Various people around discourage me for MBA (People in today's time mostly don't value MBA ) and instead advise me for pursuing professional courses like CA/ICWA. Iam now of 23yrs and can not afford to spend 4-5 years for further studies in CA and to be very frank i feel more defeated thinking "by not cracking CAT only ,attempting twice ,how can a person even think of going for CA".

& yeah.. Cut that various people out.. These so called various people are there everywhere who give free advice every now & then.. If you start listening & thinking about their sayings, then trust me you will reach no where in life.. Instead believe in yourself

@priyank413456 I second @bhargav.nitc.There will always be a bunch of losers who have never achieved anything their entire life and are envious of people who aspire for a dream career.Do not pay heed to their words.I also went through a similar experience.Reminds me of afamous line written by Jeffrey Archer in the book Only Time Will Tell. After harry clifton successfully qualifies for bristol grammer school but fails to get the scholarship due to verbal section an old lady said that he should have read Thomas Hardy.Archer through his words poked a fun at her by writing("He should have read Hardy instead of Dickens," said the woman who has never read a book in her entire life).

I am a 22yr old civil engineer with no interest in civil engineering..I gave up my job a few months before to prepare for MBA..gt 72% in cat..disappointed with the result..

I am really confused about what to do in life now..should i start searching for a job or should i just take admission in some b grade b school??
The thing is i'm very much sure if i don't get into a good b school..my life will more or less remain the same...
Is taking up a teaching job okay?? so that i can prepare for MBA side by side...
I'm sure most of you'l would have gone through a similar phase in life...pls guide me..
@rakesh.p.nair I am no stalwart but let me give my views .Look there is a reason why less people from core engineering sectors make it to good b-schools.The job environment is pathetic moreover the location is remote where you will find difficult to even sit for mock cats forget going for classroom coaching and like.To top it off 14 hrs of hectic work which does not satisfy your engineering education and also does not let you study for any entrance(I managed barely 30-45 mins per day this year for CAT,yes you heard it right 30-45 mins only, somedays even that seemed impossible). My advice to you would be to take up a software job in a metro, take up a test series and give your best for CAT 2013.Do not even think of going for a core sector job.It is not a mere coincidence that year after year IT sector employees get good(read great ) scores in CAT.The few core sector people who make the cut are freshers.

hi,

I am currently in my third year of BBM in Christ university. I want to know what is the best course of action after graduation job or masters. I gave GMAT without preparation and got a 450 which will not help in admissions in the US. I considered applying in UK but as there are no jobs available I opted out.

Thanks,
Rishita
Hi puys, its really relieving to get someone to hear you out and guide you in times of need. my academics: ICSE 83% (2003 pass), ISC 85% (2005 pass), B.F. Tech from NIFT 8.9 CGPA (2009 pass) Two years work ex since then. I had to resign citing health issues and return back to my home. Later I was diagnosed having relapsing Hepatatis A which resulted in liver complications and was bed ridden for almost four months. I am still under medication and am advised to stay at home under strict diet and not to indulge in any heavy physical work. Though I gave CAT this year without any preparation as I sick through entire last year and managed a 70 percentile. My doctor says that it would take another four to five months before I can start working again.
But now I am under the dilemma that should i start working again or should give CAT again and wait for the results before joining work. Actually I would be able to job only around august just two months before CAT.
Also will this two year idle gap become a big hurdle in my way to get an admission into Top 10 B Schools such as an IIM.
What could I do in the meantime as I am nothing but sitting ducks in my home as I cannot do any heavy physical work or live away from my home?
Please advice.
@nitish_007 As long as you score well in engg and CAT, dont worry about the backlogs. You can explain that to the interview panel. Also, it would help if you have some years of work experience before u start your MBA

Bhai.. One thing from my side is please have a clarity on why you want to do MBA now? whether for placements alone?? or some value addition to your profile?? or to achieve some goal in your life in which MBA can help??

If you are clear, then I see no reason why you cannot continue doing the same (family business) & at the same time prepare for CAT or XAT & score well

These days most of the top B-Schools have almost nil weightage for Work-ex while shortlisting for interviews.. So, it should not be a problem for getting a call if you get a good percentile in these exams provided your acads are good.. 😃

Once you get a call, I'm a firm believer that you can always defend your stake & convince them provided you are able to correctly project all your learnings in the past 3 years in your family business :)

If you get selected, then I'm not the rite person to comment about placements because I myself still did not begin my career of MBA.. Some guys already in a good b-school can provide their inputs May be @avinashkrjha sir can help you :)

IMHO.. If you are serious about doing MBA, then I suggest you do not join any job in August because Aug, Sep & Oct are peak months for your preparation.. If you newly join in some organization, then you might not able to balance both.. Better you finish off giving CAT & then start working .. but its entirely your call :)

Sitting idle for 2 years - you can always defend because you have medical certificates stating the same right .. I guess it would not be a problem..

