My profile is : 10th : 86.4 12th : 87 Btech : 84.3 ( one of the top NITs) , mech. engg.
After graduation i worked in our family business ( manufacturing of rcc spun pipes) and simultaneously was preparing for CAT 11 . Have got admitted into NITIE ( PGDIM) ...
I want to enter into business( something of my own / expanding our family business) post mba after a few years of experience ( maybe) . Please tell me whether or not an MBA from nitie can help me in my desired goals... or should i give it another shot next year and try for iims .... another query in my mind is suppose i try next year, and still end up getting some other iims beside iim abcl , xl .. is it worth a try another year( considering i have a decent option this year??
Nitie no doubt is one of the premier institutes in India .. and specially in SCM ..
Regarding starting a new venture or a expanding the business , yes MBA from Nitie will surely help as i am sure Nitie would have an entrepreneurship cell for their students as most of the good b-schools do .. These cells are excellent opportunity to learn from mentors and meet with budding entrepreneurs and learn from their experiences.. These days Entrepreneurship is a part of MBA curriculum , everywhere , I was a part of such a subject and really loved it ..
Secondly trying for IIMs or XL is concerned it totally depends on you , if you want to do your MBA just from top 5 then why not .. whats stopping you ..
I completed my graduation in 2010 and gave my MBA entrances wiith a not-so-good prep and managed a fairly decent percentile...alas!! I had not filled up forms other than IIM's. So I decided to join the corporate bandwagon and gain some experience first.Again appeared for the exams this season..but couldn't manage that elusive perc. this time...failed miserably at other entrances as well. With almost 2 years of experience now, with a good co. in a not so good profile(technical yes, but dull and not progressive) and wih a not so high flying package, I was convinced that I need to give one last try for myself.Another thing raking up my brain is change of job profile. Well, there are mainly 2 reasons for this line of thought : 1) A good justification during my GD/PI for Why MBA etc.
2) Present job sucks..right now i am in night shifts indefinitely!! Don't know if these will continue till CAT as well. Although I get to study in night shifts but I am aware of the work pressure which builds up during the CAT months and since I had prepared last season And had taken leaves ( called sick for 3 weeks) from office last time along with a bunch of other colleagues( and they got to know this is all due to CAT), i fear that they will pose a problem again this time. Plus we have a lot of technical competence exams coming up in my office in the next 3-4 months and I will need to study for them as well. Will surely take up hours from my studies in office and was wondering that if I need to devote this time in office then why not in a job which I like to work in.
I am really in a dilemma here.I have tried for a job change and I am confident that I will get through the analyst role.My query now is :
1) Is changing the job is justified? ( if I continue with the present one ,will it be difficult to justify in GD/PI considering that i'll be having almost 3 years of exp when I join next year in that same drab profile).
2) Will the adjustment issues in a research / analyst sort of a profile be too much to hamper my preparation? is it justified in these crucial months of April-May? (Inertia Dilemmas)
I apologize for the extremely long post, but I have been restless thinking about it and my preparation is suffering at the end of the day.I know I am looking as a confused soul right now, but doing MBA this year is extremely imp. for me, I won't have another chance...
Please advise..
Replies - 1. Whether u stick with 1 company or shift to other company, whether ur in same profile for 3 years or in a different profile - How does it matter in MBA PIs ? Its ur career, u've made those choices under certain circumstances which u best know & not the interviewer..Pls dont worry abt this point..
2. If ur desperate to shift, u can - max 2 months will be adjustment issues after that u can prepare full-on. Since u've already taken cat u know the nuances rite?
Pls don't be restless overy petty issues. Just do ur work. I would advice u to atleast fill application forms of Tier I and Tier II good instis..
Go only for CFA ( US ). Nothing else ( read CFA by others ) is recognized by top banks/finance companies. Curriculum might be slightly same but the value addition, recognition and learning through CFA (US) is of utmost significance.
If you want to make a career in investment related profiles, there MBA is not mandatory for you. CFA coupled with your current profile can open relevant avenues for you. However, if you wish to go for other profiles, then MBA might provide you slightly more diverse set of opportunities.
Also, MBA will give you the managerial perspective of things as well rather than just the technical aspect which any certificate generally gives.
Hope this helps!
Thank you so much 😃 It was very helpful !!! Now i have one more query.. I am20 and have not done my UG since i took up CA right after i finished my schooling. Now i wonder if CFA will consider my CA or CS as the UG equivalent for enrolling in the course??Pls do let me know . If it does not recognise CA or CS,i will take up Bcom in Madras University through correspondence.
I am facing a serious dilemma right now & would appreciate any help from u guys ..
I am a final yr B.sc student & took the cat this yr .. Reslt was below expectation & scored 89.83 percentile ... Managed calls from SCMHRD, XIMB(HR), MICA bt could not convert... Missed out NMIMS & IIFT calls by whiskers ... Bt later, I converted NIRMA & got waitlisted at TAPMI (I expect a convert) ... I am confused whether to do my MBA from NIRMA/TAPMI or drop a yr & try again nxt yr ... I believe that I can do better nxt yr bt nothing can b said for sure due to unpredictability of the exams .. One more hindrance is my profile which is pathetic : 10 - 70.25 12- 59.60 :banghead: grad - 64.XX upto 2nd yr (Microbiology) Work ex - 0 (no job offer either) I know dat i can get a bttr percentile nxt yr bt my profile may play spoilsport .. On the other hand, I am jst 20 yrs old, so age is on my side ... Also considering the option of joining NIRMA/TAPMI this yr, completing my MBA , getting arnd 5 yrs work ex & then doing another MBA from ISB .. What should I do ?? PLS HELP ME OUT ....

