Hi Merlyn,

Even I cleared the PGCBM test from IIM Indore. Heard its been postponed to Nov, not sure about its value as its first time from Edulive. Have u joined it.

Hey,

I hve enrolled for PGCBM - IIM Indore & XLRI as well. Cleared the test by Edulive - IIM Indore technology partner, got a call to pay the 1st installment. Yet to pay the 1st installment though... Dont have much idea about the amrket value.
There seems to be no classes for this course, u can sit at home & learn via video conferencing??
Pls suggest if this would be a better option or to wait for the XLRI shortlisting.

Regards,
Merlyn.

@saumya
Since you are already stressed, I suggest for career prospects (specially in banking) do the DBF (Diploma in Banking Finance) from IIBF. The next exam is in June 2012 giving enough time to prepare.

The advantage is three-fold:

First, (i) the exam is totally objective type so comparatively easy to prepare &qualify;, (ii) it is not a heavy load , paper is totally from only three books prescribed by IIBF. Each of the book is about 300 pages only, one of them is "Accounting and Finance for Bankers", the others are "Principle and Practices of Banking'' and "Legal Aspects of Banking" - all of which are based on B.Com subjects;

Second, you get lot of weightage for DBF in banks interview for PO. The moment you join any bank the DBF will get converted into JAIIB - a respected professional qualification in banking (automatically on applying after getting the membership of IIBF!). Moreover, on just joining a bank in the next Dec/Jun exam after joining the bank, i.e. within 4-7 months depending on when you join, you can clear CAIIB (otherwise you will need minimum 14-18 months to clear both after joining the bank);

Finally, (the most advantageous one) all banks (except a few small private banks) give one increment each for passing JAIIB and CAIIB so you will get two increments within 6-8 months of your joining a bank, first within two months and the next from the date of passing CAIIB.

As for B.Coms (and now for many MBAs) banking is one of the most preferred careers - this strategy will not only make you better equipped for it due to having a professional qualification in Banking when you are in final year of B.Com , with only a little extra effort, but also will give substantial financial gain almost immediately on joining the bank (by getting two increments for ever within 8-9 months of joining the bank). Rest is your own judgment, best wishes.

CAT 2011 is here and much is already being talked about it. However, I am an exception.

B.Tech passout of 2009, I have been working for the past 2 years. I was sure to give CAT this year with full prep. On 5th of May, just 4 days after I started prep, I had a major accident. I was in coma for exactly 43 days and post that was heavily on medications and plasters. As my limbs had been bruised, I was virtually a vegetable lying on my bed incapable of any movement. 2 days ago on the 25th, I had the plasters removed and I feel good now.

Certainly I lost my job, I also used up a lot of my father's money(which isn't much in first place) but the dream for CAT and other exams is still on. I know it may seems as a joke to many of you when I ask this, but is a 20 day window a sensible time period to prepare well for CAT? I know most of you would say I shouldn't hurry and give it next time around or I should be thinking about other exams too. I agree with you folks, but it's a little difficult to explain to you all the crunch that I am going through.

I am not here for sympathies or miracles, but maybe for some courage and facts about CAT and it's prep. I can put in about 350 hours of dedicated prep. This is inclusive of study, mocks, etc. I don't know my strengths and weaknesses yet. Like any other guy, I aim for the top-20 B-Schools. How can I go about the prep in a smarter way? My acads are 94 in 10th, 84 in 12th and 72 in B.tech and that's not so great I guess.

Moderators and administrators, please be merciful for allowing this thread to be open for 2-3 days. Thanks is the least I can say to you and to anyone else who can help me!

Sorry to hear that....
Is 20days preparation enough or not i dont know.... but you have nothing to loose.... Put your full efforts and i wish u succeed.
There are many people who belled the cat in a few weeks preparation.
Good luck!!! All izz well....

Hey Abhay,

You have nothing to lose. Trust me, 20 days are enough for you to score 95+%ile (and who knows 99%+ depending on the day). Moreover, the recent change in pattern is a boon as there is nothing called time management now. It's more about focus and knowledge in that section.

Let's see how you can pull it off: (Well, I am already done with CAT this year and have already taken it a staggering five times, beat that, so you have reasons to believe me)

1. Take a mock asap ..I am not sure about the mocks this year as I didnt take a single one. I would suggest taking the last from TIME or CL.

2. Analyze your grey areas. Divide it this way -

Section 1:

QA - Attempts, Corrects, Time taken per q., max. correct in which topic, max. correct which you were sure of, max. wrong because of half knowledge

same for DI..

See, I think you need to be smart here; DI just needs a weeks' practice; remember the exam is not about speed anymore, but about your ability to choose right questions first and then move on to speed breakers..

I think you should focus on number systems, Algebra (including log, set theory), Geometry, as historically thse sections have captured >90% of QA..

Since section 1 is QA and DI, let's assume the break up is 20 Q + 10 D.. I am sure the above topics would contribute >16 qs. in Q and out of 10 DI , you can solve 7 (leave the toughest set) .. I think you surely manage 10+ in Q.. so 17-20 attempts... Believe me, no matter what people say 17 correct attempts will land you 92+ile in this section any freakin day..

For VA + LR .. again let's say the break up is 20 V + 10 LR... dude, the section starts and you go after LR .. solve 10 and get atleast 8-9 on the board... you can do that, trust me easily.. for this i ll suggest you solve previous year FMS papers.. the LR in FMS is pretty standard and I think that wl be a good practice .. solve 3-4 sets a day.. (I sure there would be better resources: this year mocks may be, but i suggest dnt aim too tough)

VA - practice 3 RCs a day.. PM me your mail id ... I ll send you a wonderful book for RC i used for my GMAT prep.. it has 99 RCs with 33 in each difficulty level..

practice other verbal stuff PJs, FIB, Grammar, Para completion (dnt spend too much time on grammar, vocab, return is very low)

Your focus should be RC, PJs, Para completion, LR dats it.. 92+ile here easily..

overall score would be 95%ile easily

I think preparing is one thing, you need to be smart in your school selection as well.. Hope you are getting that right... post the list here and PUYS would help you... it's our mission man, to give back to the community..

Thanks! Hope I could be of help!

tk cr.. nd dnt put too much at stake...dnt exhaust urself before CAT.. nd ofcourse fill a lot of colleges... I think MIB at DSE is a very good option.. cheap and very good college..

Cheers!

Well first of all you should do away with all the things that had happened to you.This is the half battle won.Now coming to prep..if i have to devise a plan that would be something like this:

1. Brush up all QA basic concepts from any standard book.(Considering 2 chapters per day then 10 days at most)
2. Solve DI-LR basic questions from whatever material you have (10 sets per day)
3. For VA, start solving previous CAT Papers(1999-200(10 paper for 10 days)

Now after completing everything for 10 days...
1.Do 10 MockCats for next 10 days ..analyse it properly..see which concept u need to revisit again.(You can increase the number if you are comfortable may be 2-3 mocks per days)

Well..that's it..now don't waste your time..stick to the plan and certainly you can score anything over 90%..be confident and bell the cat

Best of luck!:cheerio:

hey abhay ...
i can tell you that 20 days is enough if you can identify the type of questions (pattern)and revise the related concepts from the last 10years of cat...Arunsharma last years papers book can help you with that but explanations arent good tho.....you dont have the time to sit and study new concepts..so some of the PG forums can can help you with that ...

some of the questions get repeated every year...so identify them and study the methods..also there are loads of content in online sites for free...this will help you narrow down your prep so that you dont waste time on unwanted areas...
