Am lot into reading and into event management....
Have a couple of questions:
1> How much weightage is given to the CAT score when the final list is made?
2> Have done a beginner's levl course in French but as of now its completely washed out. Should I brush it up? Will it help?
3> Am into support as well as development. But have done very critical things in support. If I highlight support will it act as a dis-advantage?
thanks

I feel a little silly to ask you this , but I am asking this aas it would help me in forming my own answer, see I am pursuing bachelors course from ISI and people from my college end up doing some kind of modeling jobs as an analyst what exactly i will be ending up say if i am able to convert my call at IIM Indore, basically what i am asking you is what exactly is management?...you may wonder if i don't what is management then why did i bother taking cat?...my reasons are like 1> i have heard the growth in analyst sector is lesser than in management
2>if i join PGP course at IIM Indore then as the pedagogy is based on the case studies my understability of the market will drastically i mprove as the industry exposure at my college is absolute zero percent
3> there is social sensitivity involved in the job of a manager, which is inherently absent in the kind of jobs that flock our campus
4> I have fascination for the word investment banker...peple from my place donot get job as an investment banker...but they do from iims ..what exactly is an investment banker..and how does iims course facilitates athe birth of investment banker?
Hi Karl
first of all it's not at all silly if you don't still now know why to do MBA...i was in the same condition last year january...in fact i could not find the answer to the question till the last moment till the time i sat with my dad asked myself 100s of times why do i want to do MBA...in fact you are going on the right track to find the answer...
your first point starts your quest for the question why management...it's ok if want to gi in the field which gives more growth...but then growth in what sense...money???personal skills???satisfaction in contributing somewhere???thrill??? and the likes...think more about it...and again ask the similar questions to probe further...what does growth mean???
second point refers to question why MBA...don't talk about pedagogy...given an option between better B-Schools and with fatter pay-package and IIMI...what would you choose...this surely reflects in fakeness of the answer...think about why MBA...why would a course in MBA give you which you will lose by not doing MBA???how would doing MBA, be it from any institute, help you in your future career???
even for 3rd point dwelve deep into the question...why social sensitivity???why social sensitivity???how does it matter to you???
and do not tlak about i-bank till you know it inside out...they will literally kill you in the interview if you don't know about i-bank...and believe me they know more about i-bank than you tll you actually haven't worked in the area...
Finally @everyone
as you must have read in the post,,,why Management wants to know why do you want to take up a career of management....whereas why MBA wants to know how doing MBA will help you in the career you want to take up...you can be in management career even without doing MBA...as you might have read in the newspapers that companies are now pickng up graduates too for i banking and all...or say dhirubhai ambani was a manager but he did need an MBA...

i think samcat would be more helpful in this question...but as far as i feel,,,they most probably will ask you more on your workex...but still brush up with your acads...as such they can ask you anything under the sun...but your strategy should be to block most of the holes...

most of the time in interviews it all depends where u manage to lead the interview, at this stage just prepare well for all type of questions, and don't bluff anything in the interview, prepeare some subjects very well and if they ask you acads questions then tell them clearly wat area you are most comfortable with,
My K interview was fully based on my work ex(even when i had only 8 months of work ex), then I interview was based on acads and awareness, they started asking about half-wave rectifier and i told them clearly that i don't know anything about electronics..

hello arpit
first thing what has happened has happened...so no point thinking about it...yes CAT carries some weightage in final selection...but then there are GD,interview, your form, workex, family background and lots of other criteria for your final selection...they look at your overall personality...CAT is just an elimination process...now is the selection process...
everything you know matters in the interview...it's on you how you want to show them what you know...can you guide them asking you about french???decide yourself...
all the professors there are in management field...and moreover you have to show them you are a good manager...show them the management perspective of what you have done...
i hope i helped...

hi,
although some weightage is given to cat score...but at this stage just assume that all of you are at par and everyone has fair chance of making it...weightage for cat score varies from 40-60% for different B-schools but all 98-99% junta have same type of scores and hence cat score dosen't make much of difference...
don't write or mention anything with which you are not comfortable...especially not french...coz some professors are proficient in french

i was also into support and development..but since i felt that i won't be able to make any impact by mentioning it, i skipped it....if you can really prove that job was very critical and you have done full justice with it...then go ahead and mention it..no harm in doing so!!!
:)
Hi people.

Work Ex: 5 months in IT Consultancy
Seniors i have some querries:
1. Around how many students are there in a single GD session and what is the approx duration of the GD?
2. However i have done my graduation from mechanical with some awards winning projects in the core. How do i defend my shift to the IT sector. Actual reasons being better growth opportunities and better compensations. are these reasons sufficient to convince them?
3. Since am just 5 months old i just know about my share of work and if asked about IT sector, i may not know about other technical stuff related to computers. Since , there is still some time left for the interview do i need to learn those fundas as well.?
4. What are the tentative dates for the interview? Last time they were in the first week of march in delhi. Do they always happen around the same dates.?
Thanks in advance.

