u can definitly get in top b school provide u have a superb cat score!!!!!!!! colleges like mdi,xl.fms and iits does nt have much preference to past acads too!!!!!!!

Hello,

I was just wondering how bad it would look on me, if I take a two months break from my career? I am currently 24 (soon to be 25) and have 22 months of work ex.

I plan to travel during those two months; however as it is, I am scared to take a massive decision like this. I am working in a MNC currently, and it's really taxing my brain every time I think about my travel plans, leaving my job.

Primary concerns are:

a) Leaving comfort zone and venturing out purely for my pleasure and no motivation for working in NGO/Volunteering activities. In other words, it's going to be a heavy-duty travel only!

b) After coming back, how do you think employers are going to view me? Would I face some major challenge in getting employed again? (Since I would be using time, not for something which is seen "productive" by 99% of career oriented mindset). After two months of travel, obviously it would take few more days to appear for interviews and hunt for a job. So overall, I am expecting at least 3-4 months gap in my resume!

Kindly pour all your suggestions! (Anyways, my dad would get a heart-attack if I ask him this q! )

Puys, please HELP!! am in a huge dillema. ve converts from imt-g (hr) , scmhrd and few others like TAPMI. was dinged by XL yesterday, and suddenly, i dont feel 'okay' with the options that i have right now. There is a small part of me, that wants to live another season coz this was my 1st real attempt ever.So far, so good. this is not even the begining of the problem!:P I am a 2011 b.tech passout, and jobless to be true. i can always show up my family work ex in interviews , but its not something that i want to stick to ,forever. Opinions, please. iS CAT 2012 , a really bad option, right now? The fact that i am jobless, haunts me in my nightmares, but cant just let go of my iim/fms/xl dreams. Please reply.

You're a Jamshedpur(steel city) guy and you still are talking like this :nono:
Dude,if you are not satisfied with what you've got,go for another shot.If you think you're made for IIMs/other top B-Schools,give it a solid fight. But the the only problem(major one) I find is, you still doesn't have a job. So,I would suggest you to get a job first and then simultaneously prepare for the next Year's CAT/XAT.Believe me,preparing for one more year without job could really hamper your preparation psychologically and you could not really give your 100%.
PS:I still believe Scmhrd is a good college and so you have to be very sure about your preparation level before leaving this college.
PPS:I'm from jamshedpur only and so got a bit senti :)

CAT 2011 was a complete disaster.

Currently I am working for a small outsourcing company based out of pune deployed at a client location which happens to be a major healthcare company ..Domain of my work being business analytics..

Now going by my past CAT experience I barely got any time for preparation which resulted in an abysmally low percentile.Since I want to get through a decent B school in 2013 at any cost I have decided to quit job in Aug and prepare full time.By that time my work - ex will be of 23 months. However the dilemma that I have is Can quitting the job go against me in the interviews?I am aiming to get through the top 25 b- schools at least.

Had I been at your place, I would have avoided quitting a Business Analytic job which differentiates your profile from any other typical IT Job, that too with a 23 months exp - specially if you feel your acads are on the lower sides.

Moreover, CAT in its online version has really become unpredictable , as you might have already experienced. The point is ensuring focused CAT studies without work load is no more a guarantee for a stellar percentile! & even if you get a 99%ile, Acads play a major role in all the calls these days.

I would suggest start with the test series/ online mock tests & see if you could juggle work with CAT prep or take long leaves, that should work for you. However, if you are confident that quitting the job is the only thing which will help you get into a good B School this year, do it but with a back-up plan in hands!

I will fall under OBC-NC, right now got admissions from MHROD(DSE) and waiting list in MIB(DSE) W/L-9 and BIM Tirchy W/L-23(TN-MBC) as per trends converting BIM Tirchy is difficult but for MIB(DSE) i have a fair chance. My problem is choosing MHROD if i am not getting MIB or BIM, i don't interest for HR since MHROD is a specialist course for HR. Can i go forward to write CAT 2012 if i don't convert MIB or BIM or proceed with MHROD?
Since i will have a work ex of 40 months during 2013 admission will that be problem?

Can some one pls help me out in this??

HI mates,

I am not having any worries.I have certain dilemmas which I need to clear. First of all, I am a two plus year IT Exp guy working in a Reputed Institution. I tried for CAT last year but didnt end up getting good colleges. Missed some colleges by whisker in other exams. Inspite of all these things, I accidentally entered one of the best projects in the company. Currently working as BA in Retail practice team of TCS. I have more interest towards SCM and now working in promoting a product developed by TCS and roles are really good. I am doing market research , COmpany research, Presales stuff, Retail analytics and other works related to Merchandizing solutions of TCS .

