I have done B.Tech(I.T), passed out in 2012. I want to do MBA in marketing so that I can become Product Manager in an I.T company. Is it a short-term goal or not?and how marketing will help in achieving it?please reply urgent
1. Becoming a product manager in and IT company is about 3-4 years from now, depending on when you crack the mba exams and take up a bschool. So that should be a long term goal.

2. Some of the responsibilities of a product manager are defining product strategy, performing product demos to customer, internal and external partnership, conduct competitive analysis etc and there will be other tactical responsibilities. These all you'll be learning in your mba. So I believe marketing is definitely going to help.

Apart from that, don't think that whatever is necessary for the job, you can get from the degree itself, some things are there which come from experience as you work in the industry. So don't worry much and give the best you have. :)

i currently have 40 months of work ex in IT planning another retake for cat 2013 cause the percentile i got won't get me into my dream b-skul, by the next year would i have too much work-ex for a regular mba?

there are people with more than 7 years of work ex in regular mba. you should aim only for top 10 b schools mainly ISB by writing GMAT 😃

Dear Seniors,

Please see my story and kindly advice.

X. 89.
XII. 97.3
B.tech. 82(passed out in 2009 and all the 3 from Andhra Pradesh)
WE. TCS from Mar,10 to Jun,12.
Resigned the job due to family issues and dissatisfaction and have been job less from july'12.
CAT'11 . OA.89. QA.83. VA.90
CAT'12. OA.73. QA.96 VA.21
XAT'12. OA.88

Applied for IMT, TAPMI, Great Lakes, IFMR and XIMB RM.

There are three paths to choose from.
1. Work hard and Convert the colleges and join the best of them.
2. Look out for a job and then chase CAT again this year.
3. Look out for a job and try converting the schools and decide to join the school if i had no job by May and if I am able to get a job by May, then stick around and chase CAT.

Moreover, by 2014 june, i will get 4yrs experience(btech 2009 passed out and I had a gap in 2009 because tcs called us so late, late by 10months), so am I eligible for normal MBA(though my age will be 26) or do i face any issues while admission or during placements?? Can I change my course(from IT to other field)??
If there are issues, then I need to think abt exec 1 yr mba( and become some sales guy or a consultant)

Kindly enlighten me.
Thanks in advance.

Yes it is difficult. But definitely not impossible. See when there is 100% placement in top b-schools you are bound to get the job 😁 Moreover, major IT companies recruit consultants from these schools. If you are planning for change in the sector then it would be really difficult . You got to prove your point.

Basically long term goals are more of like what we have in our mind for us in 5 or 10 years from now. You break your long term goal in 3 or 4 steps, i.e realise what all you need to do in order to reach at a place you see in your vision 5-10 years from now. These broken parts/steps are your short term goals. In your case, you can state that completing the mba degree is you short term goal. Because it is one of the steps that will take you where you intend to be in future.

@banu2312 Thanks. My long term goal is to become the Vice-President and Head of an I.T company. I believe that after becoming product manager this will be the perfect launch pad to realise my long term goal. What do you think? what should i tell the panelists? Please reply

@avinashkrjha Sir, what does a brand manager exactly do??

Hi I am an engg grad from NIt and a work experience of nearly 36 month when i will rite my next cat exam in 2013 . i have a average educational background , so what i have to do enhance my profile , Is i have to go for any certification or i have to work on my extra curricular , because i cant change my acadmic which is a aveage one
Bhai.. Extra curricular ke chakkar me aap agar kam percentile layega to calls hi nahi ayega.. Instead of this, if u put extra efforts in the preparation of CAT , it will be more helpful.. Waise hi aap ka work ex accha hey.. tho extra curricular ki kya zaroorat hey :)
@RTR_Naman

Can't say about the exact work.

But, a brand manager is responsible for the entire design, creativity and the distribution of a product or group of products or services.

The task could include (though not limited to) Market Research, Pricing, Advertisement, Product Distribution, etc.

@bhargav.nitc

Dear puys and seniors,

There comes a time when one is totally lost and only keeps thinking what to do instead of performing actions. Even though with good academic records iam now in such a situation........My last qualification being B.Com , made up my mind for an MBA course before passing out the graduation.

I prepared for CAT 2011 with no good preparation, least bothered with career attempted it and as expected , the results were abysmal. During the same year i was facing certain health issues and some personal problems. Finally decided for second attempt with good preparation. Attempted CAT 2012 and unexpectedly the results were not that good as i was expecting them to be this year.

Now iam totally lost with no expectations in my life. The depression is more because of no work experience till date and no extra curricular activities (Which i could have done last year).

Various people around discourage me for MBA (People in today's time mostly don't value MBA ) and instead advise me for pursuing professional courses like CA/ICWA. Iam now of 23yrs and can not afford to spend 4-5 years for further studies in CA and to be very frank i feel more defeated thinking "by not cracking CAT only ,attempting twice ,how can a person even think of going for CA".

Mistakes till date :

No work Exp ( But was a helping hand in family business with no depth knowledge)
No Extra Activities
No Other courses in these 2 years of Gap.

Profile :

10th CBSE - 85%
12th State Board - 92.2%
Graduation - 81%

Iam Currently Idle with my MAT dec 2012 scores as 93%tile with no other good results.

Please suggest me what can be done for a good start . What colleges are good under MAT .....what should i do now ???????
One thing iam sure about is i cant afford to skip one more year for CAT.

I want to pursue MBA......I want to show to my people that even MBA is hardworking and high respected in the society but not value-less. Doing MBA just for the sake of showing-off to my people is not my main reason . But still is an other strong reason somewhere in me.

Please suggest me what can be done ?? Any other course with MBA advisable ? If yes , then what are they ?

Please help me in this regard.

Bhai.. Firstly you need not get depressed & loose hope for failing twice or thrice.. Sachin Tendulkar scored his 1st ODI century in 79th match he played.. Had he got disappointed initially, then we would not have talked about him !! Hence patience & perserverance is the key.. hope you got my point :)

Your acads are very good & I see no reason why you cannot get a call from IIM A,B C & rest all if you get a decent percentile..

Although I'm not big enough to give you any advice, from my perspective Let me tell you few things:

Just because you want to prove some one wrong you should not do MBA.. Yes, it can help as a motivating factor for preparing well but it should not be a reason for doing MBA..

Spend one entire day or two thinking about yourself, rite from your childhood days, your interests , your strengths & weaknesses, your long term goals, ambition in life , etc.,

Then see if MBA fits into your scheme of things.. If yes, then from which colleges you need to do MBA so that it helps you in achieving your dream.. & accordingly decide whether to do MBA or not??

If yes, then whether to do it from a college which you get using your MAT score or wait for an year & give your best shot at CAT, XAT, IIFT, SNAP, CMAT, etc.,

If you yourself is convinced why u want to do MBA, then there is no reason why you cannot convince any panel when you get some interview calls..

There are lot of examples where guys who sat idle for 2-3 years & then finally finished their MBA from top B-Schools..

Hope it helps.. All the best
