i think it's high time we all start discussing our doubts we face while goin thru d study material. i am sure most of us do have some problems which we want to discuss. i guess most of us r following the schedule given in d cfa material. so let us start posting our doubts. people can post what they have fiinished studying in a particular week. then all of us can ask dat person doubts in dat particular area if we have any. if we rigorously follow dis schedule, our concepts will also will be cleared & we will know how serious r prep. have been. what say puys?

Thanks Sneha and Funemployed for this initiative.

I am on Reading 6 (DCF Applications). I have question that :

It is preety evident from the book that NPV rule is superior and prudent for choosing a project. But still why does Financial Managers all over the world favour / discuss a project on the basis of IRR and not NPV.

Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Hi All,

I am a graduate engineer with a work ex of aprrox 2 yrs with Siemens Power Engg., gurgaon. I plan to take the CFA L-1 in June 2010. I have just recieved the schweser notes from laxmi xerox. Went through the notes & it certainly has given me the shivers on my decision of taking CFA.

I anyways want to start. I do not have any study plan. I did try to find something online n in the various threads on PG regarding the same, but nothing much.

I do not think that taking up just 1 book at time, finishing it & then moving onto the next book is the right thing to do. This is specifically where I need litle guidance. What books to start simultaneously. How to set deadlines for say chapters n then books n the whole syllabus. Its a problem coz I am reading all this for the first time.

As you guys seem to have started with the prep could you pls guide me thru as well. I have gone thru the official website cfa.org. There they just mention the effort required in hrs but not the planning per se.

It would be really helpful if you could let me know how you all have planned your prep.

Thanks]
Val

Hi guys,
I am a graduate engineer working as a business analyst with work ex of around 4 yrs in the IT sector of a foreign bank. I currently draw around 7.5 lpa. I am planning to take CFA L1 in June'10. I am yet to register for it though if the center happens to be in India. I have read through this thread and a few other threads and most of them mention that I'd be able to get only entry level jobs after clearing L1 as i haven't had any prior experience in finance. Though i'm interested in taking up finance related jobs, how good are the prospects in India. Will it be more or at least as rewarding as my current job is? I am quite confused and I hope you guys can help me.

Thanks in advance

Hi Spark,

I've enquired a lot regarding the same from different sources. What I can tell you is that when it comes to packages, there's a big difference between finance related jobs n core fin job profile.
You must be aware that packages for even freshers (MBA Fin atlst in India) in core fin jobs could be as high as 25lacs per anum. On an average a fin guy should be able to back a package of 11-13 lacs, considering a top 10 Indian B-school. Ofcoarse, if we can overlook last yrs placement which were badly hit by the recession.
However, if you are thinking of changing your field to fin then I do not think that CFA L-1 would suffice for the purpose. It may help you in the states but not in India. You would need to take all 3 levels of CFA for changing field & a good growth. The contemparary way of going about it is going for an MBA in finance. You can go for an executive program & yes to build on to your resume a CFA L-1 would definetly be a good addition (as an add on you can undertake a couple of NCFM modules).
As such there are other coarses in fin available (pls look up on net) as well but none would be better than an MBA Fin for a person of non finance background.
Also, this info is mostly relevant for Indian scenario. There are many effective coarses available in finance in universities abroad beside an MBA.
All the best :).

hey me 2 from ahd.......so what r u doing currently....

Hey puys,

I am a graduate engineer with over 2 yrs of work exp in IT Manufacturing sector from Bangalore. As I am thinking of changing my field of expertise, I am planning to appear for CFA L1 in June 2010 where go for an executive PGDPM program in Finance. I would like to know whether there are any kind souls from who can guide me on the same? I've heard on the discussion board bout the "Laxmi Xerox" where CFA material is available? As i am based out of Bangalore, can anyone help me on this? Is it really worth going for notes and prepare or refer books given by the CFA council.

Any more pointers from experts will be appreciated.

Hi,
I had mailed a query to the CFA institute to inquire if June '10 exams will be held in India. Here's the reply..

Dear ,

Thank you for your email. The 17 July decision from the Delhi High Court only applied to the December 2009 CFA exam. At this time, June 2010 candidates from India must register to take the exam outside of India. The next scheduled hearing is 8 October 2009.

You can view a complete list of test center here: http://www.cfainstitute.org/cfaprog/resources/examdetails/testcenter.html.

Feel free to contact me again if you have any other questions.

Warm Regards,

I hope the exams could be scheduled in India.

V@lentino,
it all depends on how your level of understanding. Say for eg. You can outline the sections as Easy/Difficult and decide on the schedule.

As in my case i started with Ethics, Standards and Quantitative Analysis Volume along with Corporate Finance and Portfolio management.

It depends...
However a note of caution...whatever schedule you prepare stick on to it with discipline...don't experiment again and again on that..

Hope it helps...!

Cheers...!

Laxmi Xerox can courier you notes anywhere in India or you can get them yourselves.
You can get them from Ber Sarai in Delhi too.

Thanx so much knight.
A quick question though. Is there some kinda coaching or guidance available for CFA?? I put up in delhi. I do already have some problem understanding a few concepts/solved egs. Besides this forum where else can i really take up my doubts?

Hi guys,

V@lentino,
There is coaching provided by www.Stalla.com for CFA.
In india the education partners are the New horizons.

I have pasted the details of New Horizons on one of my earlier posts. Please check it out.

Also, there are loads of sites from wherein you can get information and help about CFA.
However, the best thing as of now I feel would be that first read the curriculum and then only look for other sources.
We can discuss on problems/graphs/equations provided in the curriculum.
Doing this, we all have access to the discussion source.

What says puys....

Hey Darpan,

There are various techniques used world over to analyze a project. The most used are NPV,IRR,Payback period,Discounted payback period.

These can be used as a single measure or combination of 2/more to analyse better.

Please go thorugh Table 13 and the follow up on that table in Capital Budgeting (Corporate finance and Portfolio management)

Hi All,
I have sent a mail to the CFA institute to inquire abt the hearing.
Will update on the reply received.

Hi,
I have enrolled for June 2010 Level I exam with Katmandu,Nepal as the test center.
There was a hearing on 8th October '09 to include Mumbai,India as a test center.
However, I found that Mumbai is still not in the Test Centre list.
Can you kindly provide some updates on this?
Thanks,
