@saurabh182 said: Is there a point in doing an MBA after 10 years of experience in industry. Particularly when you are already stepped into lowest rung of Senior Management?
@[594424:saurabh182] You can look at programs like IIM PGPX etc. which are specially designed for people with good amount of industry experience.

You can also look at MBA programs abroad where 7-8 years is the norm for a normal MBA.

In case you do not want to leave your job, do look at EMBA programs of leading business schools in India.

Hello PGs..!!!

I am going through some tough time while preparing for CAT 2012 , here is my mental ache which is troubling me a lot and chocking me and my performance .

I have completed my Btech (CS) in 2012 and got placed in Infosys from campus . However business conditions of Infosys are not adorable anymore and as a result of which i got my DOJ in May 2013 so in order to utilize the time period I decided to prepare for CAT 2012 and finally registered myself at CP centre of CL Delhi. Though my previous plans of doing MBA were only after obtaining work-ex of about 2 years.
However since few days I have been in trouble and finding nothing to ease my plight. Here are the things bringing nightmares to me.

1. I have done my B.tech in 2012 and I will be admitted in MBA for session 2013-15 hence there exists an academic gap of 1 yr , will I be considered for admission in top notch colleges ( top 30 pg list ) considering that 1 yr gap..?? . I will be quizzed for sure in interviews regarding this gap and how will I justify it ...( I guess mentioning the true reasons wont be smart thing ?? ).

2. Do people with same sort of situations make it to top colleges ...??

3. This is my first attempt to CAT and I am lacking confidence just because of the fact that I am a beginner and going to compete with the people who have excelled in CAT before and even having some healthy work-ex with them.Practically do I stand any chances ..?

4. And the last pinch is If I don't make it to any of the desired b-schools then i would have wasted my complete 4-5 months and then will have to justify that Gap in the Job interviews which I will be giving for sure in case CAT-MBA thing doesn't go right .

Only few months are left for CAT and can't waste any more time in hurting myself like this . I am in dire need of some confidence in me .
Any help in bringing out of me would be very helpful...

Brief Profile :

X - 82 %(CBSE)
XII - 82 %(CBSE)
B.tech - 74%(CBSE)

P.S
. I know I have made my post too long but couldn't find lesser words to express.

@[551278:shashankbsn] There is no need to panic.

Many people before you have also dropped a year to prepare for CAT.
Mind you some of them left their jobs and prepared.

Prepare hard this year. You have the joining with you in case things don't work out.
In the meanwhile if you feel you want to enhance your profile do some certifications or even find a job post your CAT test date in Oct/Nov. You have four months to the exam, so stop worrying about what would happen in the interviews.
Focus on the written exam

Work exp is not binding for b-schools. Enjoy this time that your are getting for preparation .
Things will work out.
More experienced puys would add to your query.

Frankly speaking being truthful while explaining the reasons for the gap is advisable, I had taken a gap and I did not have to explain much because the panelists never poked around this thing, I felt as if taking a gap to prepare seriously for entrance exams is a valid enough reason for them.

Coming to your issue about confidence, everyone begins as a beginner at some point of time :-P and trust me it is not mandatory that you can't make it to one of the best colleges in the first attempt. Just start practicing with the basics, take a few tests and you may end up surprising yourself. :-)

And about the job interviews, why worry about them so soon, man? Prepare, give the exams and once they are over ask yourself as to how confident you are with the way you taken them. If you don't feel confident enough then maybe as a precaution you can start working somewhere, or take some courses to make sure that your CV accounts for that period.

I think i need some inspiring words or just plain and simple advice now..

i am aiming at nothing less than the top-20..have no work-ex..had a STRING of Near-Misses last year..for placements Google , McKc , and colleges NMIMS n even XL to some extent.

i am giving my all to the CAT 2012 preparation but i am riddled with doubt and anxiety as i see people i know .. starting their jobs or getting into colleges..i have seen LUCK playing a HUGE role in cat...atleast last year...for some people. Till now my aimcats have been varying but they touched 90 above 3rice...but i also had a disastrous one today...hence my unabashed pouring of emotions

I have read in a few posts ..how the performance of people , has actually become WORSE after taking an year off..Is this really as plausible as it seems to me right now ???

This is the DO OR DIE year for me..I will have to take admission into whichever college i get..since this is a PERSONAL dilemma thread i am not hesitant to pour my heart out...
SOME SERIOUS INSPIRATION NEEDED...PLEASE

p.s - also is there anything..i should do differently or just practise more n more ??
@wheresthebell said: Had a STRING of Near-Misses last year..for placements Google , McKc , and colleges NMIMS n even XL to some extent.
I don't want to be handing out too many advises in a day but couldn't help replying to this.
Read your own words first, you know you missed a couple of colleges by a whisker.. First of all you should draw some inspiration from this itself that all you need to make it through this year is just those 1-2 extra marks or percentile points.

