@Red_Bull But I have heard that the Operations specialization is best suited for guys from mechanical/electrical background. Is it true? For pharmacy background, is it suitable only on the basis of job ex? Please give me some idea. I am really interested about operations and SCM. Also I want to know about the placement opportunities I can get in operations and SCM from standard Bschools.

Please go through following thread and all the above myths would be clarified 😃

@Enduser Its not about your work-ex only. The main factor here is about your domain knowledge and industry experience. Many IT companies generally comes to B-school for profile like IT consultant but they don't always recruit guys from IT background. The main factor here is the requirement of the company and area of expertise. So, say if some company has to consult a big company who is into mining industry so they would hire someone who has prior knowledge about mining industry and not someone from IT industry.
The whole aim of telling you this was that there's no straight forward rule of selecting a candidates and that depends on a lots of factor other than domain knowledge. So, I think since you've worked in the operations profile, companies won't think twice before selecting you for operations. The work you're currently doing and the knowledge you've gained has more weightage than your background.
Now coming back to placement opportunities in good B-schools. See, apart from profile in operations and SCM, some of the companies also gives profile like operations research. This is purely for people with high aptitude for mathematics and statistics.
@Red_Bull Please refer to my second post. I have told you the reason why I have done M.pharm and why now I want to do MBA. Let's consider by 2013end I'll have 18mths experience in my current job. Do you think from an interviewer's point of view the justification that I've cited is proper?

I dont think your master's degree is going to reduce your chances. Also I think the interviewer is definitely going to buy your reason . You can also try for NMIMS , they have a special course for pharmaceutical companies.

ATB!!!
@supratimd916 Thanks for your clarification. I was really confused over how I need to justify MBA after M.pharm. What I am trying is to explore sectors other than pharmaceuticals. NMIMS has a pharmaceutical management program and the placements are in big pharma MNCs also. Do you think the prospect of that program is limited to pharmaceutical cos only?

Such specific courses have restricted reach i.e you will be limited to that sector. But look from it from the other point of view if you do MBA in finance then also you will be limited to the finance companies only. Look at your interest and decide a course.
If you have any other problem feel free to ask.

Hi All,

I need an honest suggstion/advice from you all folks.

I am en engieering graduate (B.Tech, PG Diploma), having around 12 years of experience in IT industry. Presently I am in the role of Project Manager of a reputed ITcompany & located in Kolkata.

Due to some personal constraints, I am in urgent need to be located in Kolkata only, unfortuately in my doman, there is not much scope in Kolkata & hence it is becoming extremely difficult to get any project in Kolkata from my domain/technology & thereby there is always a push to move out of Kolkata which I am least interested.

In this situation, do you thnk, doing an MBA will help me, to swich my career to a pure management line & find a job in Kolkata ?

If so, can you suggest me,which stream of MBA will be te best option in that case ? I know, doing a regular MBA will be difficult for me at present, so if required I have to go for a distance MBA from any famous institute like Sikkim MAnipal/ICFAI etc.

Sometime back I thought of doing an MBA in HR Management. Any company will need HR managers & hence it will ensure a job in Kolkata. But I am not sure, wheather just doing an HR MBA will grant me job or not, b'coz, inspite of 12 years of industry experiece, I don't have any HR specific experience.

Otherwise, please let me know, your frank opinion, if any other stream of MBA will help. Primary objective is to get a job with matching remuneraion in Kolkata. I am open to swicth domain, thoug it will be peferrable for me to be in an IT company.

Thanks in advance,

Deb

Hi,

I understand your situation but to be true, even after MBA ( regular one ), very few companies would like to have a resource with MBA + 12 years of work ex, based out of Kolkata.

Coming to the distance MBA, it doesn't bring that much value addition in my opinion that it will help you in switching the domain just on its basis.

You can always go for Executive MBA from IIM-C ( that takes care of your location in Kolkata ) and then check out with few major companies located in Kolkata and visiting C Campus for posting in Kolkata.

Other option which I can see is talk to your HR personnel and see if they can allow you to change your domain or get you into roles like Pre Sales etc. where you can do a good amount of work and remain based out of Kolkata.

And as far as HR Distance MBA is concerned, I will suggest not to go for it as it would not lead you anywhere wrt career !! Had it been regular MBA, it would have still helped you but distance MBA in HR with 12 yrs of work ex in IT is a strict no no IMO.

Hope this helps!

Cheers and All the best!
@visionIIM-ACL Thanks a lot for your prompt reply. Got a better idea now.

I'm no expert so take this advice with a pinch of salt!! No method is a sure short and definite way when it comes to entrepreneurship. Only 7 people of the current batch even in IIMA opted for it. Just think about it for a second, you would normally think that best management education in the country would give you enough knowledge and motivation to go ahead and set up a company but instead the reverse happens. You learn that there are huge practical difficulties in doing so and hence the result is you start looking for safer option of joining a well established business.

Doing business is no science mate especially at the grass root level in India. It's full of uncertainties and I personally know business families who made it only after failing twice or thrice. What does that failing twice signify for a person who made it the third time? Was it lack of motivation? NO! Was it deficiency of knowledge? YES! Deficiency of knowledge about specifics of a business.

