Agreed that the answers can be give more polish with external help.

@ Adiyogi : no need to apologise buddy .. hv removed my groan ... i thot that ur answer to a simple question was rather a complicated one.

@ Sumit : say "While working on a securities trading project , I have developed a keen interest in Equity Research. First I got to know some basics while giving the IT support and then inorder to know more I did NCFM certification as well. Now I have a good understanding abt securities and will try to develop expertise on it during the next 2 yrs. Equity Research has very good career prospects and I m sure I will do very well in it after my MBA."

More polished answers can also be given but I hv framed the answer keepin in mind that a software engineer will be speaking. You may do some modifications.

Sir, I have done my bsc it graduation 4m mumbai university in 2011...My hsc background is in science (vocational)....now for the last 1 yr i was preparing for upsc ias...but suddenly i m planning to do an mba & thats for final.....due to upsc prepn...i was not in any type of job.....wasted 1 yr...now want to go for finance in mba...have no bkground in economics or basic finance.....what to do....plz plz help....also i have no prepn of cat started till now....had given only cmat aise hi without prepn this time....got 5212 rank air...184/400.....was planning to do mba mktg...but had a chat with bro who's in crisil....found out the fact that guy like me who's not an extrovert & is shy...mktg is not the field...he gave the advice that mba finance would be good 4 u ...plz help...in dilemma.....

U have screwed up big time on your choices...y u left upsc??? not clear & y not mktg??? the reason u have is completely illogical & further Y finance?? u dont hav a reason for that too..!!!

Whoever said Mktg is not for introverts & finance is ... Do u think finance is full of people who sit in dark corners of the offices surrounddby files & computers....ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!

First & foremost u need to introspect yourself as to what do u want to do & why do u want to do it???? once u have concrete answers to those questions come back with your queries....
1. I have not left upsc...its just that i have postponed it due to family pressure....also ....i have not tested my financial/mktg skills anywhere...so dont know abt any of them...but I have the feeling that I can manage mktg/finance...how do u think can i find that out sir.....

2. also since i have not done any prepn for CAT & dont have work exp...& want to appear in CAT 2012...what shud I do ...suppose I decide to takeup Finance/Mktg in any institute thru CAT2012 an year later.....

3.Also is it that the top 25 in india or the top 5 in India are needed....bcoz i agree that not everyone gets into them...but Many people who are in industry & i know them say that after 3-5 yrs...in any company for progression the reputed institutes can make a difference of 6-7 lakhs of rupees p.a. in packg.....Suppose thru CMAT this yr...I get in mumbai college which are in top 30 list...than shud i join them.....???

Okay....so u have postponed ur UPSC....think abt it...will u do it later...will u be able to do it later....Are you not getting into MBA because of family pressure now??? All these questions need a concrete answer & U have to have these answers in your mind so that your reason of taking up a career decision is strengthened.

Suppose u want to get into marketing...educate yourself on the various subfields into marketing & identify your area of interest & then put ur skills to use...may be take up an internship in some firm with your area of interest.Simultaneously u can prepare for CAT also & put in our best shot. This is true for any field you choose......But whats imp is that u get into you field of interest else all u will do is whine about how u made a wrong decision in terms of a career.

& to answer your point abt top 5/25 B Schools....if u have talent you will get through eventually....a gud B school will get u placed but its u who has to work...& if u dont no matter which B school u come from u will be trashed.... i have seen examples of IIM-A guys trashed too!!!
