Personal Dilemma Related Queries

Hi! I'm in a dilemma and need your opinion as per my career perspective.

My profile-

BBM - 55%
12th - 40%
10th - 61%
Work Ex - 2years 10 months in HR domain. (*quit job as i wanted to do my masters).

I've written my CAT/MAT. Recently, I've got my MAT results and have got a reasonable score (composite score = 587). Also, applied for XAT and would be writing it ASAP.

P.S.- I'm a resident of Bangalore and was looking to apply for good b-schools around here. However, i was also keen in applying outside bangalore but due to funding issues i would prefer studying in Bangalore.

a. Please let me know what best can I do from what I've got? I don't mind if your suggestions/comments are blunt; I would be glad to hear it from you. :)

b. It would be of great help which are the best colleges in/outside of Bangalore which i can apply with my score.

Thanks a ton!
Cheers :)
@stellarPG Myself and @torqtech don't fall in the category of "management" team!! 😛

visionIIM-ACL & grondmaster are also not PG employees but moderators here based on their activity in the forums, helping nature, objective approach etc. :mg:

Coming to your query you can:
1. Try for some job in startups by some acquaintance, relative, senior etc. rather than those high paying corporate jobs. You'll also learn/understand a lot.
2. Contributing to an NGO
3. Try for some short internships, live projects etc. Try searching in letmeknow.in & letsintern.com or else try through your contacts.
4. Look for some certifications in your area of interest in MBA. Search the list pagalguy.com/forums/career-discussions/certificati... to see if anything interests you, do DETAILED research and then take up any of interest. If you're not sure of which area you want to be in this option is NOT recommended. Randomly doing some certification for the sake of doing it & for brownie point in resume will not help.
5. Pursue some passion, hobby etc. you may have. Spend some time for yourself. This again is NOT recommended if you cannot speak confidently about it & answer the many questions that may arise in interviews.

You may want to do multiple things from among the above, rather than doing just 1, to keep yourself occupied and also to have something to be not said as idle.

Dilemma - Am very sure of doing an MBA in the batch 2013-2015. Since, most programme starts from April-May. I'll have a gap of almost 10 months if i stay idle till then. I have applied to different job portals but the profiles & brands offered is not good at all. It'll be great if anyone can help me know how should i utilise the pre-mba months productively.
This will be applicable to you during your PIs only.

Firstly, even if you start working tomorrow, you'll still have a 4 month gap. Be ready to justify it. Ensure that the answer you give is strong enough. The gist of it can be the truthful answer, that you wanted to prepare for the competitive exams, but it has to justify that the gap was needed.

Secondly, it may not be possible to get a fulltime role for just 4-5 months. I'd recommend joining a project based role in the field you want to work in after your MBA. Eg for marketing, join an agency.

You can also join an NGO and volunteer your time. Whether it adds any value to your CV is something people can debate on, but it will certainly help you on a personal level. TFI, CRY, Akanksha and others across the country are examples.

You can also take this time out - and if you have some savings - then go on a countrywide tour. This need not be just a holiday, but also a knowledge trip. And it can be as long as you want it to be.

Doing certificate programs may be helpful, but not too interesting, and certainly not enough to justify the gap.

No matter what you do, be ready to be asked about the gap, and how you answer them and justify it is important. Draft your answers carefully, but truthfully.
@ashishakshat29 For institutes under MAT refer the MAT discussions thread at http://www.pagalguy.com/discussions/2012-2013-good-mat-business-schools-25082183

For XAT institutes, quite frankly or bluntly like you said, I'm not sure of your chances considering your not so good acads. Maybe you can check XAT associate institutes at http://www.xatonline.net.in/associate.aspx (Click on Member Institutes || Institutes using XAT Score at bottom), filter out the institutes at Bangalore and then check out their information separately to decide if you want to apply there or not.

I believe @grondmaster has already responded comprehensively .. nothing much left for me to add !

I will just respond to the last line... 😃

This is not a sad story.. if you will feel so, you will not be able to justify confidently in interview... you took a decision and now you have to back it... you have to show confidence in the decision you took and only then you can convince interview panel! 😃

Also, need not worry as there have been people in past who took a break of 6-10 months for MBA prep after a job of 1.5-2 years and have been able to convert calls from top IIMs and other leading B-Schools!