Fluctuations in performances will keep on happening, just focus on the highs saying that this is what I can achieve or maybe something even better than this..
A year more of experience won't a guarantee a better/worse result as such, it can go either way and it will depend upon how you perform on that particular day, and you have mentioned results of 5 exams, and I certainly feel that not all 5 can go bad, so back yourself to deliver at least 2-3 good results, 1 or 2 bad days happen to everyone and that is nothing to be worried about.

All you can do in the mean while is to try a few different approaches to solving mocks or sums, then settle down on one way with which you are comfortable and from there on its just practice that is required.

Just a bit of gyaan: From the start itself don't be ready to take admission into any college you get, set a floor limit for colleges below which you won't go and then push yourself to make sure you get into a college you aimed for.

@[243090:nisroms] has already helped you with a list of colleges that you can look for. Just an additional suggestion from my end would be that, if you want to continue with the cafe later, or if you want to go in for some other venture after the MBA, you can focus a bit more on entrepreneurship programs provided by these colleges. It might be a good help for your professional aspirations, plus you already having started a venture might also help you gain some cookie points during interviews for such courses..

@[83412:sb29]hi, thanks for your kind response. To look for any program I would like to first see the placement results post these courses. If a person with salary of 15L+ enrolls for these programs (EMBA or PGPX as you suggested) will there be an RoI commensurate to the investment made.

I agree that MBA degree is not only about earnings but also personality improvement program but net net it fells to the liabilities that I have to be met with an year of salary loss and other family expenses.
Kindly let me know.
hi guys
my profile goes like this,
x 92 % xii 92% B.E mech 82% completed in 09..
In my 3rd year my dad got paralytic attack and my brother got chronic epilepsy all at the same time and it was huge for me. couldn't cope up emotionally. It hit my studies hard and changed everything. I had to stay back home since i could not leave my mother with this. Dint opt for any placements where i will be asked to go out of town. Got myself a job as a site engineer in a nearby steel plant under contract for a meagre pay and 2years went by.Isolated myself from everything. Finally got a little helping hand from some well wishers and when things were looking to cream up i got a disc herniated and i wasn't even able to walk for the past 7 months and am recovering slowly. And i was removed from that project too because of this. I guess i will be better in a couple of months or so , i hope. This has been a complete hell for me , totally demoralised and depressed. I never had any particular goals cos i had the confidence that i can take up anything and get it done. Now it has all but shattered. Having serious questions on what i could do next ?
Want to do an mba albeit am not that much strong in stuff and i need to prep a lot. Can i crack the exams if i start preparing now where i dont even know the abc's. If i couldn't make it this year can i try next year where i will be 27... will that be a appropriate age for a 2year mba ? Will this gap hamper my admissions and will this exp be counted for any after an mba? Any way to come out of this or any other ideas , possibilities ? All i want is an descent job and then go for an emba or a very good mba prog now ?
@pusghatole said: Hi guys , I am Pushkar.. Presently I am quite confused at doing an MBA. I am an Industrial Engineer and worked in power plant Turbine Manufacturing with a very reputed company for 2 yrs. I was earning 4.8L.. But the job was quite frustrating as I was in Production and so I left. I had given Maharashtra CET but didnt score well and now I am getting very low level colleges. Will it be wise to wait for an year and prepare for CAT and do interviewers create a problem on leaving a reputed company for MBA?? the main thing is that i am even confused at even doing MBA... as such my conditions tell me that I should go to whatever college I get, Go for a job and start earning as soon as possible... but it is like i always wanted to do MBA... I am caught in this situation... Shuld I have waited in the job ... I had thought time is slipping and i shuld so MBA asap... but didnt score... guys I need some advice and experiences .. especially of people who have left jobs...fr prep.

Hi Pushkar. You should def not go to whatever college you get. As you told you were earning 4.8L in your previous company. Then what is the use of doing MBA from any college that will not add any value to your profile.

The point is not the package you get after your MBA. But a top B-School is the best place for self improvement. So always keep in mind that you are for your improvement there and everything will automatically fit in place.

So i would suggest you to give another shot at all the exams and give your best. Interviewers might ask you the reasons for dropping. Try to justify it with your aimbitions. All the best.. !!

Hi gokuz. Now don't think on whatever has happened. You can still make everything good. If you start preparing from now, there is enough time left and you can score really well. But that would need a lot of dedication and hard work. Having said that, even the option of emba is good if you want to go for job now. This is something that you have to decide. But yes, if you want to go for 2 yr program, then don't delay. Give CAT2012 a last shot. And the work experience that you have will def help you. You need to prove your work ex relevance. All the best... !!
Please please help out with this problem!
,I had given CAT last year (2011-last year of my graduation) 87 percentile, couldn't get a good college.Iam reappearing in 2012.

what I want to ask is the I am done with my graduation. Iam NOT working.People have told me that you shouldnt be sitting idle (it gives negative points during interview) So a counselor suggested me to do a one year PG diploma in Financial Planning along with CAT preparation.