So My point is do what you feel is best for you! If you can afford to take risks now, go ahead. If no then look for safer options for now and build a risk taking capacity and then go ahead. Working for an established business for sometime would be that period of gaining knowledge about specifics and also building a risk taking capacity. So decide accordingly.

As far specific institute for construction management is considered. Here it is--->
http://www.nicmar.ac.in/

I am a newbie civil engineer with several civil engineers in the extended family and this is the institute that is most talked about in this space. Also all my professors during my graduation recommended this institute.( Disclaimer: I am in no way linked to the institute.)

Cheers!! Hope this helps.

hiiii every one

I am a mechanical engineer had 2 yrs of experience in mechanical design for aeronautical industry.I Am preparing for CAT . Now ppl had advised me to do MBA in operations or HR .
I want to know from the experienced persons here which field will be best for me??

@SAM44 Your profile has nothing to do with the CHOICE you make to take up the specialization. It all depends on your own interest. If you do not like operations then take HR or whatever you like the best..

As per your profile, operations would obviously be a value add if you want to continue in the same field. You would be able to show RELEVANT experience to the recruiters for your final placements.

However, I would suggest that you should prepare for the exam first and then spend time over such issues.

For your b school interviews point of view, prepare your answer for going into operations domain (even if you do not want to).. this saves you from the additional grilling that the panel may enjoy, seeing your interest towards HR after having worked into core ops domain ...
later when you join, you would have one full year (except for colleges like SP Jain where you have to decide specialization beforehand) to decide which specialization is suited best for you..

Hope it helps.
@mayankleo_1 thanks dude. It was a useful suggestion.......

I need some help.will be very much happy if someone helps me out regarding a decision i have to take.Actually i am an engineering student and about to give cat this year but i have spent all my engineering days sitting in the last benches and scribbling weird stuff in my pocket notebook. What I am trying to say is i have always wanted to be a writer and if possible, a director(well guys do not start thinking of me as a day dreamer, what is wrong with having ambitions).
While having a chat i just asked my mother if she would allow me to do an M.A in English and bang!!!!She refused and was mad at me for thinking of it.Just to make myself feel better i went to my brother and asked him and he said "if you want to do an MA in English, India is not the place to be....no prospects at all...do it abroad".
My brother is just like a guru to me, but i want to stay here itself and guys i really could use some advice pleasssse!!!
Please let me know some good universities or colleges reputed for a good English faculty and also the prospects of doing an M.A English in India.....and what kind of a job can one expect?
Well, Thanks anyways.
if you want to write , do that and MA in English literature is not going to give you a framework on how to write .. I would suggest start by writing articles on topics you have views on and share it with websites which are eagerly looking for good pieces .. see how the public reacts to it , do you feel happy about it .. But on the other hand .. keep a job until you become a publicly acceptd good writer .. when the transition comes go for professional writing

Its not a problem to have ambitions , problems occur when ones wants to achieve them overnight .. Its a tough journey ahead , prepare for it , have back ups
@supratimd916 I had talks with you in this thread earlier. I am writing CAT and SNAP this year. But CAT seems to be a uphill task for this year. Rather SNAP looks quite possible. I'm trying hard for both. My profile looks:
10th: 81.37 % (WBBSE) 2004
12th : 86.5% (WBCHSE)2006
B.Pharm: 84.6% (WBUT)2010
M.Pharm: 86.5% (BIT, Mesra)2012
By 2012 end I'll have 6mths work ex in Cipla, in loan licence coordination dept as a trainee management staff. Do you think with good score in SNAP 2012 and such short work ex I'll be able to get into SIIB/SCMHRD?
Also suggest me whether I should wait for CAT next yr, by when my work ex will grow to about 18 mths.

Hello everybody!
I am Mayank kishore , a fresh graduate from Symbiosis institute of Technology, pune. I am a cat aspirant and I am preparing fr cat 2012. I got a decent 94.4 in cat 2011 with 98 in qa and 73 in va. I hv got decent academics too with 88.8 in Xth and 82.4 in 12th( both CBSE ) and a cgpa of 3.622 out of 4 in grad which corressponds to 90.55%. Now, I got placed in Infosys but, my doj is 20th MAY 2013 so, I decided to utilise this gap to prepare fr cat. I hv joined T.I.M.E test series and I am scoring 95-97 percentile consistently with balanced sectional scores.

Did i make d right decision to focus completely on cat? is d gap gonna hamper my chances of gettin into a top IIM? am i doing gud enough to get a 99.5 in actual cat to compensate fr d gap and 0 wrk ex?

Eagerly waiting fr d earliest reply!

Regards

@mak008 Just keep doing what you're doing. You are well on track. Preparation wise I would say you're doing very well. But then rather than completely sitting idle and just preparing for CAT, try doing something like contributing to an NGO (not monetary!!). Not that you can't justify the gap, but its always better to show that you were able to multitask, and you were not completely idle other than CAT prep.
