Personal Dilemma Related Queries

@Brooklyn Thanks !
@Boson the basic concepts are the same and all that you need is specific practice... for that you have enough time on your hands... so go ahead apply for XAT too

hey....this is my first post at PG...bemused to see such an innovative site...i am a final year engg student of DTU, EEE department...i'm a bit conused regarding my career.I have had an excellent academic record right through my school days to undergrad. But i'm a bit reluctant in taking the next big step in my life.I have a job offer from a decent electrical company (though it's not paying that much) and I plan to do an MBA from a decent B-school after gaining some experience (and saving some money too) in 2-3 years time.Since money is a grave issue for me and not many electrical comapines offer very lucrative jobs, i am costantly enchanted towards GATE to get through a PSU. I am pretty confident that after 3 months of rigorous hardwork, i would be able to get through some or other good PSU. So,

1. Shall I leave everything else and start preparing for GATE ?

2. Or since, I already have an offer, shall I try to focus more on campus placements and expect to get a better job (as competition there is lesser as many people are alreday placed)

and altogether change my field from electrical to non-technical?

i have also heard that growth prospects in PSU are not that good and many of my friends have a great aversion towards a PSU job, which brings me back to same question of PSU or not PSU.

@notaswot Welcome to PG! If it is not a major issue, can you share how much you will be getting in this company? If you are not comfortable sharing it here publicly, you can message me. Just click on my username which will take you to my profile and click on message.

Edit: It was my 1000th post. Never realized!! :)

@sb29 Congratulations for your 1000th post...and the company would be offering 4.3 in the first and 5.3 in the subsequent year. Since its an electrical core company, the posting would be in some remote area. So my probable plan is to get some exposure first and after that grill myself to get to good a b-school...what attracts me towards a PSU is:

1.Better Pay

2.Lesser Work

3.Bouquet of incentives...

@notaswot Hey. The salary you are being offered is not less for core sector. The only problem as you have stated is that you will be posted in a remote area. If that is the case, are you confident of cracking CAT without any coaching? If you are planning to do an MBA anyway, it won't matter whether your workex is in PSU or private sector.
@sb29 Posting is a major disadvantage with the core sectors. Actually, I think I should be able to manage, and if not, i will leave my job.And what about non-technical companies which come in scores in our college...should i try my hand there too or adopt a hawk-eye approach towards GATE. Personally, I think I am't prepared for non-tech jobs as yet, as they require silver-tongued dyanamic people whereas i am more of a swot...i think honing that skill will require some time....but if it makes a very BIG difference at the time of MBA, I can coerce myself to adapt.
@notaswot Don't join an IT company unless it is like Google or Microsoft. If some analytics company comes such as ZS, it will be a good idea to join. What kind of non-technical roles will u get in the companies which come to your campus? Otherwise stick to the company which you have got and in the mean-time, start looking at other core companies which come to your college. Personally, I will not suggest the GATE+PSU approach because it is too much effort if you have already decided that you will do an MBA later. PSU job is good for job security only. But if you are leaving anyway, why waste your energy on GATE? Rather spend it on something worthwhile.
@sb29 ZS came and went...i was so much engulfed in this confusion that I wasn't able to clear the wriiten test. I was so much confused that I didn't apply for Towers Watson and Accenture Consulting.Besides, companies like Geiper,Fractal and Grail research might come to our college and some KPOs like EVS are also expected to come. But considering my very poor non-tech resume' , I am a bit skeptical here. And the only reason, I would like to go for a PSU is that they pay better, so I would be able to save more. Its clearly a dilemma between better initial money and better mba prospects.
@notaswot
Hello mate,

I am your academic cousin....NSIT 4th year...All these non-tech firms have whizzed past me too. Though I would admit that I haven't really been serious towards the placement season but I guess I'll have to roll up my sleeves now......Just out of curiosity, when do you expect Grail, fractal, EVS on campus?

