Personal Dilemma Related Queries

@sb29 hmmm.. thanks.. :)
@katty14 Working as a PO will not hamper your chances. Although post MBA Finance profiles are completely different, your experience in banking industry may give you a slight edge over others. And since you have 2 years IT work exp you can leverage that also and stand a good chance in IT firms also.

For core Finance profiles, you will have to look at adding more value in your profile through some certifications offered by CFA, NCFM, FLIP etc., certificate courses/programs etc. Basically something which will show a third person who doesn't know you other than through your resume, the interviewer (for placements after MBA), that you have some sound finance knowledge. This can be done now, while doing MBA or after that depending on your preference. Accordingly you can move into Finance profiles. Some of them like CFA are bit costly so you may want to do it after MBA and get into related profiles within 2 years after doing your MBA.

does a CGL job count as work experience for doing mba

@ajaygovind

@sb29 @icecool11 Sir few months back you suggested for the same dilemma, I am facing now..

I actually joined this JTEKT corp but again the situation is same.

I got suggestion from ajay sir on other thread but as this thread seems more active I would like a few more suggestions.

I am presently working in an Japanese automobile ancillary MNC, basically dealing with Electronic power steering system. JTEKT Corp. and it is world leader in its segment. I am in sales and marketing Dept. working here from past 6 months.. And will be promoted as executive in Dec.

Joined this comely thinking it might put me on edge while giving b school interviews, as few come from sales and marketing background although Pay package is pathetic here. (2.4lpa)

Being a B2B supplier company , the departmental work is more of sales and documentation rather than working on strategies or market study. (all strategies building, market study, future plans etc are done in JAPAN headquarter and we get backed food). I must say the work is not that much good as I thought it would be in sales and marketing dept.

My profile

10th- 87%

12th- 85%

Btech 창€“ 6.3 (from IIIT Jabalpur ---Indian Institute of information technology )

Loads of extracurricular and sports national level certificates

Now the problem is I have got joining in TCS in EIS dept on 28th feb as assistant system engineer.(3.16lkh per annum L )

This yr I gave cat, although its impossible to judge percentile but I am expecting a descent one. Aimcats ranks wer between 200 to 1000 AIR.

My target b schools- IIMs FMS MDI SPjain XL

I am in dilemma whether I should leave this job and join TCS or not.

I am not liking this job at all. The culture here is pathetic, people here are worst. Afterall this is a supplier company.

Please any one can guide me what should I do?

Cant live with this job for 1.5 yrs more (if I don창€™t get into a bschool dis session)

Cant go in TCS( the edge I am thinking of being in a sales and marketing will be lost and I would b standing among herd of IT ppl coveting a seat in bschool)

I can furnish more about the quality of work here if asked.. its not that good, as you can see the pay package is pathetic.

Hi All,

This one is straight from my heart… I am very sorry for the long post…but please do provide your valuable suggestions.

I am an engg. Graduate 2010 passout working in one of the top 2 IT companies of India from past 21 months. I am very much frustrated and have made up my mind to quit this job . In fact I had decided to quit the job in year 2011 itself. But just because of social pressure I have somehow dragged this for so long. But I can't take this anymore now.
There are a lots of things in my mind and I am very confused.

I don't want to be in a corporate world, in fact, I never wanted to be in the corporate world right since my college days for a number of reasons.
I want a job that is challenging as well as I want to take out time for my family and for myself as well. I have never longed for high pay packages because all I want is mental peace…
Now, with the sole aim of getting out from this job I have tried my hands in number of exams such as CAT, SSC-CGL, IBPS-PO and some PSU's in the past year. I have cleared SSC and IBPS-PO but I am not going for ssc as my marks are poor in that. I will certainly go for IBPS-PO interview if I get a call because it might get me the dream job – close to family, near my hometown ,a respectable govt. job. . CAT result is pending but I am not hoping for a good percentile as I didn't prepare that well for exam. Also there is not enough motivation to go for CAT because I am scared I will again land up in a multinational company in the corporate jungle.

Because my aim is to get a good govt. job that too near my hometown, I have decided to study for GATE exam for full time next year and get into a good PSU. Even if don't make it into the PSUs , I hope to get admission for m.tech and then I can get a job as an engg. College lecturer.
My problem is how I will justify that 1 year gap that is about to be created once I leave the job. Also, I have to answer to a lot of people back home as to why I have left the job. My friends tell me to stay here only or to switch in another so called software company. They also tell me if I stay here for another 2-3 years I might go to onsite and can earn huge bucks. But, as I said , that's not my option. I will never be happy even if I become the next CEO of my present company. I have seen my both the parents working as govt. servants and I would like to be just like them.
I don't know how can one be so happy in getting up early in the morning and come to do an outsourced work for a foreign client …I fail to understand how can one be satisfied doing that. Is it just because of money that motivates these people? Whatever it is- I am very much clear in my mind that this job is not my cup of tea.

Friends, please suggest a way out for me. I would really be very grateful if someone can the guiding light for me and suggest an appropriate plan for my career.

