hi sanjay kumar,i just want to ask as people generally write cat with continuing their respective jobs..can i write cat 12 while already doing my mba 1st year from a little known college...as i belongs to nc obc category i would target these colleges- iim c,l fms delhi iit b iift nitie... hope this time my language is not arcane to you..thank you!!
Yes,you could surely write CAT while doing your MBA from any other college. I know a lot of people who during their 1st year of MBA from a good/average college prepared for CAT and wrote that again. Some of them have really made it to IIMs/IITs and lot others top B-Schools.So,I see no harm in preparing for another year if you're not satisfied. But then you've to face this question in your interview and you have to convince them regarding the same. Sanjay kumar VGSOM 2011-13

actually i really wanted to go to iims but after a detailed study got to know that even this year i clear the cutoff of all iim's excluding a,b...in my category(nc obc)but it was my low acedmic performance which thwarted my dream... 10- 66.17 (2004) 12-55.54 (2006) b.tech-67.2 (2011) so just want to know that the college i mentioned hopefully wl not do the same with me..thnx in advance!!
I am currently pursuing Chartered Accountancy and Company Secretary finals. I am very much interested to crack MBA in IIM's or one of the top B schools. I haven't started preparing for CAT. I am 23 years old. It takes one year for me to complete the courses already I am in.
Can any one give me guidance for planning my career to get into IIM's or B Schools? If possible, give me best coaching institute in hyderabad for CAT coaching? Is it compulsory to have work experience to join into some prestigious institutes?
It would be very helpful for me if anyone replied on my questions. Thanks in advance.

Kindly Advice me in this regard or do i have any other options to do while i am idle preparing for the tests.??

Hi Balna
You seem to have a great profile, however you can visit this thread of
to get an idea on the kind Job/Extra curricular you can develop during your preparation time as you interact with other aspirants. Though this thread is targeted specially for ISB, you may still want to go through it to get some exposure as you apply for B Schools.
Also, this : Ask a Consultant might give you some pointers as well.
I am final year student of B.tech Computer Science , my brief profile is as folllows.
X : 82.4 [ CBSE] XII : 82.4 [CBSE] B.tech : 74.0 [ Upto 7th sem from UPTU ] Work ex : NIL [ Fresher ] JOB in hand : Infosys [ Through campus recruitment ]
I want to do MBA from any of the top 20 institutes of PG list of most preferred institutes.I have not wrote CAT before and haven't yet started preparation for the same .
here are some of my queries :
Q1 . In case I join infosys this year and appear for CAT '12 and manage to do fare with the exam then with this sort of profile do I stand any chance of getting calls from renowned institutes of India like IIMs , XLRI , NITIE , FMS , MDI ...??
Q2 . Should i wait for some years to begin my MBA journey in order to obtain some work-ex ..if so then how many years of work ex would suffice ?? Is there anything like that freshers are not preferred over experienced people during placements.?
I am in great dilemma these days unable to figure out what to do in this situation...expecting some .
I am in a very big chaos in my life right now and I need some perspective on what other's think of this position.
I passed out with a B.Tech degree from Indraprastha University, Delhi in 2010 with approx.70 % overall and got placed in HCL Tech in campus only. The profile offered(forced) on me in HCL was Presales(Bid Management & Business Support) as a fresher. This role is a managerial kind of role with always Management trainees being a part of it but 2010 was an experiment for them.
Since being a fresher and beggars cant be choosers, I started working in this environment and its the 22nd month as I write this. I gave my MBA entrance tests in 2011 and wished to pursue MBA this year. But as things turned out, I got approx. 77 percentile in CAT and same is the case with other exams. I didn't get a single call from any institute and here I am with my list of problems:
1. At this time, I am not able to switch to a better job as my profile seems complicated to the recruiters as being a engg. grad, I did a MBA kind of role and also my current role is very generic and I dont have any expertise in any domain.
2. I dont know why I want to do an MBA: I have a technical bent of mind and I think that if I get a good job where I can gain focused expertise in one domain and think of MBA later ( maybe 5 years from now). I dont have any solid reasoning why I should go for a MBA and only things I can think of is more money( if I get into a grade A college)
3. I switch my job from HCL to another high profile co. and till the time I will settle in the new company, I study hard for CAT/GMAT and give me exams once again.
4. People are telling me that MIS from a good foreign University is also good, although I dont really understand what kind of job I will get, but thats also a possibility.
So as you may think that I am one of the most confused guys ever, but this is the story of my life and I would request everyone to please spare some time and reply and help me.

Hello shashank, Look i am a final year guy myself, but have been at PG long enough to help u a bit here!!:) First of all buddy there is no problem in your profile and trust me you are at a better state then most(in short its good!!) Secondly ,there is no reason for the top institutes not to give u a call if u get a high percentile(u may face problems only at maybe IIMA,IIMK,because of their stress on acads, but rest all are in. Thirdly, since there are many freshers doing a MBA course in all the reputed indian schools(including al the top ones you mentioned),so you should realize that infact there is no set perfect time to do an MBA.To explain it more let me give you a scenario, lets say you want to do an MBA after two years of workex, but get a 99.98 percentile()next year itself, will you not go for the colleges you will get??In all probability you will!!! But even then 2-3 years of relevant work-ex is looked in good light. You will also be eligible for lateral placements(which are for guys with work-ex) if you have more then 22 months work-ex.So relax dude, there is not much need to worry. If you have really decided to go for an MBA then give your best everytime you sit for n entrance test.CAT is unpredictable buddy,so anytime u get a seat at a coveted B-school,don't miss your chance!!!cheers:grin:

