hello please guide me to a proper thread if any ..

i am a CA final student , i am not interested in monotonus/clerical type of jobs which a ca has to do , though i'll be completing my degree i really do not want to end up doing this kind of work in future . after reading a lot of threads here i have realized that most of the engineers here doing MBA are doing for a domain change and almost everyone is inclined towards MBA in finance/ CFA / .
i haven't come across people of the opposite switch like from finance/commerce to science , i guess there aren't many ..
please tell me what are the options for me if there are any ?
am i stuck with this decision for whole of my life ?

please help me . i hope someone reply

thanks for your time

Hi Puys,

I have done PGDM from a tier-B Business School and am currently working in a KPO for the past 10 months in financial sector with a salary package that I am not really proud of (3.5L). Recently I have been selected in Andhra Bank for the post of Bank PO and I am really scared of my job location which will only be disclosed after the training period. The only reason I am looking for the PO job is because it will provide me better job security. But I have serious doubts whether the frequent transfers in the most remote part of India, loads of work pressure in PO jobs really worth it or not. I am preparing for SSC CGL and RBI grade-B this year but it is really tough to guess what will come in future.

My question is, should I carry on with my present 5 day/week job with zero work-pressure and prepare for SSC and RBI or would it be sensible to grab the current opportunity in Bank PO. I really need your expert suggestions on this.

Dont join bank and prepare for SSC and RBI. Because
1. The transfer and work pressures.
2. SSC is very much doable thing. You have just to wait for it.
3. The NOC issues we discussed.
By the way which college you did MBA from?

For starters there is Finance,Marketing, Advertising, Retail Management, HR, Bank Management etc etc.
But which one of these branch sounds enticing to you is your own decision as while you have cleared that you don't wanna continue your clerical kinda job you are yet to find what interests you. Maybe there are roles in Finance itself which are so important that you may fall for them.

So again- what interests you

hi all......I am a M.Pharm from BIT, Mesra and working in Cipla at Himachal pradesh, from July 2012.my acads:10th: 81.37%12th: 86.5%B.Pharm: 84.6%M.Pharm: 86.5% As I'm in contract mfg dept, I'm not able to learn the basic skills of pharma industry. But I think my experience here is quite suitable for an MBA degree as my job is related to managing the business of Cipla at other contract mfg companies that involves quality management, inventory control, supply chain, batch scheduling and all. I appeared for CAT and SNAP 2012 with little preps. No idea about expected CAT percentile (attempted 60% question with low error) and SNAP ended in a fiasco as expected score is around 90-95 which cannot fetch a call from good SYMBI inst. My future plan is to move towards Kolkata. So should I:i) start prep for CAT 2013 (considering getting in a good Bschool, and a job in WB after MBA) or ii)prepare well for Bank PO and other govt jobs as possible (considering will land me in WB)oriii) just leave the illusion of WB and continue to be in the pharma sector (salary is not so high and no chance for back to bengal)
If you want to stay in Bengal give SSC CGL.
If you are ready to give up WB dreams for loads of money prepare again for MBA.

Its not hectic. Its PhD sorts. Not a lot of people have patience of waiting for 4 years to get gyaan and then give gyaan. Money and greed takes over and people eventually settle for 2 years from a lesser college rather than investing 2-3 extra years.

Give SSC or Bank PO. Not much questions asked about your past.
@Rish1 bro if many are leaving a boat in a hurry then that means that ship is sinking......and yes u can switch from science to any domain u like but the vice versa is not true.......if u want to change ur role do MBA and work as buisness ansalyst or prep for civil services/army

As stated in an earlier post, a fellow programme is one which combines a pg and a phd. hence it usually takes 4 to 5 years. in IIMs, fellow programme students get to participate in the same placements as normal PG people, so you come out of it with a good job in hand and a phd. so go for it if you have the patience. that is the only key. it is not hectic at all. in fact it is more laid back than a pg programme.

and your acadwmic profile is good, i dont see why you shouldnt get fpm calls.
if you have any workex, that always helps

its not true that most MBAs tend towards finance. it is an impression arising out of the fact that finance MBAs fetch the highest salaries.

your problem is not a very difficult one. all you have to do is get in touch with people who have passed out of bschools and get to know from them what kind of qork they are doing. this will tell you whether you will like a post MBA job or not, and if you do then which stream should you specialise in. Apart from finance, there is marketing, operations, systems, hr, etc

however, given your CA background, you will be most auitwd for a finance MBA. However, dont think that post mba finance jobs are monotonous. they are in fact quite hectic and exciting

so get in touch with the right people, take your decision and start your prep. all the best

