RanaG, sb29, thanks 4 ur reply and i understand what u r trying to say. but the question is i believe that i m an average student n to make myself super brilliant i need to work hard. that is y even 5 lakh package is enuf for me. contrary there is a process in jamshedpur where u can abduct the inherit job of your parents who works in Tata steel. so the ultimate idea is to complete Mba n to earn sum experience of 3-4 yrs n then applying for the TATA Steel.
i also wanna disclose that i do have a hobby of finding tricks for hacking in an ethical way. i have completed my Information security and ethical hacking from Appin technology with 71% score third highest in our branch till date and still in a process. and there was an opportunity to get into R&D; of Appin technology knowing that it cud be the ultimate mistake that i m making cuz i wanted to pursue MBA..
I have considered many facts like there can be a boom or recession in any field.. so i opted for two different field which is IT and finance. MBA act as a Finance field and Hacking as an IT field. there cant b a situation where both the field will be goin thru recession.. if so update me cuz i really hv no idea abt it..
dont know y i m getting this vibe where every1 is asking me to drop my idea of doin MBA.[I said ... What will I achieve by doing it from 5 lakh-placement-college ? What will Iachieve by doing it from a good college ? too !!! ] i m not saying you guys are wrong contrary i m really happy about the fact that you guys are trying to help me out, but i m not able to unravel the mystery that u guys are suggesting me to have an alternative,,, [ I meant you burn all the bridges which take you back to an alternative ... ]cuz i have seen students who wanna pursue it from ndim, niilm and many more. but i havent got any such reviews from ur end.. just curious to knw the answer why shouldn't i pursue and you can be blunt cuz i am ready to face my weaknesses but i shud have a proper answer for not pursuing MBA.. dont get me wrong that i m not trusting u guys but just to make it more strong or valid i need some definite answer..
one thing that i wanna say is doing MBA is my goal right now and that is wat i m looking forward but trust me i really dont have any idea abt colleges which is forbidding me to take an admission somehow where i m looking my priorities(stated in previous threads) and considering college facilities and judging it. Aicte approved, ministry of hrd, naac accredited and many more other certificate which i can gather from an institute, 5 and above lakh packages.. fee structure 5-8 lakhs which include internation tour - leapy or ipad and n gud placement.... so can u suggest anythng now... i hope i have answered most of your questions now..
and how can i send you a personal message.. there wasnt any option in ur profile... thanks u sir [I am not a SIR ..... just not yet ... ]for ur reply and looking forward for an update from ur end... Please click on my name -> 'RanaG 'and you'll see the option
buddy all I am trying to say is .. THINK ! think about the 5 lakh placement and think about a 15 lakh + (which only better MBA colleges will give you ..)... what's your choice ... It's nice to know that you're a hacker ... I know at least one hacker now...
im sorry if sound stupid with this question I am currently working. Im the only source of income of my family If suppose i get to join the iim's(off-course impossible),will the iim's provide any stipend. Will they allow the students to work part time or even full time?? pls reply
I'm pretty sure you wont be allowed to work full time. Part time I'm not sure. And I haven't heard of any top institutes giving stipend. So that happening is unlikely. But if you do get into a top B school, you can try and avail of some merit cum means scholarships from the institutes
I somehow knew this in the back of my mind but several factors (discussion forums elsewhere and on pg, several rankings) led me to believe otherwise. The latest Business Standards/IMRB gradings reiterated the standing of XIMB.
But then if it were treated as tier1, wouldn't that reflect in the placements? I mean if companies look at certain institutes to be in the same category, wouldn't they provide the same profiles and packages to them? Talking of profiles, is it true that only students from the very top institutes get 'front-end' roles (whatever that is- I'm a fresher, not much idea ) whereas others get back-end roles.
Please help me out here... :
Averages hide more than they reveal. The placements are good. Yes it is true that different institute grads get different kind of profiles. For example in my organization, we have been recruited as Management Trainees and start as Managers. Some other institute grads get recruited as exec trainess and start as Dep Mgr. Tier 2 grads start as Asst Mgr. Similarly, in ICICI, different tier institutes gets placed in AM1, AM2 and M1 grade. But, once you are in a particular grade, your career options are same as other people in your grade. In my org, an XIMB grad gets the same opportunities and roles as me or an IIMA guy.
However, There are companies which treat XIMB as tier 2. You won't believe but there are companies where even SP, MDI grads are treated a notch below. So it is very relative.
Relativity also comes into play once you are inside a b-school. Suppose tomorrow you get into IIMA, you will treated a notch below an IIT guy and a notch above unknown engg college guy! So you won't be able to sit for some companies (or some companies may not shortlist you).
Hi.. I am in some serious confusion, I am a comp sci engineer and had always thought of doing an MBA( since 12th) i did not take my IT job so that i could do well in cat etc.. now i did not get the college of my choice but have taken admission in a good enough college(Read top 15 according to PG rankings) but after all this and spending two years after it and being at a B school the thoughts in my mind are 1. What is an MBA and how in the world would it help me coz i want to be a businessman. 2.If its just for the exposure that i'll get should i go for a short term industry specific course rather than going on for a full time MBA? 3. Seriously speaking to people who've already completed their MBA....apart from giving you a better job what does it do...
i might sound NAIVE but these questions have been haunting me since past 1 week

