Hi, I am a 2011 passout chemical engineer working in an IT company for the past 7 months.I took CAT 2011... got 91 percentile and applied to a tier-2 coll , converted it...but didn't join as many guys/puys suggested me to take CAT this year...so I have decided to take CAT this year again targeting top 20 b-schools....and by the time I join the coll next year I will have only 18 months of experience in IT(which is not worth mentioning as I am doing all the trivial work in my project).....so will this work experience be useful during the b-schools' selection process and how can I leverage this experience during the placements in the b-schools....also I want to know if this work ex will act as a deterrent if I want to get into any other sector like manufacturing post-MBA.....plz reply......
work ex So no worries on work ex, Just prepare well for your CAT .
I passed out in 2009 and am currently having a work-ex of nearly 35 months in a PSU. My package is nearly 12.5LPA with excellent benefits. I gave CAT (first try) and landed in IIM-I. I would like to give CAT one more go (to land in A or C) but am afraid that my work-ex (which would be nearly 48 months by the time I join next year) would seriously hamper my future prospects. To add on to the dilemma, I started giving mock CATs this year with very good results (99.9+ on AIMCAT 1320 and ~98 in two CL exams). So my questions are:
1. Should I go to IIM-Indore this year (considering CAT exam is a shot in the dark)? The batch profile is showing a pretty low work-ex. Will I be in a disadvantageous position there during internship and final placements?
2. If I pass CFA level 1 (I believe level 2 is not available in June) and get an admission in A or C, will it negate the high work-ex disadvantage?-(I am interested in finance)
please puys---i need maximum reply to this most imp q....of my life
i am bphrm grad..hv 3 yrs work exp...ctc 3.3L....had left job last yr...had given..mba exams dis season...dnt get converted nywere...at homw...

Ofcourse, it was the right decision
You should not be aiming anything less than top 20 colleges with 3 years of work ex. And if you are taking one more shot, then depending on your profile, you can further shortlist colleges.
It's no more about just being an MBA, college matter as well
i got 45% in pcm in 12th and 106 in c.e.t.i comes in o.b.c. will i get admission in s.i.e.s. nerul college for mechanical engineering in the year 2012??? please reply
Hi All, I have been inactive in this site for all most 1 and half year as i'm into job in IT field .Life is little boring wanted to continue my higher studies esp. MBA but i'm eager to know the best Bschools which are financially low in fees. Can anyone enlist them with fee structure. waiting for reply.........
Arun Sharma for QA and LDI and CAT500 by IMS for VA.
Then practice by analysing mocks. Getting through CAT just requires you to be strong with the basics so no need to go through LOD 3 of Arun Sharma QA.
Well I feel IMS CAT 500 is the best book for RCs. BEST. It helped me go from single digit VA scores and sub 50%iles in mocks to 99.26%ile in VA at CAT 2010. And once I started doing well, the confidence stepped in, and I did ok this year as well, though much lesser than 99.26 😛

You've a nice job. I really don't know why you want to come to IIMs Also remember mocks are no guarantee for final results

See there are some disadvantages in summers for work ex guys. But you've a different profile and you might even have an advantage in some companies(but definitely a disadvantage in your preferred sector i.e. finance). So lot of it depends. Assuming you don't crack CAT next year, will you be happy in continuing your job? If yes, definitely go for next year. If no, join I. So basically it depends on your risk appetite. If you feel your job is good enough, you should take the risk. Also look at the companies visiting I and see if you'd be interested in them. You need to do some background research and soul searching.
2. If I pass CFA level 1 (I believe level 2 is not available in June) and get an admission in A or C, will it negate the high work-ex disadvantage?-(I am interested in finance)
It will not negate for sure. But what will negate that is a good CGPA. So wherever you join (C or A or I), make sure you're amongst the topper in the batch to have a decent shot in finals for fin companies. Having said that, if you can manage CFA without affecting job and cat prep, do go for it. But CAT prep and your job should have a higher priority and do CFA only if you can find time.

Maybe you should also consider options of MBA from top schools abroad. Or even ISB, where you will be with people of your level of work ex, and its a one year course too
