I would advise you to go out looking for that off-campus job. Float around your resume to your friends/acquaintances and go on a rampage as far as networking is concerned.
As far as MBA season 2011 is concerned, yes it is certainly over, unless you have already appeared for some examinations this year and have got/expecting some GD/PI calls.
You should find a job. I would strongly advise against preparing only for an MBA for more than a year.
You may try the following if and only if the above doesn't work out. Try working for an NGO along with your MBA preparation.

Rather it would be an advantage in the GD/PI provided you can show them the knowledge and passion for whatever you do. In today's time every 2nd person appearing for GD/PI is an engineer and most of them are working in IT. Its good to be different mate. 😃
I am a 2010 BE pass out and working in TCS for the last 14 months...Not finding the IT job interesting enough and appeared in CAT and a few other MBA exams in 2011...Managed 96.53 %ile in CAT but din't get any calls as had not applied to any college other than IIT Delhi & Kgp...Now, I also had appeared in Staff Selection Commission, conducted by UPSC in 2011 and cleared the written exams and the final result post interview will come in March...I am pretty sure of getting the post of Income Tax Inspector through it which I am surely going to join in order to escape from IT...
Now, I will be taking MBA exams again...I want to ask that is this fluctuation going to create problems during GD PI, in case my score can fetch one? Engineering> TCS(Prtivate)> Income Tax Inspector(Government)> again aspiring for MBA(private)....Or, this will somehow add diversity to my profile given that most of the ppl applying for MBA are from IT backgrounds...

1) Will this add diversity to your profile? Yes, for sure. 2) Will it create a problem during GD/PI? Entirely depends on how do you justify your career switch to the panel. Be mindful of the fact that before even trying to convince the panel, you should be able to convince yourself now. If not, then probably you need to re-evaluate your options.

To answer the second part of your query (first has already been answered), any full time work-ex of more than 6-8 months is taken into account by all the b-schools in India.
There is not a particular type of extra-curricular activity that can help you to boost your profile. Anything that interests you, can be chosen
I want to do a certificate course on MERGER & ACQUISITION by distance mode from ISBM. Is Indian school of Business Management (ISBM) is reliable & AICTE approved? Also suggest names of other good colleges for the same course.
Hey, this is for my friend actually, she is trying to do a course in jewellery designing after her UG, I need info on some colleges where this course is available.
Although most of you are in dilemma; i would like to share my dilemma too..!!
I gave CAT -2011, but was not able to land on any good B-school.
My profile is as follows : Class 10- 88 % Class 12- 93.4 % Graduation- B.com (hons)- University of Delhi- 74 % ( in third year right now )
I want to do M.B.A only from top colleges that is IIMs or XLRI.
I am ready to work hard for that..
But my problem is if i drop for a year, then will it effect my profile that badly or not..
I am thinking to do certification courses ( NCFM ) also, just to enhance my Profile..
Please tell what should i do ??!!!!
should i do a job ?
Although not placed till now, but it will not be difficult to land in a small firm or a KPO ( because my interest is job of Research Analyst )..
Please answer Back !!
Thank you..
It is always good/safe to have work-ex under your belt. Even the preparation for IIMs/XLRI doesn't call for full time preparation for 6-8 months. You should be able to manage both job and preparation. NCFM certifications can be done, but doing only that can never compensate for a full time work-ex.
Preparing only for CAT/XAT/SNAP for the entire year without working/studying comes across as a big negative during the second stage of the selection process which is the GD/PI round.
Most of the top b-schools consider work-ex of atleast 8 months duration, else the candidate is given no weightage for work-ex.
The third option looks the most viable. Have full time work-ex of atleast 1 year and prepare simultaneously/appear later for CAT.
Hope it helps. ATB
Thanks for your suggestion..what else i want to ask is that even if i go for cat'12 then also the work exp that i'll be filling in the application form will be hardly 2-3 months . wat's your say on this?
Another thing is that if i go for NGOs then will it score a negative point for me? as i am a B.E. ? This is my biggest dilemma..joining an NGO..i fear if that will change my career path completely. are there any people who leave their core competency and switch to other sector and then after taking an exp of a year, go for MBA? Will my changing the career path diversify my profile and help me score better than the rest IT guys or create an altogether negative impact for my career? Please help me with it!
I'm presently pursuing my B. Tech(I'm in my final year now) and my problem is that I have an abysmal academic profile weighing down heavily against me.
B. Tech - 68% XII - 73% 10th - 90%
For all I know, I had become careless and lazy with my academics after my 10th, only to realize its cost now. I think I'm fairly good at aptitude/logical/problem solving etc. I'm confident I can get a good %ile in CAT with a little prep. I also think I'm considerably good at G.K and current affairs as I find a lot of interest in that. But my carelessness in XII landed me in a not-so-good college with no exposure whatsoever.
Assuming I build up work-exp for 2 or 3 years, what are my chances of getting calls from good b-schools?
Hi I am in a lot of dilemma & continuous thought process... I am a B.Tech - 2008 pass out & after that constantly working with reputed IT company in India on a senior software engineer role. I feel kind of stuck in my role & for growth perspective I want to pursue MBA. As I have nearly 4 years of experience I am only looking for executive MBA courses. 1) I am confused about taking CAT or GMAT - I am interested in colleges in india but can go abroad for study too if didn't get a seat in india as I want to finish my MBA before the age of 28. I want to do MBA this year only i.e. 2013-2014. Kindly suggest me few colleges which accept less than 5 years of work experience & also if CAT is better in my case or GMAT... Please suggest.. Thanks.
