Personal Dilemma Related Queries

@porcelin Your score is good but the fact that you do not have sufficient work experience may be a hindrance to your MBA plans. How long have you worked in your family business? If you can show at least 2-3 years of full time work, then probably you will be competitive at a good MBA program. If you have a bit more work experience, you will be competitive at any top program. My suggestion is, since you are already into your family business, work there for few years as your Chicago degree will not be given due credit in India because of lack of awareness. You can then do an MBA abroad.
@Improver thanks ... i understood...

Ok,
I think I may get my answer here, so I am writing here.

I am last year B.tech student from not-so-reputed college, will be passing out in june 2013.
My aggregate is quite a low and I am sure I am not gong to get job anywhere,
I appeared in CAT 12 without much preparation and attempted 37 questions with accuracy level of around 90%. Seniors tell me to apply to SPM,NIRMA And other same tier colleges,
though I believe in my self, I think I can crack CAT with more percentiles next year with enough preparation, this year I even couldn't devote 2 hours a week to CAT.
So I am planning to prepare for CAT'13 . But still In dilemma, whether should I apply to Nirma,SPM,Bimtech,BIM-T etc. this year or not..
And yeah, I will be sitting at home ideal doing nothing after This June. So please guide me. what should I do? Either should Prepare for CAT 13 or apply to low ranked Bschools this year?

@missionCAT13 Why don't you look for a job and start working after june and then think of CAT?

Sir as I said,
My college doesn't have good placement records,
Only top 3 from the class get job here,
And I am one of those average students whose CGPA is below 6.5 ..

My name is Samay and I am 28 years old. I am business economics graduate from delhi university. After graduation I never got a chance to work in the finance field. So i started working with an education start up and due to unavoidable circumstances, last years, i had to resign. i am not able to start anything now.

My real confusion is i want to study and restart my career in a new way and work with good company. At this age what can i study which will give boost to my career. I have heard about CFA but not sure whether I will land into a job or not. Moreover the investment of time is huge. Kindly suggest me different degrees which could help to sail through

Regards
@missionCAT13 I would suggest that give your best shot at XAT and apply to 90+ institutes like Somaiya, nirma, lbsim, fore and the others which you have mentioned. Take admission this year itself.

Reason is, nowadays all top institutes look for overall profile. Even if you get a good percentile, your engg college brand name is not good, your acads are only average and apart from not having any work experience, you will also have a gap year. I don't see why any top institute should be interested in you. However, if you can find a job, work for 2-3 years, then you should be competitive for a top institute with a good CAT percentile.
@samay21 If you're interested in Management/Business then you can look for MBA, and there are 1 year programs where time factor will not be big concern, and I would recommend only that as 2 year course will not be worth it for your profile (I assume you worked for around 6-7 years at least in the start-up)

If you're not sure of investing even the 1 year, then certifications are the only way forward. You can check for certification from CFA, NCFM, FLIP etc. and then you'll have to search for a job yourself. It will be tough, but then worth it, if you want to get into Finance profiles after so many years.

@Nipul I don't think that is a full time paid work experience that the IIMs seek unless you get a certificate for it. But you may use it to justify the gap you have after grad. You will get call at good percentile from the IIMs based over your acads but clearing GDPI after that is a tougher job as you have to justify the gap. So i suggest you to build up your profile after your exams are over. Go find a job, work in a NGO, get some certification(recently i came up to a certification course in Business management to be held in IITD n IFMR). This will help in being placed too. Hope this helps... PM me for further query... ATB for your future aspirations...
@Improver Thnks for replying sir but i am not getting job related to me fiels i m trying since my graduation therefore i finaaly decided to join my father's business and prepare simulateously for CAT ...My 10th % is 81 ; 12th - 69 and grad:- 77 ...else u prefer me course which i can do to get decent job
Hello Guys,This is Anant and before asking anything, I would like to introduce myself..
I have completed my MBA with marketing in 2011 from an average college and placed in HCL Infosystems with a sales profile. After 1 year of getting placed, HCL brought some hierarchical changes in its system. We were 7 guys who were forced to resign becoz of these changes. Fortunately I got my second job and working here with same profile with a take home salary 22000. Since I want a peaceful life, not only money with lots of tension. .. that is y I have started preparing for SSC CGL 2013 just 1 week before.
But because of excess pressure of target, I am not able to concentrate on my studies as I should. Also since we have to do lots of travelling , which kills time and i m not getting proper time to study. Now I have 3 options, plz help me out to choose right one....
1. Continue the job as well as preparation and I might get a good govt job in 2013 or may be in 2014 or may not.
2. Leave the job... try my best... If I get a good govt job then well n good... if not, I can come back to sales profile after 1 or 1.5 year (tell me about the chances to get this type of sales job again)
3. try to convince my company and boss to give 3-4 months leave (with the help of any excuse) and give 100% time to my study with a hope to crack SSC CGL 2013.
Please go through it and suggest ASAP ... PLZ plz plzzzzz...

