1.should i opt for this job or do some course that can increase my chances of getting a job in my domain.

Take the job. But look for more stable options if possible. I don't think any course would help you find a good job. So take whatever you're getting. In case salary is extremely low then chuck it and go for course.

2.if i take this job will its experience be counted during b-schools admission
process(as it is not of my domain and the is with a very small start up company)
bhai the experience will be counted. Even valued. But you're looking in wrong direction. You should be thinking- What will I do in case I don't get B school shortlists. The exam is extremely tough and on top of that random.
What if you don't get a good B-school shortlist for 3-4 years? Will you continue in this company for long term? In case answer is yes, then it's good. Else also think on lines of finding a good stable job.

3. how to pursue mba preparation while continuing the job as the work timings will be leaving me with very little time to continue rigorous preparation
No option other than working hard. I would also suggest you to broaden your horizon in terms of B-school selection. You should look at a wide spectrum of colleges as you're not in position to take risk.

I have completed my B.Tech in computer science this year only i.e in may 2012, n I want to pursue MBA from IIM or sum other very good college. I was placed in two companies on-campus which i rejected. currently I've got a job offer in noida worth 3.5 p.a with a 2 year bond. this cmpny is a very small cmpny with no female employees yet... 😞 and i want to appear for CAT dis year. I am very confused and need some help. what should i do..? do d job for 2 years n den go for MBA or shud i reject dis one too and concentrate on my preparation for CAT 2012...?? bcz i've heard dat once u enter d field,u cannot study,n den u have to go for cmpny MBAs or correspondence MBA etc which i dont want..!!

Every bond is breakable...you just need to pay some money. Again as I said before, what if you prepare and don't get through CAT? You'll be on road- no job...no Bschool. Take a job, prepare along with it on weekends and pay the money to break bond in case you convert a good college. Why complicate simple things?

I've all respect for fellow seniors (esp Satwinder), but I'm speaking from my personal experience - See it's very easy to say that don't join the job and just prepare for CAT with full focus. What do you do in case you don't convert? It's extremely tough. Add to that the pressure you'll have on exam. It'll be a do or die situation. You've risked everything for one day. You get stuck on one q's-you crack down under pressure.
Compare this to-
You've a good stable job. You know you're doing decent enough in office. A pressure situation comes in exam when you were not able to solve 2 q's at stretch- you think to yourself- no issues...i'll give my best. In case things don't work out it's not end of life. I'll succeed anyways.

Do I need to point out which option is a perfect recipe of disastrous life and in which case person will be more successful. Contrary to popular belief, people dropping and going full out on CAT have lower probability to convert than people having a nice stable job who prepare with sincerity on weekends and free time. You can point some exceptions, but those will be exceptions.

1. Profile is not a hindrance in your case. 😃
2. Well, it is very subjective. One can always try to get into colleges that are more known for Operations and Marketing.
3. 5.5 yrs work ex would be hindrance in getting into B2C and few B2B marketing profiles. Won't be an issue for Operations.

MBA is fine if you think that you wish to pursue career in management and have the skills and interests required for the same.

Will suggest not to limit yourself to one or two exams, you should go for entrance exams of all leading B-Schools. 😃

1. Not having a work ex is not a negative. Please remove this misconception. 😃

2. BPO work ex will be counted as valid work ex if you are full time paid employee of the respective organization.

Cheers!

thanks a lot sir for your suggestions.. I am not saying that not having work experience is a negative factor but sitting idle would have been a negative factor.

Hi all
I am a mechanical engineering passout of 2012 batch. I have been placed in infosys and got the letter of intent in dec'11. Now I'm a bit skeptical about joining Infosys due to my mechanical background. Actually I'm inclined towards doing MBA in the near future. Gave Cat last year as well and got a decent score but not good enough. I have converted a few calls but none of these are the colleges that I'm willing to join. So, should I join infosys and give CAT next year? Or should I go for CAT this year only (but I won't have any work ex)? Or should I join one of my converted b schools (my parents are forcing me :-() and then simultaneously prepare for cat and give it a final shot this year?
My profile:
X -86.8%
XII -79.8%
Grad - 66.5%
Cat'11 - 96.xx

Please share your opinion.. I'm seriously confused

I think joining Infy and then simultaneously preparing for CAT is a good option. Can you tell me which are the bschools that you converted? And in any case, its your life and MBA is a big investment, so dont join a Bschool which you dont want to. Especially since you just passed out of college.