You need to perform well in GDPI and this thing shall not matter much if you can reflect the confidence and back your decision infront of panel!

Remember, panelists like people who can take decisions as an MBA and back those decisions and not run away in hard times .. :)

Cheers and All the best!
@stellarPG As @ajaygovindg Sir said, I'm nowhere near the legends that you have put me up with. I'm truly humbled by the gesture.

Well I'll answer it from a very general perspective which might not address your query per se but this is what I think is more relevant to the situation.

Since you are sure of joining MBA this year, I'm assuming you will be looking at a wide range of colleges for all types of scenarios arising out of varying results of your exams. So what this gap effectively means for you is that you will have to justify it confidently in an interview. If you pull this off as planned then you won't have to consider about the time between PI and your joining an MBA programme. Your confidence in justifying this 4 months gap will also decide where you get to do your MBA from.

Now, any time taken off specifically for preparations is not looked upon in a very positive manner because there are people who manage preparations along with a pretty hectic job. But then everybody is different and you have to justify you needed that time and also you have done full justice by giving your best and also your results are showing that. Any activity carried out during this time apart from studies which show you matured as an individual and discovered yourself will wipe out any negative attached to the scenario. So think long and hard about this and prepare yourself to answer questions about this in interviews in an extremely positive and confident manner and I'm sure you will make it to a dream college this year.

Best of luck!

hey puys,,Can anyone plz clear this thingwhat type of marketing profile in placement a fresher gets with no work experience opting for MBA marketing in top 15 colleges ????I had read somewhere that freshers no matter from watsoever college they get low profile jobs in marketing initially,is it so???????plzz seniors reply
Yes its true. Even marketing people recruited from even IIMs are made to work initially in shops(IN case of Pantaloons at least). It is done to make sure you understand the company at grass root levels.

Hi Puys,

My query is short and simple. I have worked in IT sector for 2 years. Want to prepare for IAS but don't want to take drop. I have following options-
1. Bank PO- Selected in UCO Bank.
2. Some MBA college in Delhi
3. IT Job in Delhi with weekend classes.
4. SSC.
Kindly suggest the best option with pros and cons.
I specially want to ask that is it possible to prepare for IAS as bank PO or with MBA?

@icecool11 SSC is the best option if u r solely devoted for IAS . but if u want to have a plan B just incase then good MBA colleges in Delhi like FMS MBE MFC wou;d be a good idea......as far as bank po ios concerned posting is in far flung areas so u have to rely on the postal coaching ............but then it itself is a sound plan B.

Hi,

I am currently working in Cisco and will be joining Family Business from Feb 2013.

I would like to get some advise on MBA career.

1. Attempted cat 2012 - not much hope.
2. 10 - 91.6 %
12 - 84.4 %
College Vit - Mech Eng - 8.8 CGPA
pass out - 2011
3. Goals to clear CAT 2013.

Background on business - The Business is growing as of now and it is a private limited company. My dad and his friend are in partnership and now when I go I would be ramping up to take all the responsibilities of my father. The company is a manufacturing company and we are sole manufacturers of Plate type heat exchanger who manufactures in India except the Big Shots who cater large market share. We have currently invested in a technology that will help in manufacturing some Vital Parts in India rather than importing those. Hence huge saving on this individual part. There is a lot to learn as all the solution we provide are solution based and hence lot of manufacturing practical things have to learnt to take over the responsibility.

My Dilemma -

How good is pursuing MBA Full time in 2013? If I go for full time ( after getting good percentile ), is it worth giving up for 2 years compared to the improvement that can be made at home ?

How Good is Part time MBA ?

Should I start pursuing part time now ? or wait for another attempt and try for Full time?

If I attempt Full time, the responsibility has to be shifted again to my father.

Timeline -
Cisco - July 2011 - Jan 2013
FB - Feb 2013 - Dec 2013 ( Attempt cat )
2013 - Part time ?
2014 - Full time ?

Thanks !