P.S.:- Please don't suggest me to continue the job as I have already made up my mind and I will resign next month. Please suggest a way forward !
Thanks in advance :)

Take a leap of faith on yourself. Prepare well for GATE. Crack it. MTech/PSU. If PSU Best. If MTech. Teach somewhere near your hometown in CG.
Justification for 1 year gap? Prepared for GATE. Its not a big deal.

Also IBPS wont take you to your home although its govt job.

Other option is to crack SSC for a govt +near home job.
All the best.
@icecool11 Thank you so much sir :)

Hi guys,

New here, but this thread name pretty much sums up my situation, and a little advice would really go a long way.
Yup, I'm yet another one of those Engineering grads with MBA aspirations. I'm a 2012 passout and I've given (and will be giving a few more of) the MBA entrance exams this year, but none too seriously as I'd much rather have some work experience before doing an MBA. I was recruited by TCS on campus and only recently got my joining date. (early Feb). In the meantime, I took up a job at an IT book publishing house, and now hold a pretty good post here. I'm working with a team and on multiple projects simultaneously, and also have people working under me. So now I'm confused on whether to quit this one and take up TCS's offer, or stick around here. I did my B.E in computers, but really not too keen on programming ( although if need be, I could live with it) I'm interested in tech and IT in general, but not so much on hardcore coding per se.
I intend giving the CAT a serious shot this year (2013), so from an MBA admissions perspective, which do you guys reckon would be a better decision? A smaller, less known company but with a decent job-profile and growth prospects or a well-known one albeit where its possible I'd just be yet another face in the crowd and in all likelihood on the bench for the better part of the next year.
Also, and I know this is probably off-topic, does anyone have any information on the Masters in Information Systems Management (MSISM) program offered by some colleges in USA? How would you rate that vis a vis an MBA from a top 30 college in India?

Thanks for reading my essay and I'd be grateful for any advice anyone may have. :)
@joel2502 My personal opinion is, if the money is decent, stay in the publishing industry. Your profile will stand out in the applicant pool. But don't expect to be considered for lateral offers as I don't think any publishing house comes for recruitment at top business schools.

If you get into a top 10 institute in India, it is a good idea to stay back. Otherwise education abroad will be better.
@sb29 Thanks so much! The money is decent, but a little less as compared to TCS. However money isn't really a priority right now. And I'm not too worried about getting lateral offers. Like I said, this is just to help me gain some experience till I get into an MBA (or the MSISM) program. Does the company you've worked for have an impact on your profile? ie, would a school prefer a person from a big name company rather than one thats relatively unknown?
@joel2502 Stay with publishing house. IT bugs are crawling all around. A different profile and more management intensive job is better. Plus you are not much into hardcore coding. And prospects are also better in publishing house.

This is true both for job and even if you later aspire for MBA.

@joel2502 Not really. They look for diversity. Your publishing house experience will help you in that. But, I am not sure if it will help in case you decide to pursue IS. Not very familiar with the field.
@icecool11 and @sb29 Cheers guys. thanks SO much for your advice. It's really helped.
@shubhba
my opinion is that you should (in case you;ve an option) join the job which you'd love to have and not one which you think MBA interviewers would love you to be in (or atleast you think that). Join TCS if you feel you'd like it more. There is no 2 way about it.
Also there is no guarantee that you would get your dream college (luck is a big factor). It's better to switch now when you get an opportunity.
Also all this edge thing is just our perception. You need to do well in interview- IT or non IT is just a small part of whole thing.
Lastly, you can anyday frame a good explanation for B-school interviews to explain the switch. Inside MBA (in job interviews) - don't think about it now. Too early for that.

To summarize- Join TCS
@shubhba Sorry for the late response. I have a standard reply of asking people not to join the IT giants as there are already so many candidates from these companies. You rightly point out that you currently have an 'edge'. However, considering that your work environment is not that great, you should do whatever gives you peace of mind.

Why don't you try to get into companies like idea7 (auto sales consulting companies).

Hey Puys,
Here's my dilemma

First my profile

1. Acads ( x -93% X11- 94.5% b.tech (EEE)- CGPA 7.14)
2. Work experience of 1.5 years in a leading switch gear manufacturing company
Responsible for marketing and sales team , met deadlines and improved sale of a product by 200%

3. Currently pursuing M.tech at IIT Bombay ( in an off beat branch "Technology and Development") deals with socio technical aspects but the placements are not great atall.

4.Extra curricular -decent

5.GMAT -700

My dilemma-
Should I finish my degree at IITB and apply for an MBA? will an off beat branch add any credit to my application? the branch deals with uplifttment in rural areas and working with NGO's

Or should I give GATE again and aim for PSU's /join some other job and gain 2 more years of experience before I apply?

Please suggest
@karthik09 Nice profile. I think you have a chance of getting through without any further change to your profile. Also, your profile is well suited for a PhD in business abroad in case your are interested.

Forward your resume to people working in TCS/Wipro/infosys .. these companies are offering role for S/W engineers to B.Sc grads as well! 😃

Till then, you can join the job you are getting in convergys but for sure, do not stay for log here and keep searching better jobs!

No need to worry for MBA as no job is considered to be worthless by B-Schools!

Hope this helps!

PS: Also, send your updated resume to me!
@visionIIM-ACL sir pls message me your mail id..:)