Buddy
Seeing your current profile , i feel that going for MBA this year from either NIRMA or TAPMI is the right decision. Post MBA, as you mentioned, go for work for 5-6 years and then MBA either from ISB or executive MBA from IIM-A/any Ivy League college abroad.
Dropping the year with your current profile might not work out your way even next year.
PS: This is my opinion on the same and what i would have done if i was in your shoes.

You need to be done with your graduation or be in final year of your graduation to appear for CFA Level 1. For appearing in Level 2 exam, you need to be completed with your graduation.
CA or CS wont be considered as graduation and hence you need to go for B.Com as mentioned by you.

As i said the accounting is the first step , so one must understand concepts of financial accounting to move to the next step of understanding concepts of finance I would suggest start off from basics , like reading 11 or 12th class accounting , if one wants to start early
For conceptual knowledge i think reading about the following would help 1.Financial Institutions in the market -Commercial Banks -Insurance Companies -Mutual Funds -Provident Funds -Non Banking Financial Companies 2.Suppliers and demander of Funds -Individuals -Businesses -Governments
3.Understanding financial Markets such as Money Market/ Capital Markets , primary/secondary , debt /equity 4.Understanding financial instruments such Equity Shares, preference shares , debentures , bonds , loans ,Depository Receipts etc One can search on Wikipedia. Investopedia.com for understanding above and NCFM modules can help you with these concepts as well
CFA and NCFM has lot of difference in terms of focus , CFA is something that starts from accounting concepts , accounting principles , and goes into depth of each and every concept, it is a world renowned certification , with an average pass percentage of 30-35%

Its unfortunate that you didnt get through the colleges you mentioned .. For a Non Engg graduate a percentage of 65 is pretty good and secondly if you do manage to get a job after your graduation and prepare then its fine .. But preparation from home adds tad bit extra pressure .. since this was your first attempt i would suggest you should try once more .. an executive MBA after 5 years something nobody can plan , if its supposed to happen it may .. but i firmly dont believe in 5 year plans or 10 years plans as nobody can tell what they will be doing 5 years hence .. and since you are only 20 .. i think you should give it a try for sure ..

I slightly disagree here because: 1. Most of the colleges give higher weightage to 10th and 12th marks, which are slightly on lower end when it comes to 12th. 2. Advantage of being non engineer is there, but when we talk of pool applying to top colleges, non engineers also have high percentage of marks, so 65 is not on higher end or pretty good when compared to pool. All is relative and nothing is absolute. 😃
I am not being pessimistic but just believe that being emotional and leaving what you have in hand is not right. Also, leaving the colleges that you mentioned and then getting into a 15-20 ranked college next year is not wise as opportunity cost of 1 year is high.
And i certainly believe that a person can plan his few years down the line and work accordingly to build his profile and achieve the results he aspired for. It is all about being self confident and working to achieve the same.
However, you have got to know both the schools of thoughts now. Evaluate them and take the decision accordingly.

Yes agreed to a point but a few things .. Opportunities differ in every college so i see it a decision for next 30 years than for 1 year
I have loads of batchmates and juniors doing well with 65% in Engineering ..
And finally about 5 year or a 10 year plan .. I think we have goals but to have plans i disagree , i dont think anyone of us knew we would be doing this or joining this company or joining this role 5 years ago
Though i dont blame anyone my thinking is different , but what works for someone doesn't for other

i just feel i didnt prepare at all and had not given full justice.i planned to take another attempt. I need more time as ma quants skills r patheic. i don find concentration by moving to job and studying. i loose more time. when i sit to study i started sleeping due to tiredness. This affects ma overall morality wth a guilty conscious that i am not giving justice to CAT preprn.I am not interested in joining BIM this year as i want to put my full efforts and then get what i want. I am planning to resign. Am convinced and i am confident of dedicating ample time in ma preprn. Its risk. but whatever it is this is ma last chance in life. i should join MBA next yr whatever it is due to severe constraints. By now i decided, i am apprehensive about ma gap affecting my selection prospects. IS resigning a very bad option. WIll it be a big spoilsport. pl reply this dilemma. i knew its make or break. but i ought to as ma preprn is yet to begin

now it is evident that u dont want this job so badly as u wana study further .. but just in case u dont make it thru this year .. u dont wana wait one more year without a job and prepare again by sitting at home and doing nothing but jus studying .... I agree that along with work prep becomes very tough but if u are very sure u want an MBA then sundays and other holidays can be sacrificed .... focus these precious days solely on prep and not on outings with friends or movie with girlfriends and so on .... study properly ... and just one month before the exam ... make a proper bahana about taking a long leave ... Jaundice o somethin ( fake one ofcourse ) ... detach urself from the world for 1 month , no calls from friends or company people , ask ur family to tell the same wen contacted by ur company people that u r ill and treatment is goin on in other city , even purchase a simcard of mumbai or other city jus for proof ... and study ... give in ur 100% ... After exam is over , tell ur company ur treatment was goin on outside the city with proof ( again fake )... Worst case u get kicked out of job .... thats gonna happen anyways if u resign properly .. end result is same .. u r out of job .... Best case .. u get final warning and u r not paid one months salary or 2 months salary as compensation o something ... but falling ill to some sickness is not in ur hands is it 😉 ..... Just a different suggestion than the conventional ones .... please think abt it seriously ... stupid immature or risky it may seem but certainly not worth rejecting it outrightly ...

Since you need to pay more attention to Sec 2, I would suggest you to go for CL as well. Also, since you are preparing full time, you would have enough time to analyse both the test series.