Preparing for GATE is a better option(assuming you directly land up in a PSU) because
1. Job Safety.
2. Ample time for preparation.
3. Good money at least in the start.
4. Growth concerns- After you are done with all your preparations, assuming you have run out of patience for CAT, make a switch.
5. Coaching issues- Get an on-line coaching.Coaching is not a make and mar factor. Particularly for you being from a good college I don't see any big issues even if you skip coaching. Better, solve some previous CAT papers with time limits and you will get an idea where do you stand regarding coaching needs.
6. Career plan- You would be appearing for next CAT. You have ample time on your hands. Prepare for GATE first. Later for CAT.

OR

7. GATE scorecard is valid for 2 years. Get a good score, don't join job and prepare for CAT.

OR

If you are feeling burnout issues. Simply go for CAT. Your college would be ending in some mid-2013. Go into MBA as a fresher.
@notaswot I just realized that you must have entered the final year few months back. My mistake. I was, for some strange reason, thinking that you passed out this year. As @icecool11 suggested, had I been in your place, I wouldn't be hunting for a PSU job now. I would start preparing for CAT 2013 and try my luck as a fresher. You already have a job. So, you are not under too much pressure. Just focus on CAT and crack it next year. It is always good to do an MBA with some years of experience. But if you are getting a top institute, you should take it. That's what I did so many years back. I was in a similar situation as you. So, I am telling this by experience.

Hello @adityaknsit we are on the same boat...and regarding these companies, I don't have a specific date of their campus drives... might probably in the dec or jan..

@icecool11 thanks a lot for this. I am more inclined towards joining a PSU because of the aforementioned factors. But would a PSU experience be comparable to that of a consulting/KPO/finance company at the time of MBA ? And what if there is a bond system in PSU, won't it just defer my MBA dreams by some more years?

And since I don't want to burgeon the burden of my studies on my parents, I can't consider doing an MBA w/o job experience. So I have to choose either GATE or any non-technical firm.

@sb29 Yeah, thats what my strategy is. But i seriously want a better paying job as of now. But what i want to know is whether coming from core technical sector hinders your chances to do an MBA, or both the technical and non-technical guys are assessed on the same scale? Might not be next year but CAT 2014 is definately on my cards.
@DN2686 thank u sir!! But i just don't know how i would justify myself......coz it gets very difficult for u to convince the panel dat u derserve a seat in d institute when u hvn't wrked after engineering !

I have been short listed for MHRD commonwealth scholarship scheme to do MS in UK..They have called for interview. What do they expect me to know??does anyone have any idea..please help me out

i was the school topper at the one of best college at small town from hindi medium. After 10th,when i managed very good percentage ,i was just very relaxed during 11th,12th ,still i managed average percentage above 70 from u.p. board. Now next come to what after 12th,following the trend i joined coaching in FIITJEE after 3-4 months i got seriously sicked and some confidence related reasons i quit the studies and joined the next year again coaching and managed good rank in UPSEE and AIEEE.Got admission in top 10 college in UPTU.Now i don`t want to do a job at this with very low confidence and due to previous backdrop of studies i just loose faith in myself and still belive that i can`t do anything.........inspite of this i want to do an mba......Is my decision is correct ?????and with this profile can i managed to top 30 b-school ????

@Dizzy_aussies If acads is the factor which is stopping you or raising concerns in your mind about doing MBA, then nothing to worry. There are many with average acads (70+) who make it to one of the top 30 B-schools in the country. You can specifically look out for those institutes which give lesser weightage to acads.

Now, if confidence & self belief is the factor which is stopping you, then you need to seriously think on "Why MBA?" (even in former case). Not wanting to go a job (that too because of lack of self belief!) does not qualify as reason to do MBA. What do you look to gain from an MBA? Where do you see yourself 5yrs later? What would you like to do as a job for a living? And most important, if you don't have the confidence and self belief, you're going to find it very tough to get through the admission process of the top 30 B-schools!! You need to have at least a bit of belief in your skills and knowledge & the rest can be developed in the course of 2yrs of MBA. I can vouch for that myself!!

Is it possible to get admission to a Top tier 20-30 bschool with a 2 year gap and profile as follows :

10th : 71%
12th : 64%
grad : 58.5% (BCA)
work exp : no
has people converted top bschool calls with such a profile in recent years...
If NOT then what are the possible ways of building up a career after such a loss...