Buddy

Instead of looking out for a job that pays well, i will suggest to look out for a job where there can be a good learning in the short duration that you have in hand before you join B-School next year.

This little duration should be encashed in terms of learning that you can leverage during and post MBA. Job that pays well can be earned after MBA during placements. 😃

You can look out for a job either in finance, marketing or Operations as it suits your interest in terms of long term career goal.

Cheers!

Puys!!! Already 27 running. N still preparing for cat12. If not this year, may be i'll take cat13 & if i am too pissed up, may be cat14. Would an age of 28 or 29 running at time of joining a premier bschool prove to be a hindrance towards my selection??

why not keep exec MBA options open as well? you would have better peer learning in a class room of people with similar work ex

Assuming you would get into a premier b-school, it would certainly be disadvantageous during placements as companies prefer younger people. That will show its effect during selection process too. If you have considerable work experience, do go for a specialized 1 yr PGP.

1. Your peers/batch in BHEL will be all B.Tech. You will be overqualified among them.
2. If you join BHEL, you would have wasted (2+workex) years of your life.

However, if you want to pursue a technical career, do go ahead. But it makes me wonder why did you do an MBA?

Hi Akhil..
Bhel is a PSU and you are getting a job in R&D; Domain. On the first appearance it looks lucrative, isn't it?
But on the flip side you have an MBA from A grade college and got a job of consultant which really seems pretty impressing. I have seen people moving from technical to business domain but you're first who wants to go back to technical domain. Anyway, nobody can help you with your choice except you.
You know your pros and cons and your strengths more better than anyone. If you think you are made for technical job, join BHEL R&D; because it is really very good option but you need to seriously scrutinize your mood swing once more because if your mood swings one more time, there will be no turning back.

please help i am working in a PSU since March
.I am on a contractual basis for now and hence aim to write CAT this year and get into a good college for further studies .

The problem is till now , I have not been assigned any significant work here yet as the organisation is big and i am a newbie .

My concerns are about when I move on from here , be it a job interview or college interview , i will be asked what work i have been doing all this while .

Wish to join some skill enhancing courses (apart from the CAT weekend classes I have already joined ) and thus enhance my CV

BUT clueless of what to join ..a programming language ? BUT that wont be considered a skill here we dont do any coding , its a consultancy I am working in .Or a hacking certification ? again sounds useless .Or animation that I am interested in ? But wont be relevant to add to my degree so far .I am a B.TECH in IT .

Please help urgent !

This shouldn't be a prob as long as you are confident about your goals and what exactly you want to do . Not all who work in a organization have a proper allocation of work .. But one thing you need to be careful is not to waste the time you have in your hand . Use it wisely

Wish to join some skill enhancing courses (apart from the CAT weekend classes I have already joined ) and thus enhance my CV
Again it depends on your interest . Do something which fascinates you and something which help you in long run . Dont do certification just for sake of doing .. Lets say you are interested in career in HR/marketing after MBA , learn something relevant to it (Not necessarily a certification).. Develop the skill set in the next 6-8 months . That should help you when u do MBA

Even programming language is good option since you are from IT background in Graduation . But do it if you wanna get into IT after MBA

Good luck !

I have done engineering in Polymer.I do not have much work expe.I did my BE in 2010.My query is that do we requre any work ex for applying to MSc Accounting & Financial Management,MSc Finance,MSc Financial Analysis or Graduate Diploma in Economics from reputed universities like lancaster university.Apart from that, what other needful things are required for that. And how is tha future prospect and placement in such colleges..

MSc programs in UK universities do not require any work experience, but if you have work ex they value it.

UK education scene has undergone lot of changes in recent years. The fees have gone up and the 2 years post study work visa is not there anymore. Also the job scene in UK is very grim. These programs won't have any high value by themselves in India. You will have to pursue some additional qualifications like CFA/CPA/CIMA etc to ensure that you get a decent job in India.

Hi,
I am a 2011 passout chemical engineer working in an IT company :banghead: for the past 7 months.I took CAT 2011... got 91 percentile and applied to a tier-2 coll , converted it...but didn't join as many guys/puys suggested me to take CAT this year...so I have decided to take CAT this year again targeting top 20 b-schools....and by the time I join the coll next year I will have only 18 months of experience in IT(which is not worth mentioning as I am doing all the trivial work in my project).....so will this work experience be useful during the b-schools' selection process and how can I leverage this experience during the placements in the b-schools....also I want to know if this work ex will act as a deterrent if I want to get into any other sector like manufacturing post-MBA.....plz reply......