I joined shapoorji in aug 2012 which is a construction company through campus selection in NIT Durgapur. I have decent acads with 88.6% X and 89.8% in XII.As of what I have learned at site, if you are working in construction company it is very difficult (almost impossible) to change your line of work from construction to something such as automobile or energy sector. Also being a mechanical engineer construction work is very much useless to me as nothing of engineering what I have learnt (maybe very little) is applicable here. I dont love my work, rather I hate it !Construction site conditions and working hours are horrible, so I want to change my profession asap. I am very much interested in doing a MBA with marketing specialization. I gave CAT 2012 with very less prep, as it was my first time I also dont remember how many question I got right or wrong or even attempted (it was a disaster). I have applied to NITIE,IMT,SP Jain,XIMB,XLRI,MDI. If I am able to get & convert a call from any of these I will definitely go, little bit skeptical about IMT ( High Fees ). I have prepared for XAT vaguely, due to work pressure but I think it wont be as bad as CAT was. What I want to ask is that if I am not getting any calls from these shall I apply to other schools like TAPMI or IMI or KJSOM,etc or leave my work and get a job in small (can be very small) design firm or anything of that sort and try again next year. Well whatever the case might be I will be leaving my present field of work that is for certain.Any help advices regarding such greatly appreciated.Thanks.
many have been through such a situation in the past, you are not alone... :-)

about your work : yes a construction site job is very hectic and does not leave time for prep. and it is very dull work for a mechie.
so my advice is start looking for jobs in firms like L&T; or Essar or Siemens, etc which recruit mechanical engineers and the hours are not very bad. getting a job in a small fiem is not bad, but taking time for prep cannot be the only reason for working in a small firm. if you get a call and are asked in an interview about your learnings from your job, then you shpuld have some concrete learning and contribution to show for your many months of workex. so keep that in mind while choosing a job.

as for MBA prep, dont fret too much about your first CAT going bad. it took me 4 attempts to get into NITIE. :-)

try for CAT 2013 with some concentrated and diligent prep. which means atleast 2-3 hours of study everyday till your CAT date. if you manage a good score in entrance exams next year, you should get calls, because your academic profile seems good.

pm for more queries.

Hi,I am currently working in Cisco and will be joining Family Business from Feb 2013.I would like to get some advise on MBA career.1. Attempted cat 2012 - not much hope.2. 10 - 91.6 % 12 - 84.4 % College Vit - Mech Eng - 8.8 CGPA pass out - 20113. Goals to clear CAT 2013.Background on business - The Business is growing as of now and it is a private limited company. My dad and his friend are in partnership and now when I go I would be ramping up to take all the responsibilities of my father. The company is a manufacturing company and we are sole manufacturers of Plate type heat exchanger who manufactures in India except the Big Shots who cater large market share. We have currently invested in a technology that will help in manufacturing some Vital Parts in India rather than importing those. Hence huge saving on this individual part. There is a lot to learn as all the solution we provide are solution based and hence lot of manufacturing practical things have to learnt to take over the responsibility. My Dilemma -How good is pursuing MBA Full time in 2013? If I go for full time ( after getting good percentile ), is it worth giving up for 2 years compared to the improvement that can be made at home ?How Good is Part time MBA ?Should I start pursuing part time now ? or wait for another attempt and try for Full time?If I attempt Full time, the responsibility has to be shifted again to my father.Timeline - Cisco - July 2011 - Jan 2013FB - Feb 2013 - Dec 2013 ( Attempt cat )2013 - Part time ?2014 - Full time ?Thanks !
the thing with Part time courses is that they divise your attention. you will have to concentrate on your business as qell as your studies at the same time for as long as you are going through the course. this can prove taxing and it can take its toll on performance in both areas. a full time course relieves you of this burden. and if its a family business, im sure you can always rejoin it after completing a full time course.

and before you join a full time course, you can concentrate on your business and achieve significant milestones which will help in any bschool application.

think about it this way

I did my graduation from St. Xaviers College (B.com Morning). My academics -Class X - 91%Class XII - 91%B.Com - 68%CAT 2011 - 90.14I passed out college in 2012. I appeared for CAT 2011 when I was in third/final year of my college.I am 21 now, for some or the other reason I did not apply in any B School apart from the IIM's. Then I missed out on CAT 2012 for some issues. Now I want to sit for entrance exams again. I do not have any work experience as such. All I have is my dads business which I have been into for an year. But now I want to get back into track with MBA again. Please suggest me a way out, what should be good for me? and how should I move ahead. Your replies will be highly appreciated. If I sit for CAT and other exams now, I may/may not get a 90+ score again, but without work ex from a renowned source, I wont be able to crack good colleges. I do not aim for IIM and all, but a semi grade college. Thus please I seek for help. If I try to go for CAT 2013, which is far from now, I will have to insert this upcoming phase of 8-9 months to studies and if I do not get a good score then I will be left stranded.Experienced Puys, please help me. I will be greatly indebted to one and all.
if you regularly work and contribute at your fathers business, it can be considered as legitimate workex. just arrange for some documented proof of employment.

so do not worry about your workex, although you can always keep looking for other jobs.

if you start now and put in 2 to 3 hours of focused prep each day, you should be well prepared for CAT 2013.

and do not think you cannot target top bschools. you have a good academic profile, although your graduation percentage might be a problem in some institutes. i suggest you apply to all top institutes, prepare well for all entrance exams and hope for the best.

good luck !!

Thanks. I get your point. 1. Business WorkEx would help in B school applications, but some how hunch is that I might not be able to leave business in case I get through in 2013 results. In that case I would have to start part time after an year which I could have started an year earlier. Also, can you guide in to some forum for part time courses, any info you have on IIM Lucknow Noida campus ? Thanks again !
