I don't know if there are rumours all around or what it is actually... Some say , if a candidate, appllying for mba and selected for GD/PI , is from top rated colleges with graduate degree, he/she will get extra weightage in the selection process of mba colleges... Is it a true fact ? or only high CAT score and written test scores do matter only in case of GD/PI... I am an aspirant of having MBA. Please reply.
@munmun1 Depends on a college's selection criteria... There are some colleges that give weightage to academic background and extra curricular activities apart from the standard CAT & GD/PI... In such cases the Universities are ranked and the graduation scores are normalized for applicants...

Let them give weightage , let say some people have extra weigtage .. in a similar scenario they may have better cat score or 10, 12th marks or they may be taller , better looking .. or they may have quota ..
One question can do anything to change the situation? If not my friend then please concentrate on giving your best in GDPI or CAT or for that matter for the rest of your life .. let others have their share of luck or bad luck .. please work hard on your skills if your GD and Interview goes well , you will be having a sure short convert no matter what the criteria :)
@munmun1 Don't overthink things fella!! Graduation is done and dusted, nothing that you can change about it... So better focus on what is in your hands right now and start working hard for a good CAT percentile...
How much is the possibility of getting into an IIM for a NON-IIT/NIT candidate??
All depends upon your talent and ability....concentrate on your preps then for GD/PI......if you think that much then the greatest loss will be suffered by Male,Engineer and those who belong to general category......so dont think that much...give your best shot.....
I have also suffered this ....but it worthless to worry...
BTW,I am a male,an engineer and i belong to general category....also...i have left my job...so if i worry that much i will never be able to do anything....
@munmun1 ...What you are matters more than from where you are.... If you have relevant work ex or some other degree then it will definitely give you a better chance than an IIT/ Nit guy. So these thing are just figments of imagination and nothing more
I am a M.Pharm from BIT, Mesra and working in Cipla from July 2012. As I am working in loan licence dept, I am having less opportunity to shift to other companies in future. Also my job seems to be very boring and action less. But I do get some time to prepare for exams and I want to pursue MBA from a std institute. I am writing CAT and SNAP this year. My acads are:
10th: 81.37%
12th: 86.5%
B.Pharm: 84.6%
M.Pharm: 86.5%
CAT/SNAP in 2013 is most crucial for me. I want to know whether having one Masters degree would create any problem in getting a seat in a good institute or getting placed in a good firm after MBA. Also what specialization should I opt for, as my ultimate aim is to join any navaratna, PSU.
@Enduser Well, masters degree won't create much problem in getting through a good b-school but then they(the interviewer) would certainly like to know why do you want to get into management after doing masters in pharmacy. You need to be ready with a good answer and justify the same. Now coming back to PSUs. I don't think they would be recruiting anymore from the campuses this year because of the Madras high court order. If they recruit, its good else you need to apply for the various positions and give an exam and clear the interview. The requirement in PSUs ranges from HR to finance to operations to Supply Chain. So, take the specialization based on your choice and you'll get enough opportunities in PSUs.
@aisling said: I am pursuing my graduation via distance learning as I was working before this..does this cut down my chances of getting into a good college?
Most colleges require 15 years of regular course study (10th +12th+graduation).
Many Institutes offer the flexibility to mba students that students will have General management programme in 1st year. In 2nd year, they will have ample opportunities to choose their specialization. n they can choose dual course, I mean one major and one minor.... Is this applicable for all colleges or some specific colleges? I dont have clear concept on this topic. Please reply with details on curricula .

Most colleges offer electives in the second year. You can choose based on your interest. There is no concept of a major or minor specialization.

This varies from college to college. Either of the following 3 is generally followed:
1. Only 1 specialization depending on the electives you are interested in. 2. One major and one minor specialization.... More electives in 1 area and rest in some other. 3. No specialization offered by college. It provides General Management Degree and you pursue the interest as per the electives taken but no official mention of any specialization in degree/PG certificate. It would say General Management.
@Red_Bull Thanks for answering. Jobs after B.Pharm are of two types. In the production sector, salary is less, while in sales there is very less time left for studies. I got qualified in GATE 2010 and took admission in BIT. The job I am doing right now fetches me an affordable salary and also my job is related to managing the business of Cipla at other loan licence companies that involves quality management, inventory control, supply chain, batch scheduling and all. I do think my experience here is quite suitable for an MBA degree that will provide me better opportunities. Do you think this justification is proper for the reason I want to pursue MBA.This is the real fact also. About PSU, I am considering entry through conventional exam and interview system. Though your information is quite valuable. My query is in which dept the vacancies are more......personnel, marketing etc.
@Enduser Why do you want to get into personnel or marketing? You've quality work-ex in Operations domain and you're suitable for operations/scm profile. There's lot of vacancies in Indian Petroleum Companies like IOCL,BPCL and others related to Operation and other related profiles. I think you've good chances getting into one of these companies.
