@Revenous Don't get demotivated! You probably attempted CAT just once. Correct me If I'm wrong. There are people who attempt 4 & 5 times!!! So don't lose hope. If you want to get into a job by the time you attempt CAT again next year, try for some jobs through Naukri, Monster etc. or some contacts you may have (seniors, friends etc.)

First decide on whether you're serious about CAT & MBA. Think on "Why MBA" seriously. If the reason is so weak that you lose hope and switch to government jobs/exams so fast, then no point in doing MBA. No offence meant, but do think seriously on these aspects before you take the plunge again (if you're planning to!)

Hello,
I am currently a student of chemical engineering and in my prefinal year .I am confused regarding my future .....my academic record is not that great
Ssc:71.69%
HSC:58.96%
BE:1st sem textile :67%
and then i took a change of dept. and was given a choice of civil and chemical and have thus ended up taking chemical .......well ofcourse without any future thought ......
....
am not at all clear as to what should i do next ....
A)go for MBA: but marks would then not support me ......would i be able to enter any A grade b school?
B)should i go for ME : what are the future prospects?
C)i am bit carried by the advertisement industry and would want to do an MBA in advertisement ........am aware of mica but don't know if i could enter it with my academic records.......
@Revenous Firstly why only an IT job? There are so many other jobs that are there up for grabs. Agreed the pay would be less, but it wouldn't (or rather it shouldn't) matter that much for you because your end goal is to do an MBA. So then try for some other kind of jobs also like Sales, Supplier Management etc. Check in Naukri, Monster etc. and there are so many one can see. Why only an IT job? And moreover some other kind of job will give you an advantage also compared to an IT job, in B-School admission interviews.
@dip.u The choice between MBA & ME is something you'll have to decide for yourself. I you want to get into a technical career track then ME is the way forward, and if you're interested in non-technical/business side of an organization then go for MBA. Marks would be problem in getting admission for ME & MBA. So the career track should not depend on that, rather your interest.

Regarding MICA it would be better if you check out the MICA thread at http://www.pagalguy.com/discussions/mica-ahmedabad-official-discussion-forum-micat-2013-25084777/3598503and ask seniors there about weightage for acads and chances of getting admission call.
@ajaygovindg thank you

Preface: We live in a world where job satisfaction together with financial fulfillment is a luxury to have. And I am entangled in a similar kind of dilemma. I am thinking of leaving my well-paying job to satisfy my writer's itch. To know more, read on.

Section 1:

Puys,

As an introduction, I would say I am your just-another-routine-software-guy: engineering graduate from a not-so-known state level engineering college, working in a big Indian 'IT giant' for the last 2 years, and doing the same age old repetitive testing and support tasks (which non-IT guys confuse as niche or high-end technological). In short, there is nothing extraordinary about my profile and, for the sake of your imagination, I can assume the face of anybody you know in IT.

After 2 years of mundane projects, amidst long and annoying team meetings, and countless sulking sessions over coffee with friends, a truth dawned upon me and took the form of a Halo; that I don't like the job which I was doing right now. And you cannot expect to excel in a job that you don't like. I read someone giving Gyan on PagalGuy that if you wake up in the morning and don't feel motivated enough to go to your office, there is something fundamentally wrong with the kind of job that you are doing. I guess this line pretty much describes the condition that I am in.

'Then, what do you like?', I can hear you asking. Well, I like to read and write. A lot. I was the student editor of our school magazine in classes 11th and 12th . I was a modest reader at that time and the skill came naturally to me. But after school, I felt a mysterious drive to follow the herd-mentality (which loosely translates to 'opting for engineering') and I eventually landed into an isolated cubicle of an IT company.

I love to read- mostly fiction- and I can lock myself in a room and spend any number of hours in the company of books. My romance with books started in college final year when I started reading Indian 'chick lit', and it gradually converted me into an avid reader. But the real turning point came when in March'12, I accidentally laid my hands on 'Midnight's Children' by Salman Rushdie and the prose sucked me in. I became hooked and within a matter of around 8 months, I had finished some 25+ books (thanks Flipkart). Writers like J.M. Coetzee, David Mitchell and Haruki Murakami occupied the top slots of my favorite writers list and, unknowingly, I myself started to fantasize about becoming a big writer one day ('fantasize' being the keyword here).

I am also an occasional blogger too (I have to use the word 'occasional' courtesy my busy project schedule) and my blog on the company's internal blogspace is being followed and appreciated by many ('widespread acclaim' would be too big a phrase). I have written a few short stories and the praises by anonymous people have lulled me into believing that I can write fiction. And it wouldn't be an understatement if I say reading and writing has become my passion.

After some 3-4 months of oscillating between 'job safety and financial security' and 'following my passion', I am seriously considering giving the latter one a try. That is to say, I am in a mood to leave IT altogether and explore prospects of a job in literary world. And this is the point of this post as I have a very foggy idea of the sector.