Will it be helpful?will it be good utilization of one year and something good to talk about during CAT interviews? Please suggest or should I go for an internship with a NGO (which was my plan ) will be of any worth from the point of view of CAT interviews

Buddy

Please take this out of your concern that a drop gets you negative points and hinders you from reaching a top B-School. People with drop have made to top B-Schools and so can you. 😃

You need to score high, perform well in GDPI phase and that should take care of other things. Getting into some other course just for the sake of preventing a gap on your resume wont serve any purpose unless you are really keen to build career in finance.

Also, getting into such course might hinder your preparation and with the time elft now for the exam, it is not suggested to o for anything else that is entirely new and consumes your time.

Having said this, if you feel that finance sector is the one where you finally wish to get into and a course will not hinder your preapartion for CAT and other exams, then you can go for it. But, even if you are 1% not sure, then suggest you not go for it.

However, internship or some work with NGO looks a better idea as it wont take much of your time as well as brings something on table as learning alongwith preparation for exams.

Cheers!

I don't know how to convey, I am really depressed now! :'( I am final year student of btech. Thinking of giving CAT and some other exams. I was in good mood and was doing my preps till today. My parents don't want me to do MBA and go away from them. I am from a small state and there is really very little chance of any company recruiting here as there are very few. So, they know that I will go away from them. My mom was literally crying today for me. I know it's really early to say because I haven't got any seat yet but this has really really shattered my dreams.. My mood has completely changed and I am not feeling like preparing any more. They want me to settle there doing some job. I am really angry and depressed because as I am CS engineer I will have to go to big cities for jobs(even if not MBA) but then again my parents..I don't understand my motive of studying. They are consoling me and telling me to go ahead but I know, deep down their hearts they are crying...I am feeling very emotional.. don't know what I will do... :'(

For PGPX, you may take a sabbatical or education leave. Most reputed companies allow this. EMBA is actually a work-integrated program so there is no need to leave your job.

In case you are looking at a considerable raise in your pay, you should try for top tier MBA programs abroad.

Hi puys,

THIS IS MY 1st EVER POST IN PAGALGUY 😃

I completed B.E.(CSE) in Apr'2010 with 79%. I then completed a "Postgraduate Diploma in Computer & Information Sciences" at Auckland, New Zealand in Nov'2011. I then returned back to India to work but found that I am more interested in doing an MBA. As I had very limited knowledge or interest(unfortunately) I did not want to take CAT. I was job hunting and am now a Customer Relations Manager at a private ITeS firm since May'2012. I am preparing for the GMAT and I intend to take the exam during the 1st week of October. Now after extensive research, I am completely flabbergasted at the plethora of options that a CAT preparation can offer me. Is it too late for me to prepare for CAT 2013 now? In any case, I am sure about taking the GMAT. Also, I am very much interested in IIFT's MBA(IB) program and FMS' MBA. Will be able to prepare for the IIFT exam (which is on December) if I start preparing now? To put it apt, I have put my mind to join an MBA/PGDM of a leadingB-school/University in the following intake(2013) at any cost!

Can you please help me with regards to this? Please give me your suggestions...

You are still not late. CAT 2013 will be too late. So give a shot at CAT2012. There is enough time left to prepare for CAT, IIFT and other exams. All the best. Get back if you have any kind of query. Don't think all these as of now. Just keep the emotions away from your preparations right now. First try to achieve your goal and that should be to get a seat in any of the Top B-School. After that you can decide what to do. All the best.

: Thanks for the reply 😃 How do you suggest I go about the preparation? I think the GMAT verbal is tougher than that of CAT (Correct me if I am mistaken).. Hence, the only concern for me is Quant, DI, Logical Reasoning(DI & Logical Reasoning aren't in GMAT). Is CAT quant more formula based as I have heard the CAT quants are usually tough.. Also, do you suggest I start preparing full-time by taking a break from work or should I work and prepare simultaneously?

@[595055:sk_mdu] 2013 MBA season is so far away. Its not yet late to start prep for CAT 2012. Only thing is you MAY have to devote more time and effort for preparation than others who have started early. Depends on where you stand as of now and which are your weak/strong areas. So the first thing to do would be to give a mock test (Previous year CAT/IIFT paper) and then assess where you stand as of now, and then accordingly prepare a study plan for weak areas and practice for strong area.

And then if you're sure of giving GMAT, then you can target good institutes outside India also (if you can afford it).
