Let me give me a samll intro (although speaking of Marks and Career at the 1st instance is very bad)Xth-86.9XIIth -78.1BTECH -- 8.45Working Experience of 3years in Infosys and CMC Limited and will be joining CTS after some days. So the total Exp is in IT.I am planning to give CAT in 2013.Now the queries are:1. Do my experience and Marks makes me not a suitable candidate for FULL TIME PGDM in any good ranked Institute?2. With my profile - does scoring less than 97-98%ile ends the CAT hope for that year?3.Do u think that getting into reputed Coaching Institutes help a person or going for less knowned Coaching Centers with good faculties who take personal care helps.4.Suggest me some books and links for study.5. Can you give a rough study plan(provided that I am completely NUMB in Maths and more or less OK OK in VERBAL)
Although Mukul has replied, I though I'll add on "few" (although the length of the post does not say so! 😛 ) things:
1. Your profile is near to exceptional as per Indian Standards and you're eligible for MBA in almost all top institutes except maybe few like IIM B, SPJAIN etc. which look for consistent 80% throughout!! Experience wise you're part of a big crowd of people!! But then by the time you get admission through CAT 2013 it will be almost 4-4.5yrs of work exp and I wouldn't recommend doing an MBA except from the likes of IIM A, IIM B, IIM C, XLRI, FMS, SPJAIN, IIT B etc. I would rather recommend 1yr MBA for Executives programmes in India or abroad, for which you'll have to take GMAT!
2. With less than 97-98%tile you may not get call from institutes which consider only entrance exam score (which are very few in that top league), but for others like SPJAIN which look at overall profile you stand a very good chance.
3. Irrespective of coaching institute, faculty and all that, what matters is your own preparation!! The shortcuts and what they teach you there are mere guidelines which you can develop by being regular in a portal like PaGaLGuY or elsewhere. So you can probably think of joining a coaching institute which has good material (according to your liking and comfort level), and MAINLY some good mock test series like TIME AIMCATs, CL ProcMocks, TG mocks etc.
4. You can check in the Prep section for Quant, LR/DI and Verbal threads there and ask veterans and experts in the respective section to suggest good books for prep.
5. Study plan is for you to prepare based on your current level in different areas. Based on what you say start with basics of Quant as of now. Do as many questions as possible from the major areas like Numbers, Permutation & Combination, Probability, Geometry etc. And trust me, you're still way too far to go by a fixed plan. You'll experience burn out if you start like that so early. Get into a plan mode maybe by around end of Jan. Play around with questions from different areas and find out where exactly you're lacking within QA, or LR/DI, or VA. And then develop a plan accordingly. This is my suggestion. Its up to you to gauge it properly and decide to take it or not! :)

All the Best! :cheerio:
@Atulit123 Firstly you need not lose hope on getting into IIMs!

Your work experience in dad's business will be counted if you're a salaried employee and drawing a salary. You'll just need to show a joining letter & last 3 month's (at the time of admission) payslip's to show your work exp, and I don't think you'll have much trouble getting that! :mg:

Don't lose confidence based on one low score (CAT 2011) and a missed opportunity (CAT 2012). If you sit and prepare well for the next 9 months you can still make it into high 90's and target some very good institutes like NITIE, MDI etc. and maybe few IIMs also!! Its CAT 2013 and you still have 9 months to go. WHAT IF you don't clear is too early to think about as of now. So forget all that as of now and focus on building your basic concepts and continuing prep.

Read through the thread "All I wanted to say about CAT" (use PG Search at top right to find it) to know of success stories of people who got through into their dream institute after 3, 4 and sometimes 5th attempt!!! Failures should be stepping stones to success. 😃 Keep visiting PG and interacting with many people, go for few PG meets in your city/town etc. and trust me it'll help keep you motivated with preparation when you listen to others story of prep, hardships faced etc.
Hi all,

Firstly, I hope this is the right thread for this post. & apologies if I've erred.

I'm seeking some honest, straight-forward advice. No matter if it's bitter. So I'll get right down to it.

Short Query: Does trying for a full time MBA at 30 make sense for a person who has had no experience in the corporate world (read as 'has only been engaged in a small family business after finishing studies')?
1. Would a reputed institute take in a 30-31 year old, &
2. Would a 32-33 year old be accepted by a Co. as a fresher?

Long Query: I'm 30 now, & currently engaged in business in Mumbai [I'm a small store owner]. As regards academics, I've completed my BA (Economics) & LLB about 6 years back. Business isn't what it once was, & it's clear to me that I'm going to need to change my profession if I have to survive. A couple of friends suggested going the MBA route, & that's what I've been mulling over.

It's clear to me that the degree/diploma will have to be from a reputed institute. Otherwise, there's no point in doing it. So lets just assume that I get a score (be it CMAT, CAT, NMAT etc.) good enough to get into such a reputed institute. Would they take in a 30-31 year old?

Secondly, even if I do complete an MBA, would Cos. hire a 32-33 year old, with no corporate experience?

All in all, does it make sense for a guy in my position to go back to school, spend 2 years only studying, & spending lakhs in fees rather than join some Co. & try & work my way up?

Would an MBA be feasible? Would an MBA be beneficial?

Many thanks. Much obliged.
@kidrow There's no age barrier to doing an MBA or any education for that matter!! 😃 So, yes you can go for MBA even now. In Tier II B-Schools, the concern you have raised about whether companies will hire you as fresher may be true for some organizations but not all. If you're OK starting with salaries in the range of 6-8lakhs (worst case!) also then go for it. Otherwise I would only recommend to go for the top 15-20 B-Schools in the country but then yes you'll have to convince them of your learning in the business over 6 years, how you can add value in the batch and what you can be after 2 years of MBA. So be prepared and choose your words after good thought on it.