Section 2:

Note: In case you are coming here through section 1 and still reading further, I appreciate your patience.

Here are my questions:

1. What kind of people do publishing houses take? Do they remain restricted to English or journalism graduates? Or would they be ready to put their faith in someone from an engineering/IT background?

2. Can someone give me an idea how difficult it is to get a job there. And what kind of salary can I expect. Right now I am earning around 28k and I know I cannot expect this much in any publishing house given that I would be a fresher there. But would it be at least sufficient enough to sustain myself during the initial days of struggle?

3. What are the growth prospects if I make this switch? Where can I expect to be after 5 years down the line? I am thinking long term here.

4. How about pursuing a Masters in creative writing? I have heard about big universities abroad (University of East Anglia, etc), but they would be very costly. Any idea about loans and scholarships that would come handy? Or any good option in India itself for the same?

If you or any of your friends/relatives are in such a job, I would appreciate if you can come up with inputs or suggestions. Any piece of information is valuable to me, be it the job profile, the working culture or just anything. So, please don't hesitate in pouring in with your replies.

Of course, I can always review my decision and switch back to IT if I find literary sector not rewarding in the long run. But right now, this writer's itch is overpowering everything else and I am serious about taking a break from my current job and do something that I always wanted to do. Don't they say, you have only one life (Zindagi naa milegi dobara).

P.S.-- The length of this post can give you an idea how big a writer's itch I have .

Thanks,
ApunBolaCAT
Hi, I am having 2+ years work experience in IT-Telecom domain and planning to go for an MBA.
However, I am a bit confused about which MBA to go for--regular MBA or executive MBA.
If I start preparing now then at best I will be a part of 2014 batch, that means at that point of time I will be having an experience of 3+ years.Preparing for a regular MBA has a different approach then preparing for an executive MBA.Also my experience of over 3 years may get me few negative points in case of regular MBA.Kindly suggest what suits me better.
@esubcef I would suggest that you go for 1 year MBA (at ISB, GLIM) etc either now or after couple of more years. Also, if money is not a constraint, try abroad.

If you are looking for a quality work-ex go for Accenture
and if you want to take it as preparation time with full pay-scale go for TCS

@akash_goel i too agree with @tiwarishiva go for accenture if you want to work..my friends who got placed in TCS are not even going to office as they have no project, trust me it may sound enticing at first that you will get a lot of time but being on-bench will affect you career in the long run ..

I am currently in engineering final year. Interested in finance. Going to write CFA level 1 in june . Are there any certifications in finance which I can get in 1-2 months so that they will be useful for Interviews for B-Schools in march . How is NCFM by NSE ?

@tiwarishiva how can u comment on two hugely reputed IT giants work culture so easily, I am sure u r in IT field too wid couple of yrs work exp, but I do not agree with u. I do not belong to any of the companies mentioned here. the thing is that, we can not handle job n preparation, we can not do multitasking, thats why we want to take up a job, where we can surf PG all day, n may b seat on bench fr 3 mnths and prepare for CAT, question urself...r we doing good??? to ourself? to our employers??

managers are supposed to multitasking n after our MBA we have to work for 14hrs for sure. I will only suggest u, plz do not try to be oppurtunist(may b the word is wrong), take it as a challenge. if u fail then try again, but dont cheat

Rambling about is never good!! You leave a lot of holes in argument which can be attacked. Anyway the guy just mentioned the situation that is prevailing in TCS with a certain angle which might be beneficial to some. Whether you are on bench in TCS or not is not in your control. Market forces determining business to TCS is not in their control itself. So where does the question of "cheating" comes? Everybody has different priorities in life. Take those into account as well the situation that you are likely to encounter in the job. Weigh your options in this context and take a decision. Cheating and all such ethical high stands are irrelevant.

Cheers! Best of luck!
@torqtech i am not arguing. may b the person, who i replied is way more senior to me,in experince, in degrees n so on. I gave my personal opinions. everyone has their own problems and its up to them how they r going to face them.
@akash_goel I would recommend go for the work profile which gives you better options for learning in terms of nature of work!! Your future aspiration of joining PSU or writing CAT (which again I have to admit is slightly confusing, since you seem to not have a fixed idea in mind on where you want to be!), is in no way related to both the job offers in hand. So it does not matter where you join as it is only a way to not remain idle at the same time get the benefit of having a work exp when sitting for B-School admission interviews!!

Now as far as better work profile is concerned, its IT job and usually the job/training allocations are random and you don't have any control over it. TCS is a leading IT giant and Accenture is more known for consulting (although you probably have got an IT profile) and both have a brand value in their own terms. In terms of work culture also both are equally good. So the only option remains to go where location is more favorable and where there are lesser friends (if you want to spare time to spend for preparation)!!! I know its an absurd logic but then if you're very sure about CAT and MBA you'll need to devote some dedicated time for it, and with friends hanging around it is not going to happen!!!

It was not a comment. I said it because it has some base.
