Hi,
Myself Debarghya Roy.Presently working in a MNC from feb 2012 a s/w engg.I am having a gap of nearly 2 yrs in my professional career.I am 2009 passout.worked in contract for 7 months and left it in 2010 may because i had to undergo an operation .Again i had joined in another company in 2012.So I want to know will this gap affect in getting into a good b-school or getting a job after completing a MBA?Please help me so that i can start my preparation for CAT.
PLZ help me guys................
@Debarghya.roy If your gap from May 2010 to Feb 2012 was again due to the same medical reasons you had to leave your contract job after 7 months, then you can easily justify the gap. If it is not so, if you have some genuine/valid reason then the gap won't be a problem. Else if you were sitting idle all the time for those 2 years then it might be a roadblock in your admission to a B-school. Not that you can't get an admission anywhere. But then you'll have to somehow convince the interviewer about the reasons for the gap.

@ajaygovindg okes..i understood.Actually the thing is that after the operation i had to take a long rest. Then recovering from my health problem i startd preparing for cat .but the percentile was not good. Then i thought i might end up with a big gap so i joined in MNC and side by side preparing for cat in my free time. Now i want to join a institute for cat coaching.so will it affect......?

Hi friends..I am standing at crossroads in my life, with 1 question to which I am not able to get a clear answer.I hope I will finally find the answers here.

Here are my academic results at a glance-

10th-94%

12th-92%

B.E.-78%

I am working for a Japanese Auto Giant, drawing close to 10.5 lacs/annum.I have a total wrk ex of 3 years(1.5 years with an Indian Manufacturer,a leader in Commercial vehicles).

I have always been keen on an MBA-Marketing,and believed that I should do my MBA after sufficient work-ex.Now that I have some experience,I am in a state of utter confusion.

An MBA would cost me on an avg 10-15 lacs(Correct me if I am wrong),plus the 2 years invested would mean I am drawing no salary(25 lacs).

Having invested close to 40 lacs,I understand from various posts that the median salary at top notch b-schools is in the range of 15 lacs.

If I purely look at this from an ROI point of view,I am not getting a justification.I am looking for stronger points that supersede this aspect.

To add,I am doing well professionally and hope to get a promotion within a year.

Please enlighten me with your views and bail me out of this confusion...

Thanks in advance...

MBA is not only about investment and its return. The thing that really matters is what u really wanna do. I am assuming that you are currently pusuing a technical job. So, the question is, do you want to continue with a technical job or want to get involved in strategies of the company and make a serious impact on the company's growth. I am not saying that a person can't make a serious impact with his technical abilities but technical guys are not involved(unless they are genius) in business decisions. Suppose your company wants to launch a new bike in the market, it'll be the management people who will decide in which segment shall they launch, where shall they produce, how should they create a buzz in the market about the new bike? So, any organization leaves such decisions to MBA grads as not everyone is Narayana Murthy. Moreover, if you want to grab a top position in any company, you have to show them management skills which is more likely if you have an MBA degree. A technical person may have mgmt abilities but he might not get chances to show them.

@RTR_Naman -

Thanks.

To add,I am not in a technical job.I have been in marketing, across various functions like product launch, dealer management etc. these 3 years.

I am looking for something on the same lines as mentioned by you. What I am keen on,is to know how much of a leap MBA can give me.

Man u r doing a job for which I am trying to do MBA, lucky you 😃 .I am an automobile enthusiast and want to change the Indian automobile scenario. Ok, leaving apart my aspirations,
an MBA degree will help you to grow leaps and bounds in an organization with added responsibilities on your shoulders and as far as investment is concerned, don't bother about it as it won't matter in the long run..And in case of your job profile, an MBA will definitely make a big difference.
@psp88 Since you're already into marketing profile, an MBA from a top 20 B-school will definitely help you to scale up and move into people management profile, junior/middle management depending on where you do your MBA from.

