Why Finance?

How does some one from Enng field like CS explain his need for doing MBA in finance. I love my engg but i also love finc !!

@Brooklyn when you are from Engineering field, you are contributing to the company's growth but not contributing to the business at a higher level..
you can always build on this to justify your interest for MBA.. about the finance thing, you should have some thing to link your profile/certification to finance.
Here when you say you 'love' finance, make sure you are prepared to be grilled on what is finance and some technical stuff..
so if you know it then only you can love it.. :)
@awassa build your argument bottom up. Your exposure of your current project has given you some insight in to wonderful world of finance. This interest has lead you to explore the universe and get your hands dirty by pursuing MBA in Finance. More so, you would be able to leverage this learning in your long term vision of urbanizing villages , which needs good sense of finance.Hence this en-devour(of doing MBA in Finance) would one day help you self-actualize and return back to society in long run.

There your are 😃 All the best!

so what all do typical MBA interview panelists ask for if people have love with finance. I have read quite a lot of economics , but to read for finance for interviews ??
@Brooklyn There was one guy with me in a group interview at SP Jain.. He also 'loved' finance like you.. Panel asked why and he said he loved numbers... panel directly told him that the answer was stale...
Then they asked him few technical questions abt balance sheet and p&l; statement, which he couldnt answer..

so if you are showing so much love for finance, better justify it either by linking it appropriately with your profile or by showing some knowledge...

can u tell what should one say if panel asks: you want to specialization in which stream and why?
@Brooklyn there is no standard answer.. you should be able to link it with your profile..

@manukk You have a nice profile.. for a fresher, I understand it is not easy to link as to why he wants to go for finance. You could read up some basic NCFM material and show your interest towards finance to the panel.

They do not expect you to know everything at that stage, but a basic understanding would be of great help.
Try to read up on some case study in finance which you could use during the interview as an example towards your awareness about finance.
@joyjitpal yes, CFA and FLIP certifications would definitely help.. before starting the CFA preparation, I suggest you read up on basic NCFM modules and see if you really want to do finance. directly jumping into CFA may be little tough for an engineer without any financial background.

Hi,

I saw this posting and I see many people who just want to get into finance, without actually saying what do they want to do in Finance. As a fresher, I understand that you won't know much about finance domain. Still you need to know what career option do you want to choose in finance. For that try to read about job descriptions of finance related jobs and see if that interests you. Do NOT try to focus on everything from IB to Corp Finance to Trading. Once you find an interest area, try to take guidance from people in relevant sector. Try building up your career on professional networking websites. Always choose what you like rather than what everybody else likes it. Try to find out your strength and work on it.

You can message me for guidance on your career option. When you message please specify your education background, what are your interest areas and (most important) what have you done till now in the direction of your interest area?

Please don't ask people to email you. We would prefer if you share your expertise on the threads itself so that more people can benefit and also it doesn't look like an advt.

You can prepare for CFA .. it is not that difficult .. you can download the schweser material for free from the net. if u are unable to understand , u can google the terms or search for related videos on youtube .. which are equally beneficial.

FLIP is a basic course and is very helpful too , but i doubt if they allow non-MBAs to appear for it. very nice visual material to help u understand every important aspect of finance.

@manukkHi,Thanks for your query. For corporate finance, you will need to be excellent in people networking. Here you will require networking with people in all business areas of company. Understand business aspects of different groups.Second most important skills required is mathematical, analytical and problem-solving skills. You will need to analyze different complex financial models and present them into easy to understand format to top management.Third you will need to understand accounting and book keeping concepts. As you are from engineering background, how much inclination do you have towards accounting and book keeping concepts? If these are the things that interests you than corporate finance is for you. Have you tried applying for this kind of jobs?

I am working on my accounting concepts. but i want to draw an answer .. means why i want to do mba after IT.. ??

Dear umarfe,

Though, your query is addressed to respected quantmaster and sachin, hope you do not mind if I join the discussion too.

I would like to shortly note, that if you are really interested in pursuing degree in Finance and especially Corporate Finance, it would be good for your to sort out the universities and the programmes they offer. For example, our Master of Finance will offer 5 concentrations, one of which is Corporate Finance and you could choose it accordingly as per your interest.

The same comes with work experience: each university and the programme will have separate requirements. We, for example do not require work experience for Master of Finance, however if you have any, we will consider it. But we would need a minimum three years of it for those, who go for MBA courses. Therefore, it is essential to check the requirements of different universities.

Now, if you want to go for Finance study, usually the first university degree of any field is required. however of course it is easier for those who have done bachelor in this field already.

When it comes to job, you should apply to universities who have good records of placements and you could go directly to the position of your chosen field. Our Master of Finance has Risk Management, Corporate Finance, Account and Taxation, Development Finance and Capital Markets and are proud to give one of the best placements to our students. So it is always easier to go for the desired field directly, rather than try to change it later on.

Regards,
