Why Finance?

abhinav_s75 Says
hello guys ...I will be doing MBA from say 30+ ranked B schools my question is from here what are the steps that I should take to reach the profiles offered similar to say big A,B,C,FMS XL....or it just an impossibility and i should not invest my time in it and look for other options

I think you may have to start from the back end profiles if you want to work in firms like JP , GSacs , Citi .. And once you are sure about your career path you can enhance your profile with FRM/CFA depending on your choices .. I see a lot of people doing CFA/FRM without actually knowing where there interest lies . Some of them are CFA L2 and FRM l1 which makes me a little confused of what they want to do ..

Rest i think Omkar sir and Naga sir can guide you better on this ..

Hii, i am an engineer working in a manufacturing company...i always wanted to pursue MBA- finance...however, with the kind of circumstances at the time of graduation, i could not secure admission in any of the top b schools....
currently i am having an experience of2 yrs, by the time i take admission next yr its gonna be 3 yrs...
Now all this experience is non finance..(its more suitable for operations)..
However...but original passion remains with finance....
so my query here is, how good an idea it is to pursue finance after working in non finance field for 3 yrs....both in terms of value addtion and the kind of roles offered at the time of placements...
Just to brief abt my acads,,
10th- 92%
12th- 89%
Grad- 59 % :(....( am i eleigible for top co.s ???)

Well there are many instances of ppl coming from Non-Finance backgrounds & making it big in Finance..so nothing wrong in that
But My suggestion wud be why not utilise the time in hand while u prepare for MBA to learn a bit abt Finance & try to get practical exposure by getting involved in costings etc at your company. That will add value & will help u justify why u want to come to finance

i would certainly love to do so...would like to know a bit about CFA...
how tough is it for ppl with non fin. background...

@all

Needed some opinions. I'm planning to go in for an education loan , most probably for the SBI scholar loan scheme. Now in the wake of recent rate cut by RBI and also its diktat to PSU banks for immediate rate cuts, do you guys think the education loan rates might also be lowered? And if so by when , at the earliest, do you see it happening ?

I guess with the new diktat , Banks will still take time to make the final decision , as they have to check their cost of borrowing and asset liability management issues too.. But if the rate of interest is floating then eventually i see the rates going up in the long term .. Not sure about the exact time line of when they reduce their base rate and also the reduction depends on the risk factor + tenure of the loan + amount ..

im going to undergo my 2 mnths training at yes bank under corporate and institutional banking . can u please provide the details what type of tasks i have to perform under corporate and institutional banking

it should not be very tough for you, considering that you have done BBA.. for engineers it is different as they need to justify the change in their stream...

firstly you have to link your BBA knowledge with an MBA.. show that it is an EXTENSION to what you already know and what needs to be done to fill the gap.. and hence an MBA..

now about your work exp... if you are working with a client in financial services, then it is a piece of cake... most of the people get away with this as software companies mostly have some banks as their clients..

if not, then try to analyse the work you do and link it with an MBA knowledge..
do 1-2 NCFM certifications to show your inclination towards finance..
that should help.. prepare a crisp answer and then u can ask any of the puys here to refine it..

Hi,
Just completed my B.Com from SJCC, Bangalore.
10th-90%CBSE
12th-90%State
BCom CGPA-5.15/6
CAT score of 90 percentile (without any preparations)
Career ambition of one day managing a Hedge-Fund/AMC account.
Looking for a job in the finance sector, with the work being a career builder and not so much a money maker. Company Rep and Work are the only criterion.
Any suggestions??
:)

NMIMS is a decent college.. even though Core specialization has more value, this course comes under the same brand name,..

If you are aiming for IIMs then wait for another year.. else waiting for one more year and then landing up in the colleges within the same league as NM would not serve the purpose.. anyways your IT experience also would not be of much use if you plan to do finance and marketing..

rest is up to you if you do not want to join this course at all..

Hi All

Can any1 please throw some light into the following financial profiles

1) Corporate and Transaction/Treasury Banking roles

2) Investment Banking(Middle end, IT and operations)

3) Debt and Equity markets (Front end)

4)Debt and Equity markets(Middle end, IT and operations)

5) Private banking and wealth management

6) Corporate finance and business development roles in FMCG companies(I guess any company be it IT also recruits from here, hope i am correct???)

Many of us associate finance with just front end investment banking and the lucrative path it is, so would be great if ny1 can say something about these profiles or of any other profiles which are offered

Also, is it necessary for IT people who are going to do MBA in finance to go for some certification???

1. Corporate and transaction banking is different that treasury, corporate/transaction basically is a front end role where you get to interact with clients and depending on the company/business/financials etc you suggest a debt profile. Basically something like when you're raising debt, you have to go through multiple rounds of discussions with these bankers in and then you get debt/loan sanctioned. Sometimes during a PE transaction, the transaction bankers come along with the PE guys and they discuss the debt aspect of the transaction.

2. Am not sure about treasury, but treasury bankers usually are involved in suggesting solutions pertaining to treasury operations/ cash management. So say you have a huge amounts of cash , ideally a treasury banker would suggest something which allows you to keep that cash in forms which are liquid and yet offer a stable return return for the time you're not using that cash.

3.Investment banking - I think a lot of people in this thread have explained that much better than I can, just browse through, most of them are really seasoned people! But just an overview that front end would be the part that deals with clients , middle end is usually a support role which assists the front end, IT as you can imagine is an IT support service. So IT would primarily be involved in designing the software platform and then providing support for it. But they're becoming really important because of algorithmic / quant trading.

4. Private banking and wealth management - Mostly deal with providing services to Ultra HNIs etc. So a private banker would be a person who would suggest you ways to wisely invest the money you have, probably come up with a portfolio which has a balance of risk/return which is in alignment with you personal objectives. A lot of the HNIs are investing into REIT ( Real estate investment trusts), which are basically pooled investment vehicles which buy estate/land/developed property, so a private banker who would be solely assigned to you would give you an idea of the good REITs. More or less on those lines.

5. Corporate finance roles in a FMCG - Corporate finance basically (in theory has 3 aspects) - investing decisions/ financing decisions/ dividend decisions. It's easier to understand their role if you understand the 3 aspects. For a new project/ new venture, the corp finance guys would give you an idea about the minimum rate of return required to cover the cost of raising funds/ what structure of debt and equity to raise funds in / how much we can afford to pay out as dividends. And corporate finance guys would also deal with working capital management, ensuring liquidity at all times, keeping an eye out on debtor/payable ageing etc. Am not sure they take in people from IT here, mostly they are from the internal finance department, or for places like Essar Airtel they recruit from IIMC. So it's either a top bschool or relevant work experience.

Hope this helps!

Hi All,

How difficult is it to switch to finance for someone with over 24 months of work ex in IT? Some of my friends hinted that it's extremely difficult and very rare even in the top 3 IIMs(ABC). Please guide me 😃

It's difficult but not extremely difficult, considering a major percentage of people in the IIMs are engineers with IT work experience and the finance placements from ABC are the best there are.

Profile change is the easiest if you're in the top 3 bschools.

What you can do to probably look attractive to a recruiter is to give the CFA Level 1 and try and complete the level 2 before you go in for your summers, if you land up a good summer placement in any of the finance profiles then you're all set to land up with a good profile during final placements.

Start reading up newspapers and more importantly, start reading the Economist, it's one of the best resources around if you want an insight into the current trends.