@icecool11 The Bank PO and doing an MBA wouldn't be good options in my opinion. Both will be bit hectic and/or demanding and like supro said Bank PO posting's may also not be favorable. MBA will definitely be not favorable, in terms of the time required for it and the dedication you'll need for Civil Service examination. Not that other options are good. But at least its better since you'll have weekends to yourself to prepare (in IT job). SSC will also be good option as plan B.

I joined shapoorji in aug 2012 which is a construction company through campus selection in NIT Durgapur. I have decent acads with
88.6% X and 89.8% in XII.
As of what I have learned at site, if you are working in construction company it is very difficult (almost impossible) to change your line of work from construction to something such as automobile or energy sector. Also being a mechanical engineer construction work is very much useless to me as nothing of engineering what I have learnt (maybe very little) is applicable here. I dont love my work, rather I hate it !Construction site conditions and working hours are horrible, so I want to change my profession asap.
I am very much interested in doing a MBA with marketing specialization. I gave CAT 2012 with very less prep, as it was my first time I also dont remember how many question I got right or wrong or even attempted (it was a disaster). I have applied to NITIE,IMT,SP Jain,XIMB,XLRI,MDI. If I am able to get & convert a call from any of these I will definitely go, little bit skeptical about IMT ( High Fees 😞 ). I have prepared for XAT vaguely, due to work pressure but I think it wont be as bad as CAT was.
What I want to ask is that if I am not getting any calls from these shall I apply to other schools like TAPMI or IMI or KJSOM,etc or leave my work and get a job in small (can be very small) design firm or anything of that sort and try again next year. Well whatever the case might be I will be leaving my present field of work that is for certain.
Any help advices regarding such greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

@whitefanng Would advise you to try CAT again next year, in case you do not make it to the top Bschools this year. You have time in your hands. :)

I was told that I would get more help here.

I have screwed up my life and now looking at CAT as a way out

I am in a very difficult spot right now and any help would be really appreciated.
@SMS87
what kind of help are you looking for?
If you want me to reduce it to a single sentence...
I am looking for a way to get back on track and to regain lost time and income.

hi everybody...

good to see that seniors are resolving the issues related to mental dilemma.

My Profile:

calls-new iims,vgsom,iim shillong,iim-indore(rak campus and mumbai campus)

converted-2 new iims and iim-indore(rak campus)

joined-cat 2012

i have already attempted cat but everyone know about the unpredictablity of the normalisation approach followed by prometric, thats why i am worried about my cat score this time. The problem is if I get a low score,I would feel dejected...

i am more inclined to do a fpm program from IIM,but have heard that very few people are able to complete the course in time and lot many leave the course inbetween. Is FPM program really that much hectic...??

hi all......

I am a M.Pharm from BIT, Mesra and working in Cipla at Himachal pradesh, from July 2012.
my acads:
10th: 81.37%
12th: 86.5%
B.Pharm: 84.6%
M.Pharm: 86.5%
As I'm in contract mfg dept, I'm not able to learn the basic skills of pharma industry. But I think my experience here is quite suitable for an MBA degree as my job is related to managing the business of Cipla at other contract mfg companies that involves quality management, inventory control, supply chain, batch scheduling and all. I appeared for CAT and SNAP 2012 with little preps. No idea about expected CAT percentile (attempted 60% question with low error) and SNAP ended in a fiasco as expected score is around 90-95 which cannot fetch a call from good SYMBI inst. My future plan is to move towards Kolkata. So should I:
i) start prep for CAT 2013 (considering getting in a good Bschool, and a job in WB after MBA) or
ii)prepare well for Bank PO and other govt jobs as possible (considering will land me in WB)
or
iii) just leave the illusion of WB and continue to be in the pharma sector (salary is not so high and no chance for back to bengal)

hello please guide me to a proper thread if any ..

i am a CA final student , i am not interested in monotonus/clerical type of jobs which a ca has to do , though i'll be completing my degree i really do not want to end up doing this kind of work in future . after reading a lot of threads here i have realized that most of the engineers here doing MBA are doing for a domain change and almost everyone is inclined towards MBA in finance/ CFA / .
i haven't come across people of the opposite switch like from finance/commerce to science , i guess there aren't many ..
please tell me what are the options for me if there are any ?
am i stuck with this decision for whole of my life ?

please help me . i hope someone reply

thanks for your time