MAYBE you can also try for some 1 year programs listed at http://www.pagalguy.com/posts/4246458 where average work exp and age will be your same category. You'll just have to show your entrepreneurship (although its passed on family business you/your dad is proprietor and owner) experience and leverage that to get an MBA admission. Maybe by saying that you have ideas to take your business forward but wanted a formal education to bring credibility, and also have structured thoughts on running a business and managing various aspects related to it.

So bottom-line is, YES you can do an MBA (1 or 2 year) if you have the right mindset and the thoughts to SELL yourself to the interviewers (B-school admissions and also final placements after MBA). B-Schools will give you admission in the first place only if you can prove that you have a "place-able" profile. So technically speaking you only need to prove yourself once!! If you have got admission in a B-School then it means they think they can get you placed in one of the organizations that visit there. So that should give you the required confidence. 😃 You can probably start prep for major exams like CAT, XAT, GMAT, CMAT, NMAT etc. All the Best! :cheerio:

Edit: There are also specific MBA programmes called Family Managed Business programme, like at ISB Hyderabad!!! Check latest article in news section in PaGaLGuY. Do a google search and look for other options also. :)
@ajaygovindg Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Yours is probably the 1st positive response I've received on this matter ever since I've started exploring it. Every acquaintance I've approached has said that it'll be very tough to get placed, since even the younger MBAs are having difficulty. So most suggested going the LLB route (maybe an LPO to start with) or trying out computer graphics (a hobby I've nurtured for a while now) instead of spending 2-3 years studying & ending up back to square one. What I took away from them was that my age would be a barrier in getting placed, irrespective of merit.

I don't know if those I approached were the right persons to be seeking advice from, but I don't have anyone else in my friends' circle or family who has any relevant experience in this regard.

What you are saying though is that I stand a good chance of being placed if I do the MBA from one of the top 25-30 colleges. Another positive is that these colleges will take me in only if they feel I can be placed. So if I don't get into these colleges, it's a sign that I need to re-think my plans. If I do manage to get in, it means I'm on firm ground.

Also, the years spent away from academics or lack of corporate experience will not be a deterrent so long as I can convince the interview panel that I will be adding value to the class.

I hope I'm not misinterpreting. If I am, please do not hesitate to correct me.

Again, many thanks for your time.

Would also appreciate others' opinions. Would be much obliged if they'd be so kind as to share it.

Hi pUys,
I got an offer to work as customer service associate -retail banking and credit card division of AXIS bank.Do this job experience will get counted during placement??I am interested in MBA MARKETING /HR.

@kidrow Yep all correct except few things:
1. Top 15-20 institutes and not beyond that.
2. I do not have any "credentials" to boast of in guiding you except having been acquainted with MBA & admissions for past 6yrs and having done an MBA myself & having good network to know what's happening in other institutes (just overall idea and not last mile details). So I'm not sure where you want to put me - with those others you spoke with or separate!! :mg:
3. Yes, you can leverage and use your entrepreneurship experience to explain how you've learnt the practical aspects of business and how you can contribute in group work, assignments, projects etc. and be a team player at the same time be a leader in certain aspects also.

Do consider the 1yr and Family Managed Business programs also. All the Best. :cheerio:

hi frndz.. i am in a huge dilemma since last 6 months.. i am a final year B.com graduate.. my family is very orthodox and i am very sure they wont allow me to work in nite shifts in any mnc.. meanwhile i joined chartered accountant course due to pressure from my uncle.. i am very good at it.. but my problem is i want to work after studying MBA.. since it involves huge funds my parents are determined to get me married.. i am not interested in marriage.. i am very confused.. can any1 help me...

@Sunil.Bathini Any work experience will be counted (in quantity). If you're appearing for CAT 2013 and other MBA entrance exams in that season, then you'll have around 1 year work exp which is good, rather than being idle for that whole time from now.

As regards to quality, for a B-School admission it all depends on how you portray your work exp, what words you choose to explain the learning and how you define the work exp fitting into the overall scheme of things i.e. your career!!! For a Marketing profile after MBA you'll mostly get Sales profiles from Tier II institutes, but in top 15-20, or Tier I institutes, you have chances of getting in core Marketing profiles like Brand Manager etc.
@ajaygovindg Thank you

Any full time significant (>1 yr) work exp will be given credit!

Tier I B-Schools - All old IIMs (BLACKI), XLRI, FMS, SJMSOM IIT-B, ISB, IIFT, MDI, SPJAIN are some of those top 20 B-Schools in the country.
@ajaygovindg SIBM-P,SCMHRD,JB,SIMREE(SYDNHEM) do this colleges come under tier-II????
@panick 6months is not that big a time to be difficult to justify. You can easily say you had personal/family reasons!! :mg: Give it some thought and maybe you can have a convincing reason for the gap.

Future course of action: Try for another job and get into it to work till admissions next year i.e. April/May 2014. If you still have MBA plans start your prep for next season of exams also in parallel!!
@Sunil.Bathini JBIMS I would classify in Tier I itself. I personally don't trust the Symbiosis brand, so wouldn't include them there. But then yes SIBM-P also features in the top in many rankings. SCMHRD and SIMSREE I would probably categorize as Tier II only (simple perception from what I've heard from others and not based on any facts)!

P.S: Looks like you want an MBA from Maharashtra only?