Now, the dilemma is I seriously want to give one best shot again in Exams this year .But the prob is as of now I am too busy with project works, loads of responsibilites but I love it.

Wat will be the best suggestion for me?? Give one more year for best shot or prepare for GMAt and try for isb and other good colleges after gaining some considerable exp. Note: my business profile has resumed only four months before and prev i was working in Technical. i am working along with top B school passed outs now. Doing post MBA stuff.. Also I have my own startup concern which is getting slowly active.

suggestions are welcome. I am not a ninety nine percentiler. I have a thought in my mind like even if i go for two year MBA We will end up in Same work culture as My IT exp is increasing. is it true??

Your 40 Months of work-ex won't be any problem.
With 28 months of work-ex,I'm not sure if mhrod/mib would be a good choice for you.You deserve something better.Try for next year's CAT :)

Do you plan to return to IT after your MBA? If yes, then the work which you will do post-MBA will be very much similar to what you are doing now. But if you plan to get into SCM, Fin or Marketing jobs then go for a 2 year MBA from any of the Tier I B-schools. And you don't need a 99.xx to get into all Tier I colleges.

Again if you want to start something on your own, I would really advise go for an MBA. It helps.

ISB - A really tough nut to crack but worth every bit.

Just my 2 cents, I myself worked for 4 yrs in one of the top 3 IT companies before joining XIM last year.

Very confused what to do..Not having confidence looking at my CAT 2011 score whethere I can get good score in CAT2012. Also NITK is not that much good for a guy with 30months of work ex.

At the same time getting bored of so called Information Technology..every day come to office, do coding(including documentation) and go back home....

For how many times have you given CAT? Was this a serious attempt?

I had scored 58 percentile when I had given CAT for the first time in my final year engineering. Then I gave once more, I scored 88 percentile last to last year.

Then I studied a bit more seriously and got 96.3 percentile in CAT last year, 93.15 in XAT and a good NMAT score ( which got converted eventually). I was working and also had 4 yrs IT work-ex. My percentiles were not that great but was enough for me to get out to do my MBA.

Hope you get what I am trying to say.

Hi Puys,

I thought a lot before posting this.

Firstly my profile:

CAT' 2011: 97.70
Class 10: 87%
Class 12: 87.40%
B.E. (Civil Engg): 79.49%

Now So far I have joined IMT-G (Fin) and waiting for IIM-I and 6 new IIMs final results. I have an experience of 30 months in Civil Engg Consultancy (Operations).

I am really concerned whether I should go for IMT-G (if nothing positive turns out) or leave the prospect of CAT, as even with my best prep and a pretty good exam I landed up with this score so I can't take the risk again.

Again, post MBA, my choices are a) Consultancies, b) Finance Domain, c) Marketing.
Suggestions Intended.

I have Fore School of management as also other converts.I have planned to join Fore or wait for upgradation in IMT.And then take CAT again in college.I have made up my mind to take admission this year.Because I am from Polymer field, that also doesn't sound good for doing job in that sector for 1 more year and seeing the high unpredictability of CAT,I am planning to at least secure myself. What say.Correct me if I am wrong.

IT will not be easy to study for MBA and Take CAT .. You may not be able to do justice to either one of them .. So would recommend to think about whether you are serious about MBA from Fore this year or not .. Also the fees of both colleges is way beyond 10 so again financially it will peg you back even if you leave after 1 year

HI ,

I am a software professional at MNC company from past 10 months .I am planning to do MBA & going for cat Classes too.But felt it was so tough to prepare as there is no time for me these days. Now I am trying to shift my focus to GMAT ,the only reason is it has less competition & it is easy to score .

But unfortunately The CAT coaching is also worst in this institute , At the beginning thought to continue with Cat classes & would attempt for GMAT .But now Iam thinking is it waste of time going for those classes .

My question is:

1) Do I need to go for CAT classes ,use the coaching wat ever given or do I Need to go for any GMAT classes again leave the cat coaching?

2)Can some one tell me how much time does it take to prepare for GMAT?

3)IS gmat easier than CAT ?

4)Is cat prep is helpful for gmat

Can any one suggest me ??????

1) It up to you .. But i would suggest you to join gmat coaching only if you are not good at basics

2)It clearly depends on the candidate. i have seen ppl getting good score preparing for 3 months . Ideally , i would say 6-7 months are more than enough to crack .

3) Gmat math is definitely easier than cat . But verbal will be tough/on par with cat based on your preparation and how comfortable you are with grammar

4) Yes Cat prep is very much helpful for math and RC part of GMAT

good luck !
