@yogesh098 MBA should never be a compulsion forced by someone else (including parents)!! There are so many people who get into engineering/MBBS because parents ask/force them to, when in reality his/her talent and actual potential can be realized elsewhere. Doing engineering is just a crowd mentality these days. X is doing it, so I (or my son/daughter) should also go for it!! And finally they end up lamenting about it and cursing themselves (or sometimes parents!!)Do an MBA only if YOU really want it and you feel that is what you're good at. Understand what MBA is about, how it will help you in your career etc. and think properly to decide on "Why MBA?"
Correct words. But parents started giving me some examples. They said that MBA would give me good salary.
@yogesh098 Not from all B-schools, and not for everyone who does an MBA. That is a wrong notion about MBA, at least in India!

But then considering your current salary of 7k, YES, it will definitely be a decent boost in your salary, provided you do your MBA from one of the top 40-50 institutes in the country. But then that should never be the reason to do an MBA. At least not the only reason!!

That's why i am totally confused. I wanna learn a lot and being an engineer with technical stuff, i am thinking of mba with IT Stream. How is it? Is it good? I've seen all go for marketing, finance or etc. None of them is interested in MBA IT.

I want to add more, I have only 5 months of experience till now. So, should i wait ?
@yogesh098 Yes if you're looking forward to an MBA in IT then your current work exp will definitely be helpful. What you're going to learn in MBA will be concepts like Data Warehousing, Data Mining, Networking, Requirements Gathering, Use Case diagrams, Waterfall Model, ERP etc. and many of those things you've probably touched upon in your grad or will be using/doing in your IT work exp. So then work exp will be very important because you're actually learning it live by doing it rather than mugging it up theoretically!!

Thank You :)

What is the difference in specifications IT, Systems, Operations?
@yogesh098 IT & Systems are used interchangeably. Operations is about Supply Chain Management (rather its the other way round, Operations is part of SCM!), Capacity Planning, Inventory Management, Scheduling, Processes and process control and many other aspects.

You can read through the below threads to understand better about MBA & specializations. Read the first posts in all of them and you'll get a fair idea of what each of them is about.

@ajaygovindg

Thanks for ur reply. :)

but the idea of starting my own venture is with me only. i wont disclose it to any of the interviewers.

I will just say that, i am from the IT sector but have interest in the management sector as well. so to wings to my passion of management, i m doing mba which will also give an edge to my career. :)

Does it count as work experience if I work as a contract employee? I am yet to be taken on the permanent rolls and I believe, I would have my entire work experience working as a contract employee( for the next one year)? Do they, in anyway pose a problem?
@sriramss Usually almost all institutes say "Any full-time experience after graduation" where you're drawing a monthly salary and on the rolls of the company. I'm not sure if contract work exp will be counted under that because you're not in the rolls of the company.

Dilemma - I've got a considerable amount of that in me right now...

About me.
1oth - 85%.
Doing my 12th.. And I feel I'll be getting around 60%.. Btw I am a science stream stud..
Bad score awaits me.. Its b'coz of some reason that my prep hasnt been fine and wont get better... In short - its a medical issue, i've lost a year in my life - should be in college right now, I aint willing to lose yet another year in hope of doing better in 12th.. but if you're suggest that to me - will consider...

I know my performance in ug would get better.. which is probably gonna be BBM( Is that a good choice be4 mba? ).

So... I have time with me be4 MBA...

People kind enough here to spare some of their time for me...?
Would like to know...
1.Top bschools wont take me... excluding a few who wouldnt mind past acads much? Could you name a few for me? - I am interested in hr.. marketing..

2.Since I've got bad acads, how to make my profile look better? Trying things out in events? Could you give me a few suggestions? how about working for part time in some ngo whilst doing my ug? anything that I can do during my ug that could make my profile look better?

Please do reply... Quite worried... I dont wanna let my worries worsen my performance...

Thank you so much.

It is a full time job and I do feature on the company rolls and can get salary slips from the comapny as well.
@sriramss Then definitely it will be given due credit. But then a work exp of around 1 year will not add a big boost in your profile. But then yeah some credit will be given for the time you've spent and the learning you must have got.

I would have a work exp. of 18 months by the time I get into a B-School. 1 1/2 years of exp will make some difference?
@sriramss More the work exp more the credit.

Can I be suggested on ways to improve my profile(anything rather than in academics) since I've got time with me...? Any Puys...? Give me a lil of your time... Your suggestions & guidance - are gonna be really helpful for me...
@Xyzlo Hey!! Welcome to PG! It is good to see someone so young think so seriously about his career. And I feel really old talking to you. :)

Why have you already given up hope for your 12th std scores? You still have time. Give it your best shot. Why don't you focus on 2-3 subjects which you are confident in and score very high in those subjects so that it takes your average higher? (Don't neglect the others though)

Why do you want to do BBM? Just because it sounds the same as MBA? Don't think that a bachelors in management will have more preference in MBA admissions. Why don't you study something which is related to management? That will open up more options for you in future. Why don't you study some traditional stream such a commerce, economics, psychology, statistics, computer science etc? These will leave you with more options after you graduate (in case you change your mind about MBA).

Most people struggle to choose a specialization even when they are in 2nd year of MBA, and you have already chosen yours :)

Keep an open mind to what life has to offer to you. It may so happen that you figure out your interest lies elsewhere. That is perfectly all right. Right now your plans seems to be focused on MBA. At this age, keep your options open. Explore new stuff and see what you truly like.

More importantly, focus on your 12th boards right now. MBA can wait :)

All the best!

Thank you for responding... soft and informative... :)

Hmm.. havent given up yet.. wasnt in a good mood while posting.. it'll be better than what i had posted...

Been sitting home for nearly 2 years now(honestly.. had a hard time.. I wont forget this period in my life.. and the people who have been with me through this phase)... been speculating alot about my career... I've narrowed down to here.. I've expressed that my interest lies in hr.. exploring it a lot more..I do like marketing as well.. exploring.. and my mind is still open.. but more info on this could help me... :)

I would like to know on ways to improve my profile... so as as to improve my chances of getting in top bschools... if I could get some answer specific to this.. I'd be a lot more clear... could you clear this alone...??? and even on improving my chances of placement... :)

Also been speculating a number of UG's - their syllabuses... BBM does impress me.. But yeah I may change my ug.. I've got time with me..

Actually I am here in PG to explore MBA alot more... surfing through threads...:)

@sb29 ... sorry missed this one.. so as to make sure you're notified... :)

I have 2 years IT exp as a developer in TCS...Now I am working in Public Sector Bank as probationary officer since July...Most probably I will be doing MBA dis year..what kind of profiles will I get after MBA? Will this exp as PO hamper my selection in IT companies...??I am more interested in Finance companies but I dont know if my profile is suited for good finance companies..so,In case I have to return to IT..will it hamper my chances???

@Xyzlo Academics is the most important part of the profile. Focus on that. Apart from that take some amount of interest in extracurricular activities in college. Also work with some NGO/social organization. Not only will it add value to your profile, but also be good for the society.