Are yaar dont keep looking for the thing you want right now.. Your final aim is MBA na so just go and have some work experience not particularly to your field only. Go and work over ny job you can find. One of my senior even became salesmann and even worked in a BPO after his grad from NIT!!! Which moreover helped him gain enough command over communication skills and he was able to convert 27 out of 30 calls with similar acads like you including all new IIMs, IITs, NMIMS, etc... So dont just sit idle and think... go out to the real work and rock it out.... All the best for your future aspirations....
@Ananthaina Hi,just to give u a perspective SSC requires serious concerted effort and the competition is tough. And it also depends on your current level of preparedness. There are news that SSC will have mains section this year(not sure).
if u want a peaceful life why on earth would you want to return to sales job again.wont it be a compromise.
Start concentrating on SSC,IBPS and other exams and most importantly get to know what it takes to clear these exams.
@freakonomist

Thanxx bro... coming back to sales is only a last option for me... I can say that I am good in math and reasoning but average in English and even poor in GS... even I have started my prep for ssc cgl with my strategies ..... Should I give a break to my job?

Hello, This is my first post here. I am a btech cse student.. 2011 batch.. I was a bright student in the college and thought i would get a good job after college but my college was not good & due to recession, few companies came for the off campus also. I gave all but didn't get through any. Currently, i have been working in a small company as a QA Engineer with 7k only. My all friends are better than me. My sisters are also working in good MNCs. I am really feeling bad these days. Don't know what to do.

I am really good in my job and feel like i deserve something good. I want to earn more but don't know the path. My parents are forcing me for MBA. MBA is good but i don't know about this path. Is it really my path?

What to do? Any suggestions guys? Please throw your advises here.

@yogesh098 dude first of all be happy that you have a job, i know many people of 2011 and 2010 batches, still searching for jobs inspite of having more than 70% in academics

my advice for u is to stop comparing your self with others....it seems you are a negative minded guy...so try to eradicate it from you

and regarding mba the decision should be taken by yourself, post graduation is always useful....but mba is costly in india... so first know how much you can spend on mba and then go with admissions

just try to talk personally with mba students so that you can understand whether your mind set is suitable for it or not

hii.. i am Jayanti, currently pursuing my 3rd year Engineering in IT from Mumbai University.

I am planning to do MBA after my Engineering without any breaks.

But I am confused about the Types of MBA's and their Specializations.

I chose MBA as Course as I am no longer interested in Technical things.

I am good in Communication Skills and with words.

I am good in Managing things and have Leadership Qualities.

and I also have a plan of setting up my own Company/business/factory after a few years (maybe 5yrs) of Experience.

Anyone can help me out choosing the right MBA with a right Specialization as I don't have any friend or relative to guide me, PG is my only Family.

Thank You. :)

@jayanti007 You should target colleges which gives general MBA degree or offer dual specialization like IIMs, IITs and other top private B-schools. The specialization could be Marketing/Operations depending on the company you want to set up.
@yogesh098 First thing - learn as much as you can during your job. The interviewers would be least interested to know about your salary, one thing which they would be looking is your knowledge about your job(mainly work-ex related) and other things. I would suggest you to look for a job change if you've already completed 1 year in your work. Start preparing for the CAT. Go through websites like Time, CL, pagalguy and others to know what exactly you could expect from the CAT question paper. Ask students about the book they referred to for preparing. Don't worry. Thing would look difficult to you at this point of time but then you're well positioned to tackle them. Working in small company or earning less salary shouldn't become a deterrent or cause loss of confidence.
At the end, the only thing which matters most is your takeaways from the job and the learning.
@jayanti007 There are many people who get into an MBA with this idea - "I want to start my own venture"!! 😃 No offence meant but then its a fact. And the interviewers are very much aware & well acquainted with this reason for doing MBA. The thought is good, but then you'll need to back up this thought with some prep to face B-school admissions interviews. If you're going to say that reason, the questions you can expect include:
1. What business/venture?
2. There are so many people without MBA degree starting their own venture and running it successfully. So why MBA?
3. What do you expect to learn from MBA to do this?
4. Which specialization/electives in MBA? So what about the other areas which are needed to run the business. Who will manage that?

If by chance you say you have an idea for the business then the next questions can be:
1. What is the idea?
2. Why not start it now? If you're going to spend 2 years of your time doing MBA someone else might start/do it in the meantime. What will you do then?
3. What is your business model or how are you going to earn revenues?
4. How will you fund your business?

And there are some standard answers candidates give to these questions, which the interviewers are again aware of. So then you'll need to be very cautious and think well before treading into this area!!
@yogesh098 MBA should never be a compulsion forced by someone else (including parents)!! There are so many people who get into engineering/MBBS because parents ask/force them to, when in reality his/her talent and actual potential can be realized elsewhere. Doing engineering is just a crowd mentality these days. X is doing it, so I (or my son/daughter) should also go for it!! And finally they end up lamenting about it and cursing themselves (or sometimes parents!!)

Do an MBA only if YOU really want it and you feel that is what you're good at. Understand what MBA is about, how it will help you in your career etc. and think properly to decide on "Why MBA?"