The ROI calculation you have (including opportunity cost of no salary of 22lakhs for 2 years) is clearly not how one would look at MBA. If that's how one looks at ROI from MBA i.e. give x lakhs and get back x+1 lakhs in 1st salary itself then invstment in mutual funds, fixed deposit, commodities, real estate etc. would very much solve the purpose? So is that really what MBA is about? The knowledge you gain, the different perspective you get (again all dependent on how you work hard during MBA to get this) does not hold any value? Isn't it worth at least a few lakhs?

Is it possible to get admission to a Top tier 20-30 bschool with a 2 year gap and profile as follows :10th : 77%
12th : 87.4%
grad : 64.64% (BTech ECE-2011 passout)
work exp : no
After my b tech......mnc's were out of my reach as they are asking 70 in btech...i was strictly looking for a PS bank job.....every time i don't get either due to g.k cutoff or final score after gd/pi.........i felt cat (mba) would be much better .........as i can get into MNC's mean while i have done course on testing and am currently doing a project on it

As this is more of a general query so I thought better to post in a more general thread apart from certification thread to get more ideas and this will also potentially help other aspirants having same situation as mine. I m very thankful to ajaygovind and Mad-head for such a deep insight.

I m 4th year undergrad from Mechanical engg. department. I have made up my mind to get a MBA degree this year or next year.
I have given my CAT exam this year with last 2 weeks preparation(approx 20 mocks in those days with 80-90+%iles but a little analysis) and sole aim of getting in IIMC or at last FMS(bcoz of its ROI). I was a NC OBC candidate so thought getting a 95%ile+ and clearing cutoffs of IIMC & FMS will be a lot easier the main exam .

This casual attitude reflected in my exam also as I was able to give an attempt of 21-22 ques in quant(had 2-3 wrong questions in the paper hence didn't attempted those) and 29 attempt in verbal (don't know anything about accuracy but i had 75-80% in mocks). So I don't have any idea if I will be getting a call and will be able to convert it.

I have XAT left but now thinking of sitting in placement being motivated by Pre-placement talks of BCG/Mckinsey etc though I didnt got shortlisted as most of the companies preferred Masters students .
Since, getting to a top position in the corporate world is my aim I am building up my profile as a Technical management one. Even I did 5 MBA courses related to organisation behavior, HR, management of technology, economics, administrative psychology, global communication in my Bachelor's degree only. And now I am aiming higher to build up my profile better and better in these years (not more than 2) which will help me to get into some of the top Consulting/operations/marketting/IT(if they dont want coder) firms after my MBA.
So I think i have given you a glimpse of the thought process i m having these days.
Please guide me through my situation of building up my profile better with some insight over placement which will be starting this December.
Money is no issue(like getting into finance) but having a career with lot of adventures, excitement and global exposure is my long term aim.

Thanks in advance...

Nothing is impossible buddy. But I also donot want to give you wrong hopes , profile matters a lot. But in some colleges like MDI, NITIE, which are in the top 20 , CAT score that counts a lot. So if you have weak profile then trying scoring high in CAT .

ATB!!!
@Improver I guess you wouldn't want me answering here also!! 😛 😛 :mg: I'll leave it to other puys since I believe I've given you quite a lot of "global gyan"! Still if you feel you've not had enough from me, feel free to PM me!! 😁 :mg:
@ajaygovindg Ya I didnt wanted to irritate you anymore by asking more and more question as being an Improver I always have questions in my mind to how to do things in the best possible way. Hence, my quest for "global gyan" will never end. More I get more I want.
So, I left it over other puys to give their thoughts over this as more diverse thoughts I have, better I will be in a position to take important decisions regarding my career.
Even I have my last exam of this semester tomorrow so kinda feeling VELLA today, hence its just a trailer of what i got ...

Hi guys,

I posted this in another thread as well but I found this thread so I am posting here too.

I am a graduate of the prestigious University of Chicago with a major in Economics and a minor in English literature.

I did not get any summer internships in the US as I did not know how the system works. Note here, that I am from a rich propertied family and my family does not really know about the whole IB/Consulting world and never educated me to get a job.