I think you have secured admission in a good business school.
1. As a fresher, MBA would help you get a flavour of everything a business needs. You would know how to read a balance sheet, how to sell your products, how to manage your inventory and how to lead your company. I think that would help you when you start your business. 2. Read answer above. 3. This one is difficult. I will speak from my experience. I did my engineering from a little known engineering college (but I was a topper there). I got jobs at Infy and Wipro. I was brilliant in coding and would have done well at either company. But even during my engineering, I was more interested on how what I was learning was relevant to a company. That's why I decided to do an MBA. Money was an attractive feature but that was not the primary aim. Infact, I am leaving an extremely well paying job to start my PhD (a 5 year commitment).
The best thing about MBA was getting to know some of the brightest people in the country. My batch had DRDO and ISRO scientists, national level swimming and shooting champs, millitary engineers and more. Apart from that, the grind that you go through in first year mainly prepares you to face any pressure that life may throw at you. MBA is also a kind of an insurance. I knw that in case I start a business today and fail after 2 years, some company would be ready to hire me.
But the most important thing is an MBA from a good institute changes your attitude towards everything and broadens your perspective (however cliched it may sound). So definitely go ahead and do your MBA. You won't regret it.
hello everyone pls tell about the nirma college ? or i should continue my job ?
If you could share your profile ,then it would have given us a better perspective..
Nirma is a decent b-school , a decent choice for freshers . It depends a lot on what you want to do with your career if you feel you can do better next year , then why not give it another shot ..
Unless you are aiming for top 4 IIMs, it won't make much of a difference. If you are looking for 'tag', then aim for top 6 IIMs, XL, SP and MDI. But most of the job offers that you would get from these instis, you will get from XIMB as well.
One more doubt-as you say, job offers might be similar. But what about growth within the organization and opportunities later on? Would you say someone from the top 4 IIMs/XL/FMS etc will have an easier time making it to the top? Is there any preferential treatment? Knowing what I do about brand-crazy Indians, there is bound to be some disparity in the way these groups are treated as compared to the rest, right? :

once you join an organization, you would be treated at par with everyone who has joined at the same level..
having a brand does have an advantage in the long term.. for eg, at my previous organization, my colleague was given an early promotion since he was from an IIT.. and he was one of the laggards when compared to others at the same level..
moreover, one gets to tap the alumni base from those branded colleges who have already reached the top positions..
having said all this, if you perform well in the organization, then no matter from where you are, your efforts would be recognized..
For the past two years, I've been trying to concentrate on getting into a top 15 B-school but the efforts have not been fruitful.
From what I understand, even if I enter a good B-school, I would be offered an IT profile both during summers as well as final placements.
So at this juncture, I wish to ponder seriously on the kind of career path I would like to choose, with or without an MBA.
From what I've known through various sources, I would like to make a career as a consultant in Strategic Consulting firms (preferably the BIG 4). I know it could take time and I'm ready to slog for it. But I still don't know the exact path which would help me reach this destination.
Also, I like to believe that Strategic Consultants/Analysts basically do problem-solving by advising the client suitably. I would be grateful if you could please throw some light on the precise work profile of a consultant in the Big 4 firms.
From this year onwards, I wish to improve/change my profile in a way which would help me during my interviews during admission, summers as well as final placements. I do not wish to make a career in IT Sector and I'm looking for a change of sector. Some of my friends are working in Mu Sigma Bangalore, some have switched to other firms from Mu Sigma and I'm not really sure whether that profile would help me in my career plans. I would like to work towards making a profile which would see me shortlisted for colleges like ISB and SP Jain and good B-schools abroad, at a later stage perhaps.
I have been selected for both VGSOM@ IIT KGP and DoMS@ IIT M, for their MBA programmes. which one to join?
2010 grad from NIT Durgapur (Mech) and employed in an automobile MNC.
would like to pursue a phd in the future... :)
Both are decent schools. What do you want to do your PhD in?
Going by the profiles of the profs only (and not placement of MBA grads). VGSOM would have good profs in Quantitative finance and economics, operations and OB. IITM would have good profs in finance and operations.
Ensure that your marks are good during your MBA to get a good PhD position.