Ok ankit,
first things first
after going through 5 IIM interviews and listening to countless others I am sure about one thing
NEVER GET SURPRISED!!! COME WHAT MAY!!!
and next thing that i learnt albeit a liittle late is that
ITS OK IF U DONT KNOW SOMETHING!!
we are not supposed to have the world's know;edge inside our tiny little brains and everyone there knows it. So much so that they excuse a mechanical engineer for not knowing one of his core subjects and a business graduate for not knowing maslow's heiracrhy theory.
All we need to do is tell them what we know and then wait for them to grill us on that.
Coming directly to your questons...
Yes u cant run away from acads saying its something u did more than 3 years ago. Also you dont need to quote the page numbers of the textbook when they ask u a concept question. However what u r supposed to know is how u applied ur engineering knowledge to ur job.
Also Work related questions will depend on what u write in ur form. If u fill ur form with incidents/ mentions./ narrations of work and exrracurriculars ur academic questions will be reduced.
As for the placements the report is given on the IIM I webiste and I can assure you that BSchool placements are growing exponentially in every institute worth its salt. So placements should be the last thing when u secure admission to an IIM. Cause in India there is none better

Plus my friends have more than answered ur questions... anything else.. feel free to write back

.
Hello,
Last year there were Less than 10 students in IIM I GDs. The duration of the GD was 30 minutes i guess cause i remember the 8 of us talking for a lot of time within that duration. Also since its a case study after a certain amount of time the entire group needs to think cause the points thought of at the beginning dry up and all life is sucked out of them.
The dates for the interview are spread longer than the others as IIM LIK give out many more calls than A B and C. Thus its a wide spread that is difficult to comment upon.
These answers are specific to your profile as u have only 1 call and it makes the GD PI all the more vital for you.
Good that u have won awards for projects. Highlight that fact very well and read up on those concepts/ theories as if u get a tehnical person on the person he may like to ask you on alll this. As for the shift to IT, tell them a mix of reasons real and good to hear. For example mention better opportunuties (the only jobs availbe) alongwith interest in IT as India emerging sector.
As for your little workex they may ask u more of application stuff that is a good mix between acads and work ex. That way they get to see what sort of involvement you have in your work. Also as u mentioned the remaining time you shud use it to probably talk to others around you so that u undersatnd the company better, the projcts it does, the competition it faces, etc.
All the best
Thanks..
But while talking about work i am already acquinted about the stuff about the company like you mentioned such as competition , work done etc. i was more curious about the technical stuffs like coding, programming etc. which do not come into my domain but can come later if i were to stay in the company. Do i need to have any idea about them as well ?
can you tell me what samcat is ?

Sameer, you got a new product kya?
Hi alok,

who is samcat would have a better question...his reply must be coming soon on the thread...

Thanks..

no you actually don't need to have too deep a knowledge about the technical stuff...basic knowledge is enough...whatever you have done,,,just be thorough with that...

ok...looks like i've been transformed into a commodity in my absence 😞
abt work-ex...some of u hv query reg how well u shud know ur academics ?
my overall exp last yr in arnd 8 intrvws suggested that work-ex was a gr8 thing to hv if u wanted to run frm acads (especially if greater than 15 mnths)....i was rarely asked more than 3-4 q's frm my engg....but expect to be grilled abt ur work...ur exact profile, the kind of responsibilities u handle,ur achievements,ur failures (imp), q's pertaining to ur company (turnover, profits, top ppl etc), the sector stats like say if its IT, then %age of exports contributed by IT, major players,ur company's direct competitors, & anything that's in news like trade unions in IT, sops given to IT industry, NASSCOM etc etc...
thats the good part of story..
the sad part is tht 'I' was the only intrvw where i was not asked much abt my work-ex.. & the intrvw had lot of acads...i specifically remember q's frm Electronic ckts, digital ICs... so as Pranav said expect anything !! tho for ppl with more than 2 yrs work-ex, i dont think the acads answer will be given high weightage, but how u tackle them, ur reactions will certainly matter...so general advice is brush up a bit on basics but pay more attention to ur work related q's...
hope that helps
Thanks..

Hi
It is not that very important in havin knowledge about programmin and stuff... but yeah on the flip side u shld noe a bit basic things about the languages, softwares and tools used in d company.. this will show ur inquisitive nature and this might help u during the interview...
Rest u shld be thorough with ur acads, ur company and the industry as well.. expecting questions like the value of exports, contribution to the GDP and stuffs...

Anirudh