Now I am desperate because I hate working in my family business, even though I am going to lead it one day (when the current generation retires ~10 years). I am 24.5 yrs of age.

Will any respectable Indian employer consider me for my prestigious BA? I got an offer to be an intern with Deloitte but the intern stipend was so insulting I rejected it outright. Other offers have been in the Rs.25,000 range as people know I am desperate. Why is the University of Chicago not recognized in the finance/consulting industry in India? How do I get my resume to them?

I have just done my GMAT and have gotten a 740. What chances do I have to get back to the US for an MBA at a top-8 university and subsequently get a $200,000 associate job in an investment bank?

Do answer all my questions please.

@porcelin First of all one question for you: Why you want to do an intern in India. If your plan is to be in India and get a Job in India then its not necessary to get an Intern in India.

Now answers to your questions:

"Will any respectable Indian employer consider me for my prestigious BA?"
Yes they will consider you for a Job. Its a trend here that generally companies dont have internship programs. And if they are going to give you an offer for internship then don't expect much in return.
In India generally you can get a max of 50-60k for internship and generally stipend ranges from 10-15k to 40k. I know this feels pretty low for you as you are not adapted to this.

But what I suggest you is to get a quality intern rather than looking at the stipend you will get. I think stipend should not really bother you. If you have got an offer for Deloitte and you think that you will have a quality experience there then don't look over the stipend given. You can earn good job and lot of money after that with a quality experience in job.

"Why is the University of Chicago not recognized in the finance/consulting industry in India? How do I get my resume to them?"
May be because of lack of awareness but what i think is more important is that they may be thinking that you may have been out of touch of this culture and hence it will be difficult for you to adapt here. So I suggest you to put some points in your resume which will contradict these facts and demonstrate your adaptability and ofcourse your capabilities (may be you academic achievements, entrance exam scores, projects).

"How do I get my resume to them?"
Go to their website and maximum top companies have internship opening in their internship section. You may like to visit site of DB, Goldman Sach, BCG, Morgan Stanley, Capital one, Exl, Citi Bank, Mckinsey, etc.

"I have just done my GMAT and have gotten a 740. What chances do I have to get back to the US for an MBA at a top-8 university and subsequently get a $200,000 associate job in an investment bank?"
This is a good score and you will be able to clear cutoffs of most of the top MBA colleges. But the final selection depends upon your acads, work exp, SOP, recommendation, extracurrics, and maybe social services. So try building up your profile as per and build a good SOP/resume and you will definetly get into the top bschools and subsequently a $200000 job.

Hope this clears most of your doubts.

Hello

I have done BE in electrical and electronics in 2011 but didnt got job as my college was low ranked private college. Today i repent that what i had done wasted 4 year...after grad i started preparing for cat and given cat 11 and scored very less percentile than i have given again in 2012 but my dilema is that since i m working with my father retail busines(shop) of Hardware after grad. and preparing for cat and my target is top b schools to do mba or i ll not do.. so i want to know whether my work with my father will count as work ex and which work ex it would be to mention? or will it be sufficient cause for justifying gap after grad. and truly speaking i m not intrested in engineering field now as i m from business family background and very keen to crack cat and do mba from top b schools to overcome my faultss..plz help me i ll be very grateful to those who provide me assistance coz i m flg depressed now as my all friends doing job coz they are not from business background and i m alone doing busines with my father... plzzzzz reply to my query i ll be grateful
hey guys and gals

plz help me

@Nipul I don't think that is a full time paid work experience that the IIMs seek unless you get a certificate for it. But you may use it to justify the gap you have after grad. You will get call at good percentile from the IIMs based over your acads but clearing GDPI after that is a tougher job as you have to justify the gap. So i suggest you to build up your profile after your exams are over. Go find a job, work in a NGO, get some certification(recently i came up to a certification course in Business management to be held in IITD n IFMR). This will help in being placed too.
Hope this helps... PM me for further query...