Hey i really understand that you are confused dear. But i would just like to say something.See in your first point you have said that its difficult to get a better job.But then again in the third point you say that you can switch to a better(high profile) company. Then coming to the MBA thing,if you are not really sure about an MBA i suggest you to talk to some students or relatives who you may know.see MBA is a big decision(there is lots of money you need to invest)and if you are not really sure what you expect from an MBA then it would not be the right thing..
Now this is my personal take.. If you want to do an MBA now itself, then a 2 year course would be great for you.Start preparing for it now and give it your best shot(22 months of work-ex is optimum) If you think you need some time to ponder over this deciision and want to for it after 5 year of work-ex ,then i think 1 year MBA course would be better suited to you. So think wisely and decide

I am working in infosys for the past 13 months...my bond will be over by august 2012.i dont want to work here anymore but the thing is i am bonded by a contract. I just cant work here after august. But i am in a big dilemma , I dont know what i'll do after august..I dont want to join any IT company in near future. Please suggest what should be my course of action considering the fact that i'll leave this job after 3-4 months. My profile is as under :-

hi I appeared for CAT11 and Managed a decent percentile.. my acads are almost similar as urs.... and thus i want to share it with u.. but first your questions.
most Bschools dont really have a criterion for workex (or lack thereof), if u have u are questioned on workex if not ur interview is acads based (operations at spjain will be a prob without work ex).... but yes lateral is for people having work ex so that might be there...
secondly loads of ppl that come to these interview belong to TCS, Infy, accenture (u get my flow right)... in fact they are huge in numbers... again, in most Bschools u choose specialization after a year so there is no issue... even in spjains loads of IT ppl convert marketing ops etc.
thirdly bout ur profile.... this might seem harsh... firstly i will share mine
10=90.2% 12=85.0% grads=7.71 cat%ile =99.04% category=general Girl. so with this profile i had calls from IIM L aqnd new ones only. PRoblem areas IIMA: ile obviously and (something else was also there 12th or grad) IIMC:: the %ile (99.50 and above) IIMB: its either 12th or grad score IIM K: 12th IIM S: grads IIM I :: god only knows apart from this i had call from all the other top 20 of pagalguy list PS> i take ur a boy so IIML was above 99.4 or so for general guys...
i know i didnt give out any advise but i hope maybe i managed to make scenario little clearer... hope i helped..
I applied to the following colleges.. IIT R, DSE (MIB & MHROD), DFS(MBE & MFC), KJ SOM(PGDM), BIM Trichy, NIT Trichy..
I converted DSE.. but i am apprehensive about the placements and also a word by many that it isn't something like a typical B-school, which I am looking forward to.. Since I am from South India, I am looking to study in a campus that has hostel too.. Of the options I have.. I am looking forward to BIM Trichy and NIT Trichy.. How good or bad are these colleges compared to DSE.. I know comparisons are a no-no here.. But given my situation, what do you think would be the right option for me? TIA 😃

Piyush, you've an excellent profile. It doesn't make any sense to go for any lesser known B-Schools this year with that profile.I'm not very sure if you could really get the expected profile and package from MIB. I would suggest you to go for next year's CAT/XAT.CAT results may be unpredictable but it still is a safer chance then joining a B-School which you know for sure can't match your expectations and profile. Just came across this thread... and i need some opinion...
This is my profile
10th - 77.20% 12th - 79.83% BE (Electronics and Telecommunication) - 64.25%
I had a disastrous season so far, CAT - 82.94% CMAT - AIR 2770
I have got calls from XIME, IFMR (results awaited), TAPMI (results awaited) and K J sommaiya (International Buisness)- (results awaited).
So far i have converted XIME - Bangalore. I am a fresher and I am not so sure about the Tier 1 or Tier 2 B-schools. So i am in a dilemma as to should i take up the XIME or any other offer this season or wait for another year..??? I have already spent one year at home after my graduation!!?? as such i cannot continue this.. Taking up job now will be difficult for me because my graduation aggregate marks are not upto the mark as well :(
So my question is should i take up the XIME bangalore offer?? can you please tell me among my calls which colleges at least belong to Tier 2?? Also i am interested in doing finance?? So what is the dream profile for an MBA finance aspirant?? which among the above colleges will help me achieve it at the earliest??
Thank you for taking your time to think about my situation. It is appreciated 😃

TAPMI, KJS, IFMR are really good. Wait for their result. If interested in finace,u should go for IFMR. fees is a little high though.

Look buddy comparison of colleges is not really allowed, but i wouldn't rate NIT Trichy too highly. But BIM trichy could be a good option if you are from south.U can go for it.Also KJSOM and MFC/MBE are good options, but comparing these courses can be tough.Simply because they offer so much different things.See MIB offers great ROI,so if you are really wanting not to spend anything in your MBA studies,MIB is cool!!!You might miss a b-school culture there, but can enjoy the DU culture(just ask any delhite an he would tell you how different and great that is).You need to work out what is the thing you would want from an MBA.So in short, personally i would say that there is not much to choose between all your choices as all of them have some USP or the other.

I would advice you to take up SIMSR(IB) or TAPMI if you get it!!!I would not rate XIME very highly, but it can just be a decent option considering that you don't have a job.Buddy i could have honestly advised you to wait one more year for CAT(if u don't convert ur other calls),But see CAT is damn unpredictable thing and sitting at home and not having a job is never recommended!!!Well if somehow you could land up a job, then the case might me be a bit different!! PS:Make some enquiries about XIME with the current students and check out the profiles offered. That may help you make a decision.