Because you have lot of free time , you can prepare very well & also you can work on your interests & hobbies, current affairs, etc., All the best :)

First you decide why you want to do MBA in US.. Then choose the colleges which you are going to target.. Then see the admission criterion of all those.. Accordingly decide whether you want to do immediately or after some work-ex :)

Thanx ...... I think u r right, better to finish CAT then go for the job. Just hoping that the 2 yr gap does no affect my career much...
@sb29 But I have mentioned that I won't be able to cross 58-59% agg score in my Engg even after acing the remaining subjects, which is below the magical 60 figure. If I try hard enough, I can manage a decent CAT score. It is the acads which is demoralizing me.

Hi have been following this forum for quite a time and I believe somebody always has a solution or suggestion to everyone's problems. I had posted here before and have got kind suggestions. Hence am posting once again

10th : 87%
Lost my focus toward studies after 10th.
12th : 73%

B.Tech (Elec and Communication) : 67% (getting above 70% is "good" and above 75% "exceptional" in Calicut University. My college was just an average one)

Have got a Telecom training certificate from BSNL in latest telecom technologies (latest as in 2010 😃 )

Work experience : 2 yrs. (Attended Wipro off campus recruitment simply with friends, was placed.)

My initial time at Wipro was great. I used to do automation testing for a good project. Now for the past 1 year, I have been part of an extremely boring project with bad management and after "suffering"(my only task is data entry, validating excel report) for the past 3 month and have presently resigned. Now on notice period for 2 months.

I plan to join a full time MBA Training course like Career Launcher or Time and give a try at the coming exams (MBA and Bank) I am thinking of MBA as a solution for escaping from this IT job. Is my plan good or not?

Your objective is escaping from IT, and so an MBA will be a fresh start for you. So in post MBA placements you'll have to be prepared for lesser salary packages also as you can't leverage or utilize your prior work exp. Not that it will be totally wasted, but there will be many organizations which you might want to get into but they'll reject you or consider you as a fresher!! By the way post MBA the nature of jobs you can get in IT will be totally different so if you want to utilize/leverage that fully you may want to try for that also.

Also its not recommended to stay idle while preparing for the exams, as questions may arise in admission interviews for the gap, and why you're not able to multitask. But since you've already resigned you may want to look for some small job OR be prepared to answer those questions on why not switch job rather than having quit job!

@vinuchel Adding to what has been said above, MBA is not the answer to everything. Post MBA job can also become very boring. It depends on luck.

You mentioned that you were enjoying the work initially before getting shifted to this boring project. This means that you enjoy working in the tech field. Why not find another IT job where you will be happier with the work. From what I see among my friends, after 1-2 job shifts in IT, the salary becomes quite good.

@sb29 .. I doubt anything worse than my present job would be there. I didnt exactly enjoy one moment working in IT. and for me salary is not everything. I would prefer a job with learning and job satisfaction compared to one with huge salary. Also some family commitments are also forcing me to stay at home.
I seriously hope my decision to study full time is a good one.

Hi @vinuchel,
Read your situation. My case is almost opposite that of yours. I joined a Big IT firm, but left midway into the training after 2.5 months only.Reason: Got a Govt Job in Punjab national Bank as an IT officer.Currently I am posted in my home city itself. However,I feel sometimes that I made the biggest mistake of life by leaving Infosys.you miss out on your friends and good times you have with them. Money wise my current job is not bad. I mean, being a scale one officer,I earn enough and this year the pay revision is expected to be announced for Bank personnel. So if a person is earning 31,500 monthly gross at present will see his income shoot upto 43 or 45000 after pay revision. My Gross monthly is 31,500 as a Scale-I officer. Since I am under probation,I am not eligible for Petrol and Mobile allowance. If I stay in Bank, then from April 2014,another 4,500 will be added to my salary after my probation is over. Then as I stay in my home towm, I miss out on 8000 monthly rent allowance.Instead I get 1300 pm. So If a scale one officer resides in other than home town, his salary is easily 38-40,000 under current pay contract(expected to be revised and will be implemented from 1 Nov,2012,i.e., even if I resign in June this year,i will get arrears of additional salary as per new pay revision from 1 nov,2012)...........Salary wise this thing is less that IT jobs, but still not very bad. The biggest turn off in my opinion is a 6 day week. Saturdays are not off here. You should tae any decision wisely. This is what the Infy HR told me. And now I feel he was right.

Reading your case, I am puzzled as to why you want to leave Wipro and go after Bank(in additon to looking for MBA).........BTW,I am also looking for MBA.