Agree with Mayank. Once you are recruited into a level, your growth will be based on your performance. In most cases, there won't be any discrimination. Discrimination will only come into play if the person discriminating is an alum of a particular insti. But this would be advantageous to you if that person is from XIMB. :)
However, in some roles, especially when the roles are billable by the hour, like in consulting, there will be high level of discrimination. This is because your company will be able to charge the client more if your profile is top class (read IIT-IIM). This is one reason why top consulting companies visit only the top 3 IIMs and recruit only IIT grads.
One thing you should keep in mind is that you won't be able to brag to that neighborhood uncle that you are doing your MBA from XIMB. A layman would know an IIM (even Ranchi) and won't know an IIFT/SP/MDI/XIMB.

Very nicely explained, thanks. I've made my final decision, and will give CAT another shot (hopefully just one more ). The lure of the IIMs is just too high and I feel I will not do my talents (and my ego? ) justice if I do not give it at least one more shot. It should not remain a regret later on in life. At least I'd have tried!
Just that once in a while, some horrible scenarios pop up in my head where CAT goes all wrong, I score low and lose all enthusiasm

Anyways what's life without some risk!!
Good decision. Don't worry about things going wrong. Give your best shot!
I have one more doubt. Will IIT coaching faculty work ex is considered during lateral placement??If not, then I will try for Core job, which may waste aoher months of m career.
Faculty job in a Coaching center is not considered to be a genuine work-ex by many good companies and many companies really looks down to the work-ex in coaching centers. So, I would suggest you to try for a Core job or any full time job.

See if you have the option of getting a core job, obviously go for it. But while you try, take up the job at the coaching insti. Though the coaching insti may not be considered as relevant work ex during laterals. Or take up the JRF, that will be better. But try for the core job for sure
Regarding the gap, I'd suggest you keep it to less than 3 years. Which means try to get through a good school in 2013, as a gap greater than 3 years tends to become a bit of a burden on you at b school
If anyone can help me, I will appreciate it a lot. I am 24.5 years old. I finished my schooling in 2005 with 10th(cbse)-75% and 12th(cbse)- 68%. Then was forced to drop a year because I didn't get into any good engineering college. After that, I got into a below average college in 2006 studying cse. I couldn't complete the course in time due to health problems in the last year of my degree. I was only able to finish it in Dec 2011 whose result was declared in May 2012. It should have ideally been over in May 2010. My percentage for engineering was 57%. In between the gap after my normal college ended, I had to help in my father's business due to his failing health which is better now. Also, I involved myself in some stocks day trading to keep myself busy. I would like an honest reply as to if I have any chance of getting in a good mba college- top 20 if a good percentile with all the accumulated gap years working against me. Any reply would be appreciated. I am an ambitious guy but I have been lazy in my overall approach to life. I would request if any of you could provide me an answer as to if it is advisable to got for cat 2012. I have already gone to coaching institutes and I to decide if I should join them with a batch starting at the end of this week. Please reply.
I'm presently working with TCS, Mumbai and have taken 4 attempts at CAT so far. My academic profile is as follows :
10th - CBSE 89.8% (2003) 12th - CBSE 77.6% (2005) Grad - B.Tech(Electronics) NIT Surat 6.13 CGPA (2009)
For the past two years, I've been trying to concentrate on getting into a top 15 B-school but the efforts have not been fruitful.
Ok ..
From what I understand, even if I enter a good B-school, I would be offered an IT profile both during summers as well as final placements.
Not necessarily , you can switch your domain to work in core finance or marketing profiles .. opportunities will be less but they will be there ..
From what I've known through various sources, I would like to make a career as a consultant in Strategic Consulting firms (preferably the BIG 4). I know it could take time and I'm ready to slog for it. But I still don't know the exact path which would help me reach this destination.
You can get into Big 4 Accounting firms which also have consulting arms .. but as of now Big4 Consulting firms is difficult , your aim can right now to get into Tier 2 Consulting firms and then target Tier 1.. The Strategic Consulting part will take a lot of quality work across at-least 3-4 domains
Your first target has to be working in functional consulting role and this could be any area of interest for you or IT Consulting can be a way out .. IT consulting is very different from IT Technology Work ..
I do not wish to make a career in IT Sector
To improve your profile , check your interests what you want to do in future , if its finance there are many certifications which cater to various domains , same is the case with operations ..
In consulting work domain knowledge is of prime importance .. From Finance , Marketing , Ops , HR , IT etc to specific sectors such as manufacturing , FMCG, Oil and Gas ..
Both are decent schools. What do you want to do your PhD in?

Thanks 😃 ..... fianlly decided on VGSOM.... would like to go for a phd in fin.
